Overweight Dogs by Debby Kay

It is a well-documented fact that more people living in the USA are overweight than any other country. This also seems to be true for American dogs as well. Research has shown that being overweight not only causes dogs to suffer more frequently from joint disease and related problems but it also reduces their life span by up to 30%. Yet people for whatever reason continue to feed their dogs too much food.

In my 40+ years of dealing with people who overfeed their dogs I have noticed that most of them do not even recognize that their dogs are overweight. So how do you tell if you have a fat dog. The easiest way is to compare it a chart that Purina research has put out that shows what the differences in weights on dogs looks like. Even with this great chart many people still cannot tell fat from muscle. Muscle is lean and when a dog is in proper weight you can see the cuts in the muscle very distinctly. Fat will make a hard rounded appearance and a very obese dog will have sides that roll back and forth like Jello™ when they are trotting towards you. The ribs of the dog should be easy to feel with lean muscle over them just enough to cover but not hide them.

If you have determined however, that your dog is overweight here are a few tips to help you get those pounds off.

1. Cut the amount you are feeding in half for one week. If let’s say, you are giving 2 cups of dry food in the morning and the same in the evening, then cut back to 1 cup for each meal.

2. Snacks should be meat or raw veggies like carrots and nothing else.

3. Double the exercise and make sure this is aerobic exercise. For example, if you take the dog on a walk to park once a day, keep that but add in another session where you jog instead of walk. Or if your dog likes to swim, add in a session of 30 minutes of vigorous swimming.

4. If you don’t jog you can put your dog on a treadmill for 30-60 minutes a day. I have one just for dogs with a longer base but, if you do things slowly, your dog will adapt to a human treadmill no problem.

Once you get the weight off keep it off by regularly weighing your dog at the vets. They don’t charge for it and it will give you a good guide that those pounds are not creeping back on when you thought you have gotten them all off.

You might want to switch foods as the one you are feeding may have too many carbohydrates or grains in it. A good grain free, balanced food like Rachael Ray’s Nutrish Grain Free diets might just the ticket to keeping those pounds off.

DIVABETIC BOOK SHELF:Walking with Peety: The Dog Who Saved My Life’ by Eric O’Grey

Eric O’Grey was 150 pounds overweight, depressed, and sick. After a lifetime of failed diet attempts, and the onset of type 2 diabetes due to his weight, Eric went to a new doctor, who surprisingly prescribed a shelter dog. And that’s when Eric met Peety: an overweight, middle-aged, and forgotten dog who, like Eric, had seen better days. The two adopted each other and began an incredible journey together, forming a bond of unconditional love that forever changed their lives. Over the next year, just by going on walks, playing together, and eating plant-based foods, Eric lost 150 pounds, and Peety lost 25. As a result, Eric got off all oral medication, and became happy and healthy for the first time in his life-eventually reconnecting with and marrying his high school sweetheart. ‘Walking With Peety’ is for anyone who is ready to make a change in his or her life, and for everyone who knows the joy, love, and hope that dogs can bring. This is more than a tale of mutual rescue. This is an epic story of friendship and strength. ORDER NOW

Stress of a Diabetic Diva by Eugenia Wells-Bassillio

As many of you may know I am a ‘PWD Type 1’ (person living with type 1 diabetes), I have been living type 1 diabetes since 2014. I have been a diabetic since 2005. Being a diabetic is hard since you must be on top of your disease at all times.  You don’t get a day off. I always have to check my blood sugars and carry my diabetes kit with me at all times to make sure that I’m prepared for anything. For example, I carry test strips, meter, alcohol swabs, lancet device, lancets, insulin – fast acting. Insulin – long acting ( in case I don’t get back home in time for my afternoon dose or since I’m at work before my morning dose), pen needles, glucose for lows, snacks, ice pack for summer time  in my purse before I head out the door.

Managing my diabetes also means dealing stress. Stress is probably the hardest thing for me to manage! There’s always something to stress out about in daily life.  I mean how do you go through life stress free? Daily struggles are always there from family and kids to jobs and loads of bills that must be paid. The list goes on and on. I get stressed just thinking about ‘stress’, LOL.

