Divabetic® (divabetic.org) is a national nonprofit diabetes outreach organization committed to changing attitudes in people at risk, affected by and living with diabetes. We strive to encourage prevention, early action and above all, education.

Luther Vandross

Divabetic® was inspired by the late R & B legend, Luther Vandross, and created and founded by his long-time assistant, Max Szadek. Divabetic®, a combination of the word ‘diabetic’ with the letter ‘V’ inserted for Vandross, evokes feelings of power and the positive attitude associated with the great DIVAS Luther loved like Patti LaBelle.

Join us for Divabetic’s 9th Year Anniversary Diabetes Late Nite Podcasting Celebration with musical inspiration from P!nk.

P!nk’s new album, Hurts 2B Human features the singer teaming up with Chris Stapleton, Khalid and more on her passionately confessional eighth LP.

Pink sings “I abhor reality” on the sugary dance song “Can We Pretend” featuring Cash Cash. But when she digs into what’s getting her down, it’s the most brazen and heartbroken she’s ever sounded. On the Sia-cowritten “Courage,” Pink’s voice swings up the scale on its own chandelier. “I don’t have to do this perfectly,” she sings. “Happy” (co-written by Teddy Geiger and Sasha Sloan) reminds us she is also the patron saint of the Missundaztood: “Can somebody find me a pill to make me unafraid of me/ Maybe I’m just scared to be happy,” she sings.

Guests include Beyond Type 2’s T’ara Smith, Catherine Lawrence , Dr. Sara (Mandy) Reece PHARMD, CDE, BC-ADM, BCACP, FAADE, Poet Lorraine Brooks, Glamazon Beauty owner Kim Baker, and the Charlie’s Angels of Outreach. Hosted by the happiest health care “MC,” Max “Mr. Divabetic” Szadek.

I know that coping with diabetes on a daily basis can not only be stressful but it can also be more time consuming especially in the morning. Sometimes you need a little ‘pick me up’ to get you through the day.

Self-pampering is a great way to reward yourself for being proactive about managing your diabetes and there’s no better way to treat yourself than by giving yourself a safe manicure!

I want to help you ‘Makeover Your Diabetes’ by sharing the best products in beauty/fashion, diabetes self-care and exercise to help you “GLAM MORE, FEAR LESS” with less stress this year!

For people with diabetes, it is vitally important that they learn to care for their nails. Your nails protect your fingers and toes from injury and trauma.

When caring for the nails, take note if they look unusually pale or white. Pale looking nails could indicate anemia according to Health Status.

In some people with diabetes, the nails take on a yellowish hue. Often this coloring has to do with the breakdown of sugar and its effect on the collagen in nails. This kind of yellowing isn’t harmful. It doesn’t need to be treated.

But in certain cases, yellowing can be a sign of a nail infection. People with diabetes are more likely than those without diabetes to get a fungal infection called onychomycosis. This infection usually affects the toenails. The nails will turn yellow and become brittle.

By caring for the feet and nails carefully people with diabetes  can often find problems early before such drastic measures must be taken.

Smith & Cult

One of Divabetic’s picks for the best Nail Polish for Diabetes is Smith & Cult. A classic red polish, free of eight hard-to-pronounce chemicals, poured into a chic gold-capped glass bottle that can double as bedside table decor! – what more can you ask for?!!! The red is a favorite, but all the shades prove ultra-high performance, meaning they’ll keep your speedy at-home manicure glossy and vibrant for more than two days.

We’re talking about ‘Diabetes & Pride’ on June’s Diabetes Late Nite podcast with musical inspiration from Ricky Martin.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Stonewall Uprising (June 29, 1969). It is widely considered to be the single most important event leading to the gay liberation movement.

Since Ricky Martin came out in 2010, he’s been a prominent voice for LGBT rights both in the U.S. and in his native Puerto Rico. Ricky Martin said, “I just wanna be free,” upon receiving GLAAD’s Vito Russo Award, which honors gay entertainers who promote equal rights. Martin opened up his life to Vanity Fair in its April 2012 issue and spoke candidly about his twins, Matteo and Valentino, and his longtime partner, Carlos Gonzalez.

