Memorial Day weekend is here already!?? ✨Where has the time gone? I’d love to say we’re going to a BBQ with friends but well, you know. ?? Plenty if time for that when this is over! ?…Ever wonder how many calories there are in alcohol?? . . . ➡️Liquor/spirits like gin, vodka, & whiskey have 100 calories per 1.5 oz shot without any added mixers! Alcohol itself has 7 calories per gram, so the higher the alcohol content, the greater the calories. Mixed drinks like margaritas (my personal favorite!?) tend to have lots of added sugar – average of 200 calories per drink. Opt for a skinny and skip the extra agave or sour mix (and skip the salt to prevent bloating the next day!). Beer can have anywhere from 100 to 350 calories! Wine is somewhere around 120 calories per 5oz. . . . ✅These White Claw spiked seltzers are a great lower calorie option! (Not an ad, just like them & great for this example). They have 100 calories & 2g carb per 12oz can. It’s important to recognize that drinking alcohol, especially on an empty stomach, can actually lower your blood sugars even if you’re drinking something with sugar added. This is why drinking alcohol can give you the munchies and cause you to overeat! . . . ??If you have diabetes, try to have alcohol with your meal and watch your blood sugars closely for several hours after consuming to be sure you don’t have a low. If you have more than one drink, I recommend eating a snack with carbs before bed to help prevent an overnight low, especially if your blood sugars are close to normal or headed south at bedtime. Depends on the person & so many other factors. . . ✅Tip: drink a full glass of water for every alcoholic beverage you have to prevent dehydration. Hangovers are not fun over the age of 30! ? . . I’m not recommending you drink alcohol, but if you do, the recommendation is no more than 1 per day for women & 2 per day for men. Are you interested in learning more about how alcohol effects your body? ????