On June 16, 2017, I was informed by my employer that my job of 8 years had been eliminated; this meant that I would lose my benefits on June 30th. This rocked my world! What was I going to do? I needed my meds, supplies and lifesaving insulin. Over the next few weeks my husband and I sat down and tried to decide what to do. We had no choice except to put me on his health insurance. This meant that we’d lose a good chuck of his check since he works for a small company. But what else could we do? Talk about stress! My blood sugars during those weeks and the following months have been out of control. Some mornings I’ve woken up with sugars over 250 and I’ve had to take more insulin to correct. This is, of course,  all due to stress.

People just don’t realize what a diabetic goes through. The highs/lows and everything in between are very tough on the body, spirit and family unit. I have tried to remain positive but it is very hard. I have been to two job interviews. I hope that one of them will pay off. In the meantime, I wake up every day and tell myself that I am priceless. That any employer will be glad to get me.  When I leave the house I make sure to fix my hair and put on my makeup. I grab a different color of lipstick and tell myself that today I will be in control.

I guess I said all of this to just let someone out there struggling with depression, stress, uncontrolled sugars or whatever you are going through, YOU ARE NOT ALONE! We all face different things and that diabetes is hard. But remember this, God only gives his toughest battles to his strongest warriors! And believe me if you are diabetic, you are a warrior! Whatever seen or unseen battle you are fighting you are not alone.

Pick yourself up, straighten your crown, and stomp that runway called life.

Health Headlines: Santa Fe, N.M. residents are considering a new tax on sugary sodas and other sweetened beverages to boost access to pre-kindergarten

The 2 cents-per-ounce tax would apply not only to traditional sugary sodas but also sweetened sport drinks such as Gatorade, many caffeinated energy drinks, sweetened teas, lemonade and some coffee drinks that contain sweetened syrups.

Santa Fe Mayor Javier Gonzales, a key proponent of the tax, says that the proposal includes an incentive for the beverage industry to come up with healthier products by exempting lightly sweetened beverages. That exemption applies to drinks with 10 grams of sugar or less per eight fluid ounces.

San Francisco, Oakland and Albany, California, Boulder, Colorado, Chicago, Illinois, and Philadelphia, PA stunned the industry by approving ballot measures in favor of soda taxes.

With that public momentum, a soda tax may be coming to a city near you. READ MORE

In 1914, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson proposed a special revenue tax on soft drinks, beer and patent medicine after the outbreak of World War I caused a decline in imports and a corresponding decline in credit created by import tariffs. This proposed taxation measure was not however linked to the anticipated health outcomes of reduced sugar sweetened beverage consumption.

Author Tonya Kappes’ New ‘Scene of the Grind’ Mystery

I’m thrilled to announce that USA TODAY bestselling author, Tonya Kappes will be joining us again for this year’s Diabetes Mystery, “Gypsies, Tramps & Peas” which debuts in September.

I encourage you to check out Tonya’s just released a fabulous new mystery, ‘Scene of the Grind’ from her new ‘A Killer Coffee Mystery’ Series. It’s a fun read filled with quirky characters, colorful scenery and a funny storyline,  just like our upcoming Diabetes Mystery podcast!

“Gypsies, Tramps & Peas” takes place at the colorful 35th Annual Mermaid Parade in Coney Island, New York. My character, Mr. Divabetic finds himself involved in another murder investigation when his former high school swim coach mysteriously disappears. On the way to cracking the case, while stumbling upon clues his team of amateur sleuths reveal helpful Summertime diabetes self-care management tips.

My chance meeting with Tonya at BookCon in New York City four years ago inspired me to write and produce our first annual Diabetes Mystery podcast. Four years later, thanks to her bubbly personality, never-ending encouragement and enthusiasm throughout the writing process, we’re still going strong. I will always be incredibly indebted to Tonya for believing in me both personally and professionally. Somehow she ‘magically’ manages to squeeze time into her busy writing and book tour schedule to hold my hand through countless script rewrites.

I don’t think I could have ever risen to this challenge without her help!

Our annual diabetes murder mystery podcast has brought me so much personal joy that it’s my absolute pleasure to promote Tonya’s latest book, “Scene of the Grind” from her new ‘A Killer Coffee Mystery’ Series.