As an openly gay man, Mr. Divabetic is honored to shine the spotlight on members from the LGBTQ+ community living with diabetes. Guests include Stephen Bernstein, Greg Rubin, Maria Salazar, Catherine Schuller and the Charlie’s Angels of Outreach.

Diabetes Late Nite is a fast-paced, full-filled hour of diabetes education and wellness advice that encourages listeners to “laugh a little, learn a  lot.”

On the BEAUTY BEAT with Catherine Schuller, Image and Style Director

As Image and Style Advisor of Divabetic, discovering products and services that contribute to stoking our ‘Divatude’, allows me to curate, commune and search high and low for wonderful new items that I want to share with my fellow divas.  I attend a LOT of events and expos, sampling and testing out new products such as skin care, safe shapewear, cushioned socks, makeup/haircare and dietary and food innovations.  I am, by my own definition, the epitome of a ‘Diva on the Go’.  I also have pre-diabetes, and find that I must pay attention to ALL aspects of my regimen and discover new and different things that make me feel like dressing, dining, dancing, dreaming, do-ing it up like a diva.  So not only do my wardrobe items and OOTD (Outfit of the Day) reflect my mood to live my best life each day (or at least LOOK like I’m trying to!), but what I nourish myself with is something that I love to strategize so that I don’t just grab the first thing and dash out the door!!

I’m constantly hitting the markets, streets, stores, expos, trade exhibits in search of new and innovative products to bring into Divabetic.  I attended the Makeup Show last weekend, which is produced by our very first makeup sponsor, The Powder Group and Michael DeVellis.  His show has grown since we first met, and it is truly an insider industry gem where all the newest and best products are revealed for those in the beauty business.

Last weekend, I was a guest of supermodel/influencer Khrystyana, from Season 23 of ANTM, and she introduced me to her client Pacifica Beauty.  I am in search of products not only for Divabetic, but for my Sustainable fashion event at National Graphic’s Encounter venue, happening during NYFW in the Fall of 2019.  I loved Pacifica’s 100% vegan approach and cruelty free ethos.  Their beauty products are pure and effective, with over thirty products that are as clever as they are useful and planet friendly!  The even feature a recycling program called Preserve for the customers to recycle empty packaging easily and efficiently.  Send your empty package back to them for recycling…do this ten times and you get a free product.  It’s that kind of conscious effort that is beginning to open everyone up to the need for eco friendly, sustainable, waste free living.

Slay All Day

So, wouldn’t it make sense for them to launch a product that is a nutritional supplement, water enhancer, smoothie booster, good for you from the inside/out called ‘Slay All Day‘?  I love the title and even hear a little Cardi B. bird call on Okayyyy? when I looked at the ingredients, I realized it was totally in line with our “be a better eater” philosophy.  And a wonderful way to use the powder in water that you need to be drinking all day long to stay hydrated.  Drinkable beauty.  Says it right on the jar!

In a little plastic jar (but we are recycling those through Perserve) is contained amazing ingredients that out taste and out perform any water enhancer product we’ve promoted in the past.  It’s 100% vegan, gluten free, zero added sugar, ten calories per scoop, 2 grams of carbs.  With pineapple, green tea, ashwagandha, and hyaluronic acid, this makes for a delicious addition to water or even enhance a smoothie with a few scoops of this delightful blend.  It’s as delicious as it is good for you…no more harmful and toxic ingredients just to keep ourselves hydrated.  I am in love with all of the products, I may have another entry about the makeup and skin care.  They have such interesting natural ingredients that you can use knowing they are gentle for your face, and even gentler on the environment.

Get a Free Mini Supply of Pacifica Beauty!

I didn’t get a discount code to have you order on line (they can’t undersell Target), but they gave me a fun mini supply, so the first five divas who respond to this blog through my email directly at catschuller11@gmail.com will get a large sample trial jar.  You will LOVE IT.  Leave me your address where to ship it with your request.  Type in the comments or email re line I LOVE DIVABETIC… I’ll want you to literally tell me how you use your water enhancer and how Pacifica Beauty will be your new go to beauty powder.   Being a diva is from the inside out!…You can Facebook me pm DM too on Divabetic page and simply say “I LOVE DIVABETIC….”  That’s it, first five… free Slay All Day ….This is our first phase and really want to talk new products!!  Once you get the product, just snap a photo of yourself with it and send it to me at catschuller11@gmail.com.

