What Scares You Most About Diabetes?

We’re talking about what scares you most about diabetes on this Divabetic podcast with musical inspiration from the band Old Dominion.

Do diabetes and its diabetes health-related complications scare you?

How does this fear affect your life and daily self-care, and more importantly, what do you do about it?

Small amounts of fear might energize you and get you to pay attention, but the threat has to seem manageable. If there’s nothing you can do, and the future looks too awful, you will tend to give up and try to enjoy the time you have left.

Of course, some fear of diabetes is justified. The complications of diabetes are terrifying. So are the effects it can have on your family and your finances. Fears are stressful, and stress isn’t good for diabetes.

Fear increases insulin resistance and blood pressure and interferes with the body’s natural healing systems. It makes it harder to enjoy life.

So what do we do about it?

By taking better care of ourselves, we can reduce stress and even feel better about our diabetes lives.

Guests include Poet Lorraine Brooks, Best-Selling Author Dr. Lori Shemek PhD, Diabetes What To Know founder Ansley Dalbo, podiatrist Dr. Michele Summers Colon DPM, gynecologist Dr. Andrea Chisholm MD,OB-GYN, Patricia Addie-Gentle RN, CDCES, Jackie Mernit Muhlstock, and Mama Rose Marie.

Throughout the podcast, we feature music from Old Dominion’s Happy Endings album. Most tracks are upbeat, stay close to their debut album’s sound, and deliver a dozen radio-friendly songs. The album debuted at No. 1 on Top Country Albums, selling 31,000 copies and 41,000 equivalent album units when streaming and track sales are included.

Revisit Your ‘Why’ If You’re Lacking Motivation

Our music inspiration, Alicia Keys’ make-up free movement, served as a self-empowerment tool for singer, songwriter, and maybe it can inspire you?

Alicia says,” I don’t want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing.”

Are you tired of hiding in disappointment from your inability to lose weight or keep it off?

“Motivation tends to lose its luster as we go forward (with goals). When you take the time to get in the right mindset. When you start losing your motivation to go to the gym or you start losing motivation for what you are eating then you go back to your ‘why.’ Your ‘why is crucial to your success,” says Dr. Lori L. Shemek, Ph.D., America’s #1 Fat Loss Expert and Author of ‘How to Fight FATflammation!. “When you revisit how you felt when you initially made your goal, that’s the key. When you attach that emotion to why you made that goal, then you’ve got it.”

People give up because they don’t have the confidence to pull it off,” continues Dr. Lori. “If you stop worrying about your behavior and focus more on your self-trust research shows that you will follow through. Be consistent with self-trust.”

Embracing Your Body & Your Diabetes

“I would look in the mirror, and I didn’t feel beautiful,” says singer Elle King about the insecurities she felt as a teen.

The “Ex’s and Oh’s” Grammy Nominated singer felt pressures to measure up to conventional beauty standards. But her mother, model London King, encouraged her to accept herself.

“My mom always raised me to love myself; she always told me I was beautiful,” King adds in the video reports PEOPLE magazine. “You’ll never feel beautiful unless you believe it inside. I had to go on my own journey to find that.”

Elle King’s personal journey to self-acceptance meant focusing on her passion for creativity, from writing songs — to experimenting with body art.

“I don’t sing, walk, talk, act like anyone else. That’s what I think is beautiful: People that stand out. Because if we all looked the same, I think the world would be a really boring place.”

Today, the singer has about 50 tattoos, which are inspired by her adventures in life and love.

Don’t Get Down, Get DIVA!

Research shows that self-esteem can be a key factor influencing health care behaviors.

Let our Diva Inspiration Elle King’s journey inspire you to see the beauty inside of you. Recognize that your body is your own, no matter what shape or size – focus on how strong and healthy you are!

Diva Inspiration Elle King says she doesn’t believe you can love another person or be in love unless you love yourself. We wholeheartedly agree and hope her music  inspires you to love yourself just the way you are!