The series takes place in the cozy southern fictional tourist town of Honey Springs, Kentucky.

Roxanne Bloom (her friends, though few call her Roxie) quit her job as a lawyer, divorced her cheating husband, and moved to the quaint town of Honey Springs, Kentucky where she’d spent many of her teenage summers visiting her eccentric and fun-loving Aunt Maxi.

Roxy follows her dream and opens The Bean Hive, Honey Springs first coffee house on the town’s newly revitalized boardwalk. that opens just in time for Honey Springs annual Honey Festival.

Roxy’s life couldn’t be better. Business was booming, she’s reconnected with special people from her past, including her first teenage love, and visits The Crooked Cat book store, which is still her favorite shop in Honey Springs.

One problem, Aunt Maxi and Alexis Roarke, owner of Crooked Cat, aren’t on the best of terms. Alexis leases the book store’s building from Aunt Maxi and the rent is going up.

Roxy takes Alexis a fresh cup of coffee from The Bean Hive and a tasty pastry as a peace offering between the two women, but discovers the beloved book store owner murdered and Aunt Maxi is the number one suspect.

Gossip in Honey Springs is as hot at the coffee served at the Bean Hive and Roxy has to uncover who is behind the murder not only to save her shop, her aunt, but her life.

Midnight Chocolate Flourless Cake by the Diabetic Pastry Chef

A lot of us experience late night cravings for salty, sugary and starchy foods that can cause havoc with our diabetes self-management.

What and how much you eat can directly affect your blood sugars both overnight and the next morning, especially if your snack choices are mostly carbohydrate foods. Your diabetes medicine may not completely “cover” excessive eating at night and you may be unpleasantly surprised the next morning when you check your blood sugar and find that it’s higher than desired.

March’s Diabetes Late Nite podcast guest, The Diabetic Pastry Chef, Stacey Harris who is living with type 2 diabetes wants to help you to have your cake and eat it, too, without sacrificing  your diabetes self-care.

Stacey has created recipes for making breads, cakes and other desserts diabetic-friendly by swapping out the sugar, blending the flour and cutting the milk carbohydrates. Here’s one of the Diabetic Pastry Chef’s most requested recipes:

Ingredients:

  • 8 ounces sugar-free or bittersweet chocolate, coarsely chopped
  • 1/2 cup butter, cut into pieces and softened
  • 2 whole eggs
  • 4 separated eggs
  • 1 cup sugar or equivalent dry sugar substitute
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:

Melt chocolate in double boiler or bowl set over hot water. Remove from heat and whisk in butter until it melts; set aside.

In a bowl, whisk whole eggs and 4 egg yolks with 1/2 cup sugar or equivalent dry sugar substitute, and the vanilla, just until blended. Whisk in warm chocolate mixture.

In a separate bowl with an electric mixer, beat egg whites until foamy. Slowly add remaining sugar or equivalent dry sugar substitute. Beat until whites form soft peaks and hold their shape but are not quite stiff. Stir approximately 1/4 of beaten whites into chocolate mixture to lighten it. Gently fold in remaining whites.

Pour batter into an 8-inch springform pan that has been lined on the bottom with a round of wax paper. Smooth top of batter and place pan in a preheated 350-degree oven. Bake until top of cake is puffed and cracked and center is firm, approximately 35 to 40 minutes. Do not overbake.

Cook cake on a wire rack. Center of cake will fall as it cools. At serving time, fill center with sweetened whipped cream or sugar free chocolate sauce and dust top lightly with sifted cocoa. Run tip of a knife around edges of cake, and carefully remove sides of pan.

Yields 8 to 12 servings.

Suspect Boulevard with Tonya Kappes

tonya.002

USA Today bestselling author, Tonya Kappes returns for another madcap diabetes mystery podcast, “Suspect Boulevard” scheduled for Tuesday, September 13, 2016, 6-7 PM, EST.

“I never knew meeting Max Szadek in NYC while at Book Expo of America, it would turn into an acting gig,” says Tonya.