Divabetic’s ‘Wrapped In Red’ Holiday Gift Guide with Sue Perez

Kelly Clarkson‘s fabulous holiday album, Wrapped In Red, is the inspiration behind this year’s annual Divabetic Gift Guide. We asked our contributors to share their favorite ‘red’ gift suggestions for people living with diabetes on the Divabetic blog and Diabetes Late Nite podcast.

What do you feel when you see the color red? For us, we feel excited because it means the holidays are coming! Red is the color of the biggest, most romantic holidays of the season; Christmas and Valentine’s Day. And no one wears red as splendidly as Grace Kelly does in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1954 American crime mystery film, Dial M for Murder.

Grace Kelly was an icon in American culture. Her timeless essence as an actress, her youthful beauty as a mother and wife and her elegant style as a princess continue to captivate us today.

Our friend, Sue Perez, CEO –Beautyphonics Inc. shares  her favorite red lipsticks and makeup looks inspired by Grace Kelly to help you ‘GLAM MORE, FEAR LESS’ this holiday season!

E.l.f. Cosmetics makes great makeup at affordable prices. When I want to achieve a long lasting, gorgeous matte finish I reach for their Liquid Matte Lipstick ($5.00- Walmart). Red Vixen is my go to shade when I want that perfect sexy pout. Coordinate with a full coverage foundation, a pair of natural looking strip eyelashes with a hint of black gel liner turned up in the outer corners for a cat eye effect. Strong and classic.

Mac Cosmetics has always been known for having a diverse color range and their lip formulas of color plus texture always stands out on the runway. A favorite of mine is Ruby Woo it’s a retro Matte formula and looks impeccable with a full coverage finish. Wear this opaque matte lip with bronze sun-kissed tinted moisturizer, shimmery eyelids and extra mascara for an evening look. Stunning and unforgettable.

Chanel makeup is more expensive but worth considering for a splurge if you adore that gorgeous black and gold Chanel package as much as I do. And a translucent powder compact for touch ups is a wonderful treat for your makeup bag. Rouge Coco Glossimer in chili ($30.00- Bloomingdales) provides a flattering and very glossy sheer red when I prefer a lighter lip with a bold dramatic eye makeup look. Keep the rest of your skin matte with only a hint of blush. Captivating and hypnotic.

“These red lipstick suggestions look great on all skin tones!,” says Emmy Award nominated makeup artist and skincare expert,  Sue Perez. “Just experiment and complete the look with foundation, lashes and well-groomed eyebrows. It’s all about balance when I apply makeup, so make sure your look is clean, well-blended and of course, pretty.”

In Sue Perez’s book “Underneath the Makeup” she has makeup applications anyone can do using just a few products and makeup brushes in 15 minutes! Her fabulous book is for ALL women that truly want to understand and define their own unique beauty. You will learn the secrets that are easy and fun to understand so you can do your own makeup effortlessly.

‘DIVA’ FUN FACTS  Dial M for Murder (1954) was Grace Kelly’s first Hitchcock film. ‘She lights up the screen in every scene she’s in, in head-to-toe red, from lipstick to the lace dress (in the most pure ’50s style) and the satin pumps,” says ‘Style on Film’ classiq.me .

Grace Kelly’s costumes were designed by Moss Mabry. Grace Kelly and Alfred Hitchcock made two more films, Rear Window (1954) and To Catch a Thief (1955) before Miss Kelly became Princess Grace of Monaco and retired from the screen in 1956.

Diva Beauty Tips with Beautyphonics CEO & “Beneath The Makeup” Author, Sue Perez

We’re revving up our ‘DIVA’ quotient and making diabetes education dazzle on November’s Diabetes Late Nite podcast with special guest, Beautyphonics CEO and “Beneath The Makeup” Author, Sue Perez on World Diabetes Day, Wednesday, November 14, 2018, 6 -7 PM, EST.