Guests include Dr. Lori Shemek PhD, We Are Diabetes founder, Asha Brown, Author Ginger Vieria, Patricia Addie-Gentle RN, CDE, Poet Lorraine Brooks, Divabetic Image & Style Advisor Catherine Schuller AICI, CIP and Mama Rose Marie. Hosted by Mr. Divabetic.

Throughout this Diabetes Late Nite podcast we are playing selected cuts from Elle King’s “LOVE STUFF” courtesy of SONY MUSIC.

Note: Elle King is not living with diabetes. However, she has battled substance abuse, depression and PTSD. Today, having made it through the darkness, Elle King shares her story on her album, Shake the Spirit to help inspire others. We hope she can inspire you to ‘GLAM MORE, FEAR LESS.’

Elle King adds, “I’ve changed a lot. I’m finding my own self-love, and I’m inviting love, outwardly in. … You can go through something crazy in your life, and you can come back from it.”

Is Vegetable Oil Worse Than Sugar?

This morning, our friend and colleague, Dr. Lori Shemek, Ph tweeted “Did You Know? Vegetable Oil is Worse Than Sugar”.

I’ve never heard of this claim before, so I decided to google it. My findings are below. I strongly recommend that you do your own research and share your findings with your healthcare providers.

For years vegetable oil was considered a better alternative to saturated fats like butter. However, recent animal research suggests that when it comes to weight gain, soybean, canola, corn, and vegetable are making us fat, sick & harming brain health. These oils are highly processed damaging cellular health. Use olive oil, avocado oil, coconut, butter or ghee.

Up until the 1950s, when butter and coconut oil were first wrongly blamed for the rise in heart disease, we weren’t eating these processed oils reports Eat This, Not That. So we’re just now seeing what years and years of eating the stuff can do.

In  Dr. Catherine Shanahan, MD’s book, Deep Nutrition: Why Your Genes Need Traditional Food, Shanahan explains that vegetable oils are the “brain’s worst enemy” because they increase the risk of brain conditions like Alzheimer’s and dementia. While she didn’t conduct a formal research study to back her claims, recent research by Professor Martin Grootveld of De Montfort University Leicester confirms Shanahan’s inklings.

We’re talking about a ‘New Year, New You‘ attitude about living with diabetes with musical inspiration from Aaliyah on Divabetic’s Diabetes Late Nite podcast.

Although Aaliyah died at the age of 22 and had a short music career due to her early passing, the singer’s music helped to redefine R&B, pop, and even hip-hop. And her legacy continues to live on. Her hard work ethic, creativity, and her sweet demeanor have inspired fans over the past two decades.

Diabetes Late Nite podcast guests include Patricia Addie-Gentle RN, CDE, Pendulum Therapeutics CEO and Co-Founder Colleen Cutcliffe, Ph. D., (the maker of Pendulum Glucose Control), Virginia Valentine, APRN, BC-ADM, CDE, FAADE, Dr. Darren Wayne from MealBetix and Yoga For Diabetes Author Rachel Zinman.

Throughout the podcast we will be featuring music from Aaliyah’s Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number album courtesy of SONY Music.

On Day 23, we’re spotlighting Divabetic’s Diabetes Late Nite ‘The Angry Show’ podcast from August 2016. We’re discussing how common it is to feel angry about a diabetes diagnosis with musical inspiration from Evelyn “Champagne” King.

We all know what anger is, and we’ve all felt it: whether as a fleeting annoyance or as full-fledged rage.

Anger is a completely normal, usually healthy, human emotion.  But  keeping your temper in check can be challenging especially while managing your diabetes.

Diabetes is the perfect breeding ground for anger. Anger can start at diagnosis with the question, “Why me?” You may dwell on how unfair diabetes is: “I’m so angry at this disease! I don’t want to treat it. I don’t want to control it. I hate it!”

