Luther Vandross Wardrobe Department

These three incredible women changed my life. Jennifer Jacobs, Pam Lewis, and Valerie Rice Prainito met at FIDM in Los Angeles. One by one, starting with Jennifer, they began working in the wardrobe department on tour for Luther Vandross. Lurther hired Pam after Jennifer for a tour, and then Val. All three of these women have gone on to have stellar careers.

Val and I were friends before we worked for Luther. She got the job first, then contacted me to fill a last-minute spot on Luther’s “Never Let Me Go” tour in 1993.

I took a leave from the American Conservatory Theater to go on tour. After that, I returned to San Francisco and waited for a year for another phone call. Shortly after, my life began to change quickly. I moved from San Francisco to New York City to become Luther’s full-time personal assistant.

Like so many others, Luther Vandross changed my life. “He was a benchmark of excellence, and having his name on your resume carried significant weight.”

Director Dawn Porter is a highly respected storyteller, but in her interview with the Hollywood Reporter, she fails to justify Luther’s legacy. His unique talent for showcasing the complexities of love and life’s struggles through his music is still appreciated by his fans even two decades after his passing. It is crucial that this documentary does not sensationalize his life and instead focuses on the various facets of his talent, including his songwriting, voice, and music. As someone who had the honor of working for him, I hope this documentary accurately portrays his legacy.

I have produced several Luther Vandross Tribute podcasts featuring Luther’s friends, family, band members, vocalists, and fans.

Divabetic Prize Winner from Holiday Baking Party

Meet another one of Divabetic’s Holiday Party on Zoom prize winners, Seveda. Seveda won a bracelet from Catherine Schuller’s beautiful Power Piece Heroic Adornment from her line of Upcycled Comicbook Jewelry.

Catherine’s passion for sustainability is evident in creating power bracelets and trinkets using original comic book scraps and resin. To meet the growing demand, she collaborates with local artists and interns.

Power Pieces honors Catherine”s late husband, Mark Gruenwald’s legacy. Mark was an American comic book writer, editor, and occasional penciler known for his long association with Marvel Comics. Mark wrote, drew, and edited many books featuring characters like Quasar, Spider-Woman, the Avengers, Hawkeye, Iron Man, and Captain America, which he wrote for ten years! He was also instrumental in creating “The Official Handbook to the Marvel Universe,” which is the ultimate guide to Marvel’s characters, including their story history, first appearances, and lists of their powers. Without Mark, these handbooks wouldn’t exist because no one knew more about Marvel’s characters and their history than Mark. Mark eventually became Marvel’s Executive Editor in 1987 and held that position until his untimely death from a heart attack in 1996.

Mark’s legacy continues to live on through his work, the characters he created, and now, through this comic book creation challenge. Mark proved that big dreams can come true even if you’re from a small place.

Catherine’s plans include designing power pieces for the cowboy community in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and inviting visiting artist Steven Carrero to contribute to her collection.

Divabetic 2023

This year, one of Divabetic’s many accomplisments was publishing Sweet Romance: A Woman’s Guide to Love and Intimacy with Diabetes by Dr. Janis Roszler PhD, LMFT, RDN, LD/N, CDCES, FAND, and Donna Rice, MBA, BSN, RN, CDCES, FADCES. This ebook is the first in a series to help you enjoy a happy, healthy intimate life with diabetes.

Many people don’t know that diabetes can impact physical and emotional intimacy. And intimacy-related issues can be especially difficult to discuss with a partner or a health care provider. These comprehensive, interactive guides cover everything you need to know to enjoy a fulfilling sexual and emotional life despite the challenges of diabetes.

Get drenched in a hefty dose of R&B and Soul with Crystal Penny as this musical duo has come back again with another gem of a musical creation, ‘Standards’. Standards. I wrote the lyrics fo the breezy tunes celebrating our favorite female vocalists from the Quiet Storm radio format.

In October, we presented Divabetic’s World Menopause Day Panel discussion. Our panel was moderated by Divabetic Image & Style Advisor Catherine Schuller and featured Dr. Julianne Arena, Donna Rice, and Amparo.

Dr Julianne Arena is a double board-certified physician, a board-certified OBGYN who applies traditional, integrative methods and a multi-layered approach to helping women with sexual health and intimacy issues. She’s also a practitioner of Cliovana, the only treatment available that improves long-term clitoral stimulation with proven sound wave technology. Her goal is to help women create optimal and vibrant lives.

I worked with my hands for Halloween, making sculptures with paper mache to display on one of New York’s most iconic Halloween streets. The process taught me that working with your hands promotes mindfulness and provides a sense of personal accomplishment.

An evening of delightful online baking featuring delicious treats without the guilt of sugar was presented at our Holiday Baking Party. The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic, hosted this free Holiday Sugarfree Baking Party on Zoom with Stacey Harris, The Diabetic Pastry Chef, Divabetic Image & Style Advisor Catherine Schuller, and GUIDE Beauty’s founder, Terri Bryant. At the end of the program, we raffled off a Divabetic Gift Package featuring gifts courtesy of Best-Selling Author Tonya Kappes’s Camper Cozy Mystery and Peak 10 Skin‘s Save My Sole Foot Rescue Cream.

In December, we presented Divabetic’s 10th Annual Mystery podcast, Murder Plain As Vanilla, which is now streaming on Spotify, iTunes, and BlogTalkRadio.

In this excerpt, we discuss the dangers of Insulin rationing. Insulin rationing is when someone with diabetes is forced to cut back on their use of insulin due to the medication’s high costs as a short-term measure. Sadly, new studies report that 1.3 million Americans are rationing insulin. Insulin is “like oxygen” for people with type 1 diabetes. Those with type 1 diabetes who go without it can get very sick within hours or days and end up in the hospital with ketoacidosis, a potentially life-threatening complication. It can even be deadly. Those with type 2 diabetes who don’t have adequate insulin can have high blood sugar levels, putting them at risk for complications such as heart disease, blindness, and kidney failure.

Our mystery podcast isn’t only for mystery lovers. It’s a fun way to learn about diabetes and self-care. In between colorful characters, crazy adventures, and mysterious surroundings, we pack health and wellness tips that can help you take charge of your diabetes. We also encourage you to think like a detective the next time you experience unexpected blood sugar fluctuations. Search for clues, collect data, talk to witnesses, and bring your ideas to the authorities (healthcare collaborators) for solutions. A team approach to managing your diabetes isn’t a bad idea either.

This scene spotlights the misleading information provided on food labels. Specifically, we discuss the difference between ‘natural’ and ‘organic.’ Recent surveys indicate that consumers are willing to pay more for “natural” and “organic” labeled products with vaguely defined words.

The FDA has considered the term ‘natural’ to mean that nothing artificial or synthetic (including all color additives regardless of source) has been included in, or has been added to, a food that would not normally be expected to be in that food. However, the FDA does not consider whether the term ‘natural’ should describe any nutritional or other health benefit.

Sadly, natural products aren’t the only labels to go virtually unregulated. Terms like “lightly sweetened,” “made with real…,” and “multigrain” are also more a branding strategy than a substantive label, forcing shoppers to stay vigilant if they’re buying healthy foods.