Ready to turn up  your inner ‘DIVA’? Check out Emmy Award Nominated TV Makeup Artist, Sue Perez‘s expert tips and tricks for the most common makeup problems exclusively for Divabetic:

Q: Why does my foundation look orange?

Sue Perez: Because it’s either not the right shade, your using too much or you are setting it with a pressed powder or bronzer. Makeup will naturally oxidize during the day. Only a sheer translucent powder needs to be used for everyday wear after your base makeup.

Q: Why doesn’t my makeup last?

Sue Perez: If you don’t hydrate your skin it could be drier. Our skin will absorb what you put on top of it to prevent moisture loss. Being a professional makeup artist I always use under makeup primers that will protect your foundation from vanishing during the day. The same is true of eye makeup. Using a eye shadow base will increase the longevity of your eye makeup

Q: Why does my eyeliner smudge?

Sue Perez: All pencil liners tend to move, as they are oil based. Try using a waterproof pencil or apply eye shadow over your liners to set them. Liner used in the water line will move more as we blink our eyes so decide if you need to use liner in that area of the eye. I outline a great easy makeup application in my book that all women can do for a daytime makeup.

Q: Why do some of shades of lipstick make my teeth look yellow?

Sue Perez: Try using cooler colors that have a blue undertone like pinks and reds. It will contrast with the color of your teeth and bring out the white. The same is true of your eyes. Using navy, royal blue or cobalt blue eyeliners, mascara and eye shadow will brighten the whites of our eyes.

Q: How often should I clean my makeup brushes?

Sue Perez: Once per month. Don’t soak your makeup brushes! This can make the hair fall out more from the ferule base of the brush. Just use a little hair shampoo diluted in water, rinse and squeeze out the excess water. Lay brushes flat on a dry surface or towel and let them air dry.

Q: Why do I have to wash off my makeup?

Sue Perez: When I was working as an esthetician I got to see a lot of women with clogged pores and blackheads. I could tell which clients didn’t wash off their make up. Makeup and dirt left on the skin along with any makeup will get absorbed through your pores. Another reason why you should not workout wearing cosmetics either. I talk about this in my book and make recommendations.

Q: The official color of World Diabetes Day is blue. But blue eye shadow seems so 1960’s. What’s a diva to do? How do you recommend adding blue to your makeup?

Sue Perez: Blue is better on any eye color except blue! Brown eyed babes wear dark navy or royal blue of you like intensity. Gorgeous green eyes look best using violet, mauve, and lavender, which is blue based and will contrast the green /hazel and make their eyes appear greener. And for my blue-eyed gals they should use pinks, rose,  grey and charcoal smoky shades to contrast that often-fantastic sky blue eye color. ( Note: no one is born with black eyes, they “appear” black. )

Q: For a lot of women with diabetes tending to their self-care cuts into their time to put on their makeup. What tips can you offer to look fabulous without a lot of time?

Sue Perez: Working as a fast television makeup artist I have created short cuts to a quick makeup application. Being Emmy Nominated for my work inspired me to write about my experiences and share my knowledge with the world. In my book “Underneath the Makeup” I have a makeup application anyone can do using just a few products and makeup brushes in 15 minutes! My Book is for ALL women that truly want to understand and define their own unique beauty. You will learn the secrets that are easy and fun to understand so you can do your own makeup effortlessly.

We’re celebrating World Diabetes Day with musical inspiration from Aretha Franklin on Diabetes Late Nite scheduled for Wednesday, November 14, 2018, 6 -7:30 PM, EST.

There are many reasons that Aretha Franklin is the legend of legends, a groundbreaking singer with the fortitude to transcend race and genre, using that tremulous voice as the bulldozer to break down every barrier set up in her way.

Aretha’s own health journey is sparking a discussion about the uncertain connection between pancreatic cancer and diabetes. Long-standing diabetes can be considered a risk factor for pancreatic cancer. It causes a modest increase in risk of 1.5- to two-fold. Some of the other risk factors for pancreatic cancer include smoking, chronic pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), family history of pancreatic cancer, obesity and certain genetic syndromes.