One reason diabetes and anger so often go hand in hand is that diabetes can make you feel threatened. Life with diabetes can seem full of dangers – insulin reactions or complications. When you fear these threats, anger often surges to your defense.

While it’s true that out-of-control anger can cause more harm than good, that’s only part of the story. Anger can also help you assert and protect yourself. You can learn to use your anger. You can even put it to work for better diabetes care.

Ready to get your anger under control?  Are you ready to recognize, sit with, and move beyond the triggers that cause destructive anger.

Podcast guests include Author of “Overcoming Destructive Anger” Dr. Bernard Golden PhD, Dr. Lori Shemek PhD, Susan Weiner MS, RD, CDE, CDN, Laura Laria MA, CASAC-T, Jill Knapp- Woolsey, Poet Lorraine Brooks, Mama Rose Marie, and the Charlie’s Angels Outreach.

Throughout the podcast we will be playing selected songs from The Essential Evelyn “Champagne” KIng courtesy of SONY Music.

On Day 21, we’re spotlighting Divabetic’s 50 Shades Of Gray: Diabetes & Aging podcast from December 2015.

Aging is inevitable — even botox can’t turn back the clock permanently. However, you do have a choice over how you’ll spend your twilight years. Managing diabetes in the golden years presents a variety of challenges, ranging from increased insulin resistance and weight gain to sexual health issues and depression.

As we age our bodies gradually become less adept at using glucose from the bloodstream — a condition known as glucose intolerance, according to Diabetes Self-Management. This may be due to having too much body fat, which interferes with the muscles’ ability to use insulin. As glucose intolerance decreases, insulin resistance increases with age.

Fortunately there are better tools for managing diabetes and preventing diabetes health-related complications today. Older people with diabetes have the opportunity to live longer than ever before.

Guests include Dr. Andrea Chisholm MD, FACOG, OB-GYN, “How To Fight FATflammation!”,  Author  Lori Shemek PhD, “The Secrets to Living and Loving With Diabetes” and “Sex and Diabetes” Janis Roszler, MS, RD, LD/N, CDE, FAND  2008-2009 Diabetes Educator of the Year (AADE), Humorist and Author “The Sweet Blessing: My Adventures in Diabetes” Trisha Porretti RN, BSN, CDE.

Throughout the podcast we will be playing selected songs from Mariah Carey’s “Merry Christmas’ album courtesy of SONY Music.

Obesity Rises As Diabetes Rates Drop – What’s Going On?

CNBC reports the number of new diabetes cases among U.S. adults keeps falling, even as obesity rates climb, and health officials aren’t sure why.

“The bottom line is we don’t know for sure what’s driving these trends,” said the lead author of the new report, Dr. Stephen Benoit of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

One reason explaining the drop off could be that the diagnostic threshold for diabetes was lowered in the late 1990s.

“We might have mined out a lot of the previously unrecognized cases” and so new diagnoses in the last several years are more likely to be actual new illnesses, said Dr. John Buse, a University of North Carolina diabetes expert.

Additionally the hemoglobin A1C blood test used to diagnose diabetes is much easier to use than previous tests that required patients to fast for 12 hours or to undergo repeated blood draws.

New federal data released Tuesday found the number of new diabetes diagnoses fell to about 1.3 million in 2017, down from 1.7 million in 2009.

Mr. Divabetic takes a ’50 Shades of Gray’ approach to talking about diabetes and aging during this lively hour of diabetes education and empowerment.

As you age, you may be most aware of your new gray hairs and wrinkles, but aging causes changes throughout the entire body.

It used to be said that having diabetes aged people an additional 20 years. Today, thanks to better tools for managing diabetes and preventing and treating its complications, people with diabetes have the opportunity to live longer than ever before.

However, managing diabetes in the golden years presents a variety of challenges, ranging from increased insulin resistance and weight gain to sexual health issues and depression.