Three years ago, I introduced myself to Tonya at the Book Expo. At the time I was networking to meet Romance Writers to participate on our ongoing series of ‘Don’t Let Diabetes Kill Romance’ podcasts to raise awareness for sexual dysfunction in the diabetes community. When Tonya told me that she was a mystery author I was initially stumped on how we might be able to work together. A few days later, I had an idea to create a mystery theater podcast. Since I’m not a mystery writer or even a writer I called Tonya and asked her if she would coach me throughout the writing process.

“My father is diabetic so it was a no brainer to help spread the word about diabetes and how to GLAM MORE, FEAR LESS!!,” says Tonya.

Two years later and I’m still shocked and delighted that she said ‘yes’. Not only did Tonya help me with my mystery script she also agreed to play herself on our first diabetes mystery podcast she has also readily agreed to return again (for last year’s diabetes mystery podcast, “The Phantom of the Okra”)and again ( for this year’s diabetes mystery podcast,“Suspect Boulevard”).

I am forever grateful to Tonya for making the time to help me educate people about diabetes and diabetes self-care in a new and interesting way. I appreciate the way she guided and mentored me throughout the writing process. Her enthusiasm and kindness gave me the courage to step out of my comfort zone and try something new; mystery writing.

Is The Weekenders Offensive to Diabetics?

26114516Although you’ll rarely find a character living with diabetes in the movies, there are plenty of them in books. Unfortunately these literary depictions of diabetes usually follow the same tragic demise you’ll find in the play and film, ‘Steel Magnolias.

I just learned about another awful depiction of diabetes in NY Best-Selling author, Mary Kay Andrews‘ latest novel, ‘The Weekenders’ when I pieced up the free paper, Pink in Charleston, SC.

Is this true or false? I’m currently reading the book and I haven’t read anything that I feel is offensive related to diabetes in this book.

For those of you who have not read The Weekender yet, the story features a 12 year old girl, Maggy is living with type 1 diabetes. She was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes before learning that her father was murdered and that her family is bankrupt. I think this scenario would be pretty stressful for anyone even if they weren’t living with diabetes. I think it’s reasonable to assume that she would be dealing with a lot of unexpected high’s and low’s as she struggles with her emotions.

However my feelings don’t seem to echo those of other readers from the diabetes community based on on reviews posted on Amazon.com. Here are a few comments from Amazon reviews:

“The daughter was an undisciplined brat, I had a mouthy 12 year old who suffered from low blood sugars …”

“The behavior of the 12yr old daughter was outrageous and intolerable, the fact that she was never truly disciplined in any way for her attitude was galling …”

The book actually centers on Maggy’s mother’s life, Riley. Riley who has a summer home on Belle Isle, unexpectedly loses her husband (who was murdered). Of course, she has more than just the murder of her husband to worry about (!) This is because her husband has left her and her daughter, Maggie, high and dry without a penny in the world. Her beautiful house has a foreclosure sign on it, her money is all tapped out at the bank, and she has no husband to get the answers from. What is supposed to be a summer of fun turns into a downright nightmare for Riley and her family as the begin to uncover the hidden secrets that her late husband was hiding from them all. And to crack the case, they all need to keep open minds and hearts.

Have you read the book? If so, we’d love to hear from you! Please e-mail your comments to mrdivabetic@gmail.com

Plus, I’d love to invite the author, Mary Kay Andrews on our monthly podcast to talk about the depiction of type 1 diabetes featured in her book.

Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld

ELI.001

A lot of people struggle with intimacy issues besides people with diabetes. However, sexual problems (sexual dysfunction) are common among people with diabetes, particularly in older men who have had diabetes for years. In addition, many medical experts believe that women with diabetes experience sexual difficulties as a result of complications from the disease.

I’m trying to do my part to lessen the stigma surrounding sexual dysfunction and diabetes by sharing great fictional romance books and expert advice on diabetes with the Divabetic community.

If nothing else my latest read, ‘Eligible’ by Curtis Sittenfeld, which is so captivating, could help relieve some the stress associated with managing blood sugars.

I became interested in this book, ‘Eligible’ this Spring after reading countless glowing reviews about it in the British press while I was in London. It was heralded as being the ‘Book of the Summer.’ I quickly learned this book is par of a series comprised of different authors doing their own take on Jane Austin’s novels. Curtis Sittenfeld’s “Eligible’ is a new take on Austin’s ‘Pride and Prejudice,’ The British writers Alexander McCall Smith, Joanna Trollope and Val McDermid have already published their versions of “Emma,” “Sense and Sensibility” and “Northanger Abbey” respectfully.