Guests include Poet Lorraine Brooks, Dr. Wendy Satin Rapaport, Diabetes Strong’s owner Christel Oerum, Beautyphonics CEO and “Beneath The Makeup”Author Suzanne Perez, Mama Rose Marie and the Charlie’s Angels of Outreach.

Throughout the podcast we will be playing music from Aretha Franklin’s Aretha Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics’ courtesy of SONY Music.

Diabetes Late Nite is a fast-paced, full-filled hour of diabetes education and wellness advice that encourages listeners to “laugh a little, learn a  lot.”

Sunlight, Diabetes & Your Eyes: What’s A Diva to Do?

Taking care of your diabetes health doesn’t have to cramp your style! The stunning Gucci Cruise 2019 collection proves that you can still make a fashion statement while taking care of your diabetes health!

The sun releases UV radiation which can damage our skin and eyes, particularly when the sun is strong. When the sun is out, all of us should take certain precautions to limit over exposure to the sun.

Diabetes can also raise the risk of diabetic retinopathy and so those of us with diabetes should protect our eyes from the sun to avoid any additional damage to the retina occurring.

Diabetic retinopathy is caused by damage to the blood vessels in the tissue at the back of the eye (retina). Poorly controlled blood sugar is a risk factor. Early symptoms include floaters, blurriness, dark areas of vision, and difficulty perceiving colors. Blindness can occur.

Mr. Divabetic talks about Diabetic Macular Edema (DME) on this episode of Diabetes Late Nite with Diabetic Macular Edema patient Maryanne Kass and Artist Bryce Chisholm.

Protect yourself from UV rays and your eyes will thank you! Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light increases your risk of developing cataracts.  To reduce your exposure, wear a wide brimmed hat when spending time outdoors and always keep sunglasses with UVA/UVB protection close at hand.

When picking suitable sunglasses, the National Health Services (NHS) advises picking sunglasses with a ‘CE mark’, marked as UV 400 or that provide 100% UV protection.

Yellow Squash, also called yellow zucchini or summer squash, is a hot weather vegetable picked in its immature stage to ensure a thin, edible skin and sweet, soft flesh. This squash typically ranges in size from 6 to 8 inches long, although it can be smaller, depending on when you pick the fruit. You can eat yellow squash raw, as well as stir-fried, baked, grilled or sauteed, and you can substitute it for any green summer squash since the taste is similar. One cup of raw, sliced yellow squash contains 18 calories. This low-calorie vegetable is an ideal side dish if you wish to lose weight  according to Live Strong.

“The egg is one of those nutrient-dense foods that generates a lot of debate about its healthfulness, “ says Best-Selling Author  Jill Weisenberger RD, CDE . “Because eggs are high in cholesterol, which has historically been linked to heart disease, the public has long been warned about eating too many eggs, especially the cholesterol-rich yolk. People with diabetes may have even greater concerns because their risk of developing heart disease is quite high.” READ MORE

Patricia Addie-Gentle RN, CDE compared prediabetes to a yellow light in a traffic signal. The basic concept that a yellow light signal means proceed with caution while driving is also applicable to your diabetes health. You can either choose to either stop, slow down and/or speed up a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. It’s up to you.

Eating healthy foods, incorporating physical activity in your daily routine and maintaining a healthy weight can help bring your blood sugar level back to normal. Yet if these people don’t take steps to control their blood sugar now, a diagnosis of diabetes within the next few years is highly likely. 84.1 Million people are considered to have pre diabetes according to the Center of Disease Control. The trouble is, many of them don’t know it. Prediabetes often has no symptoms at all.. It’s a diagnosis made when your blood glucose is higher than it should be, but not high enough to be called diabetes. “Prediabetes is this kind of grey zone,” says Dr. Stewart Harris, a professor in family medicine at the University of Western Ontario’s Schulich School of Medicine who specializes in diabetes. “Your body is metabolically losing the ability to manage blood sugars after eating, and they start to creep up.”