Guests include Dr. Andrea Chisholm MD, FACOG, OB-GYN, “How To Fight FATflammation!”,  Author  Lori Shemek PhD, The Secrets to Living and Loving With Diabetes” and “Sex and Diabetes: For Him and For Her” Janis Roszler, MS, RD, LD/N, CDE, FAND  2008-2009 Diabetes Educator of the Year (AADE), Humorist and Author “The Sweet Blessing: MyAdventures in Diabetes” Trisha Porretti RN, BSN, CDE.

Eating Less Meat Doesn’t Make You Less Manly

Although a vegetarian or vegan diet won’t “cure” type 1 or type 2 diabetes — despite some erroneous claims — scientists have found that a meatless diet can do quite a bit of good for people with diabetes. A study in Diabetes Care showed that people with type 2 diabetes on a vegan diet lowered their cholesterol and improved their kidney function. And eating more vegetables and carbohydrates that are low on the glycemic index can help make it easier to manage your blood sugars.

If you’re considering a vegetarian diet, please consult with your doctor. Additionally,  it may be helpful to speak with a registered dietitian (RD) who can help you create an eating plan that provides all the necessary nutrients and the right number of calories to maintain a healthy weight.

Diabetes & Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI’s)

Sexually transmitted disease (STD) cases reached a record high in the United States in 2015, federal according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Any infection in the body, including sexually transmissible infections (STIs), can potentially increase blood glucose levels (BGLs) in people with diabetes. STIs are infections or bugs caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites that are passed from one person to another during sexual contact.

Health professionals generally don’t consider STI’s as the cause of rising high blood glucose levels. Don’t be embarrassed to talk to your doctor or diabetes educator if you think you might have an STI. Important points to note:

STIs can infect many areas of the body and not just the genitals.

STIs don’t always cause signs and symptoms.

STIs don’t always cause symptoms but may still cause an increase in BGLs.

Not all genital signs and symptoms are caused by STIs.

Chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis are curable with antibiotics, and widespread access to screening and treatment would reduce their spread, the CDC said.

Most STD cases go undiagnosed and untreated, putting people at risk for severe and potentially permanent health effects such as chronic pain, infertility and increased risk for HIV.

“The health outcomes of syphilis — miscarriage, stillbirth, blindness or stroke — can be devastating,” said Dr. Gail Bolan, director of CDC’s Division of STD Prevention.

“The resurgence of congenital syphilis and the increasing impact of syphilis among gay and bisexual men makes it clear that many Americans are not getting the preventive services they need. Every pregnant woman should be tested for syphilis, and sexually active gay and bisexual men should be tested for syphilis at least once a year,” Bolan said.

Is There A Difference Between (Sexually Transmitted Disease(STDs) and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)?

A Sexually Transmitted Disease (“STD”) is the most commonly used term for the collection of medical infections that are transmitted through sexual contact. But that’s just the thing. People who become infected, don’t always experience anysymptoms or have their infection develop into a disease.

Mr. Divabetic discusses ‘Diabetes & Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI’s)’ with guests Dr. Andrea Chisholm OBGYN and Patricia Addie-Gentle RN, CDE on June’s Diabetes Late Nite scheduled for Tuesday, June 12, 2018, 6 PM, EST.

Our Tenth Day of Blue Christmas Gift Ideas from Dr. Lori Shemek

On the tenth day of Blue Christmas my true friend, Dr. Lori Shemek PhD, CNC sent to me a pair of diabetic socks to make my feet happy.

Divabetic is celebrating a Blue Christmas to bring attention to the mental health issues related to living with diabetes.

You probably know better than we do how diabetes affects your holiday experience. You might feel the weight of diabetes more at this time, because you can’t let go and celebrate like everyone else. Or maybe you do let go and then beat yourself up over it.

That’s why we asked our panel of experts, friends and past Diabetes Late Nite podcast guests to spread some holiday cheer by sharing their favorite products to help keep you ‘happy and healthy’ all year long.