One Goodreads’ reviewer said, “I’ve only read two of the four (in the series) and this one is a much better read.”

As soon as I returned home I ran to my branch of the NY Public Library to look for it. No dice. I ended up on the reserve list at #256 (I kid you not). Even the librarian rolled her eyes when she announced my place on the list. Well, three months later and several cheesy paperback mysteries in between my number finally came up! I stopped what I was doing, ran down and grabbed it on Friday rather than risk missing my window of opportunity and then being doomed to another three months of purgatory on the reserve list. The two books I’m currently reading (‘Where’d You Go, Bernadette’ and ‘The Readaholics and the Falcon Fiasco’) were dashed to the side so that I could read this book in my allotted time for reserve book.

This version of the Bennet family—and Mr. Darcy—is one that you have and haven’t met before: Liz is a magazine writer in her late thirties who, like her yoga instructor older sister, Jane, lives in New York City. When their father has a health scare, they return to their childhood home in Cincinnati to help—and discover that the sprawling Tudor they grew up in is crumbling and the family is in disarray.

Youngest sisters Kitty and Lydia are too busy with their CrossFit workouts and Paleo diets to get jobs. Mary, the middle sister, is earning her third online master’s degree and barely leaves her room, except for those mysterious Tuesday-night outings she won’t discuss. And Mrs. Bennet has one thing on her mind: how to marry off her daughters, especially as Jane’s fortieth birthday fast approaches.

Enter Chip Bingley, a handsome new-in-town doctor who recently appeared on the juggernaut reality TV dating show Eligible. At a Fourth of July barbecue, Chip takes an immediate interest in Jane, but Chip’s friend neurosurgeon Fitzwilliam Darcy reveals himself to Liz to be much less charming. . . .

And yet, first impressions can be deceiving.

Taking the story out of England and bringing it to America has allowed the author to touch on such current topics as the cost of health care, artificial insemination, transgender and interracial relationships, and the unreality of reality television. The characters in ‘Eligible’ an be raucous and the situations ungenteel, but not since “Clueless,” which transported “Emma” to Beverly Hills, has Austen been so delightedly interpreted according to the NY Times’ review.

Yup, I read the entire book in one day. It was well worth the wait. I fell in love with the Curtis Sittenfeld’s use of language. The book is filled with quotes like,”Time seemed, as it always does in adulthood after a particular stretch has concluded, no matter how ponderous or unpleasant the stretch was to endure, to have passed quickly indeed.”

And as the NY Times review said, “it’s a pleasure to find out how Sittenfeld has updated classic Austen scenes to fit this new milieu. In “Pride and Prejudice,” Elizabeth responds to the disparaging remarks made by Mr. Darcy by repeating them “with great spirit among her friends.” In “Eligible,” Liz confronts Darcy on the spot. “I’ve heard we grade on a curve here,” she says, referring to his criticisms of the women of Cincinnati in relation to the women of San Francisco, “so I’m probably what — more like a B for the coasts? Or a B-minus? If you have a minute to figure it out, be sure to let me know.”

Parts 1 and 3 were my favorites Part 2 felt like layover at an airport. I just wanted to hurry through it and get to my final destination, you know what I mean? That said, overall I really enjoyed this book and recommend it. It’s smart and funny. I loved the author’s modern day comparisons, character attributes and locations. Grab a copy!

People who experience sexual difficulties can lead more enjoyable, fulfilling sexual lives by learning about common causes and symptoms of sexual difficulties, treatment options, and how to talk it over with a doctor or mate.

Out-of-control blood sugar levels can lead to blood vessel and nerve damage that hamper sexual performance and enjoyment. This can cause diabetes-related sexual dysfunction in men as well as in women. Men and women with diabetes also should be aware of sexual function issues that affect both sexes.

Other factors can cause or exacerbate sexual dysfunction, including psychological issues, self-consciousness and fear of failure. If you are experiencing impotence or sexual dysfunction, it’s important to see your doctor for an accurate diagnosis of your condition.