Dr. Lori Shemek’s pick: Creswell Diabetic Socks.  These socks easily stretch over ankles and bounce back into shape. loose fitting tops stretch over ankle for ease of dressing. The sock tops bounce back for a comfort fit without binding the leg. Allows for better blood circulation, so important for people with diabetes as well as those living with circulatory problems or neuropathy.

“Foot care is essential, protecting the feet and these socks help a multitude of foot issues,” says Dr. Lori Shemek, who holds a Doctorate in Psychology; she is a Certified Nutritional Consultant and a Certified Life Coach.

“With diabetes, due to lost sensation and reduced circulation, a simple blister can quickly worsen and give rise to serious infection. By assessing a patient’s specific risks and providing basic foot care, we are trying to prevent significant complications,” says Kevin Fraser, Certified Pedorthist at the Sunnybrook Centre for Independent Living in Toronto as reported by Globe Connect

“Areas of concern might be a developing callous, or an area where the skin has hardened or become red because of pressure or rubbing from their shoes or seams in their socks,” adds Kevin Fraser.

“Peripheral neuropathy” is the medical term for the nerve damage that affects people with diabetes, making them less likely to feel a cut or blister on their feet. They are also more prone to poor blood circulation to the legs and feet, so their foot injuries do not heal as quickly.

These conditions mean that foot wounds in these patients can lead to ulcers and infection, and, in the most serious cases, to amputation.

What is a Certified Pedorthist?

Pedorthics is the science and practice of evaluating, fabricating and delivery of footwear and foot orthoses to prevent or improve painful or disabling conditions of the foot and ankle caused by disease, congenital defect, overuse or injury.

Dr.Lori Shemek PhD also recommends adding an appointment with a Registered Dietitian to your Christmas gift list.

“So many people with diabetes really are trying to navigate their way in living with diabetes,” says Dr. Lori Shemek. “An appointment with a Registered Dietitian is a great gift idea!“

A Registered Dietitian nutritionist is a food and nutrition expert who has met academic and professional requirements. Over half of RDNs hold advanced degrees. Some RDNs also hold additional certifications in specialized areas of practice, such as pediatric or renal nutrition, nutrition support and diabetes education.’

Dr. Lori Shemek is well known as a pioneer in creating global awareness of low-level inflammation and how it is responsible for and the core cause of most illness, disease, faster aging and weight gain.. She has been sending out the message about inflammation long before it was a buzz word.

Dr. Lori Shemek has uncovered the pathway to the core cause of weight: inflamed fat cells that not only promote unwanted excess weight gain and belly fat, but poor health as well.

Lori Shemek is a Nutrition and Weight Loss expert, a best-selling author and specializes in weight loss resistance. She has helped many people to once and for all.. lose the weight and feel better fast. She is a leading authority on inflammation and its role in weight loss, preventing disease and optimizing health.

On December’s Diabetes Late Nite podcast we’re celebrating a Blue Christmas. I chose this theme in December because ‘Blue’ is the color that I most closely associate with diabetes and I feel that the mental health issues related to diabetes are often overlooked and ignored. Some listeners may feel that talking about depression is depressing  which is understandable. However, I feel it is far more important to reach out to those coping with diabetes distress and burnout  and let them know they are not alone.  Please join

Are you feeling ‘blue’ this holiday season?

If so, you’re not alone. While it’s true that sadness and/or depression at holiday time can be a reaction to the stresses and demands of the season, people with diabetes are more likely to be depressed than others states David Spero BSN, RN for Diabetes Self-Management.

Diabetes can cause complications and health problems that may worsen symptoms of depression. Depression can lead to poor lifestyle decisions, such as unhealthy eating, less exercise, smoking and weight gain — all of which are risk factors for diabetes.

The good news is that diabetes and depression can be treated together. And effectively managing one can have a positive effect on the other.

If you think you might be depressed, seek help right away. Your doctor or diabetes educator can refer you to a mental health professional.
