Small changes can help manage diabetes, but where do you start? Many zero-sugar, less-sugar, and reduced-sugar foods have a strange aftertaste or leave you unsatisfied and wanting to eat more. The more these products proliferate in grocery store aisles, the more hopeless our search becomes. We’d love to hear what works or doesn’t for achieving your diabetes health goals. Let’s help each other out with some valuable insights!

Mr. Divabetic talks to nationally-recognized Registered Dietitian and Diabetes Care and Education Specialist Jill Weisenberger MS, RDN, CDCES, CHWC, FAND about The Beginner’s Guide To What To Eat With Type 2 Diabetes digital download.

With a few simple swaps, you can help live your best life while managing your diabetes. Our experts offer straightforward, simple, and fun swap ideas for drinks, medications, self-care, and fashion. Plus, we share style tips and words of inspiration to help you maintain a healthy habit.

Developing these habits isn’t always easy. Adapting to a new routine can be tricky, and it’s often tempting to want to return to old ways if we don’t see immediate results. One of the biggest mistakes people make when forming a new habit is taking on too much too quickly.  Focus on what’s working in your diabetes self-care plan before overhauling diabetes management. Instead of decluttering the entire house, why not focus on one room or closet? Why not focus on the calories you drink rather than everything you eat?  If you want to eat healthier, try replacing one dessert daily with a piece of fruit rather than cutting out sugar completely. If you’re going to get into hiking, start with a walk at lunchtime. Setting small goals you can achieve will help keep you motivated along the way.

Product Review: Swoon Lemonade

On a hot Summer day, I picked up a can of Swoon Pink Lemonade at my neighborhood Bodega. I had never heard of Swoon before, but the bright colors and the big Zero Sugar caught my eye.
I googled the product and found out that Swoon co-founder Jen was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at a young age. She was on the hunt for delicious, zero-sugar drinks with little success. Cristina and her co-founder created a
sweet, fruity, tart, and deliciously flavored drink.

The only thing to note is that it does have a slight stevia aftertaste that tingles on your tongue. Apart from Pink Lemonade, Swoon offers exciting flavors like Lemonade, Ginger Lemonade, Half and Half, Peach Tea, Lemon Tea, Raspberry Tea, and Peach Tea.

What’s even cooler is that when you buy a case of Swoon online, they donate one can to a needy family through the nonprofit Wellfare and their first-of-its-kind Better Box program that’s improving access to convenient nutrition in low-income communities.

Frozen Watermelon Pink Lemonade Recipe

Many people consume more sugar than they realize. Our bodies don’t need sugar to function properly. The American Heart Association recommends limiting added sugars to no more than 6% of calories each day. For most American women, that’s no more than 100 calories per day, or about 6 teaspoons of sugar. For men, it’s no more than 150 calories per day, or about 9 teaspoons.

We’re talking about ‘THE SWEETEST TABOO’ aka ‘ADDED SUGAR’ with musical inspiration from Sade on this episode of Divabetic’s podcast. Podcast guests include Patricia Addie-Gentle RN, CDCES, Tameka Milline, Catherine Schuller AICI, CIP. Kathy Dolgin aka ‘High Voltage’, and Stephanie MacKendree. Throughout the podcast, we play music from ‘The Essential Sade’ album courtesy of SONY Music.

Product Review: Macalat Sweet Dark Chocolate

We’re taste-testing Macalat sweet dark chocolate made of organic heirloom Peruvian cacao erythritol, pink salt, monkfruit, vanilla bean, cinnamon, and sunflower lecithin. But it’s the mushroom extract that creates the smooth, sweet finish.

Chocolate and mushrooms might not seem like an obvious pairing at first. But these two superfoods combined can delight your taste buds.

The chocolate bars are a nice size. After two bites, it has a rich taste and velvety smooth consistency compared to other brands of sugar-free chocolate bars that tend to be more chalky textured.

The makers discovered a way to balance and sweeten fine 70% heirloom cacao without sugar or sacrificing taste and smoothness.

Two pieces of chocolate contain 3 grams of sugar alcohol, but because of the fiber content, Macalat has zero net carbs for those Keto followers who care about this. Macalat is the first sweet dark chocolate that is organic and sugar-free.  No hidden ingredients, just healthy organic superfoods. This chocolate is very satisfying! Macalat is vegan, keto, paleo, soy-free, gluten-free, and dairy-free.

A box of 12 chocolate bars costs $58.68, but they’re currently offering a 15% Discount on their website. Click on LINK to learn more about Macalot Sweet Dark Chocolate.

The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic stops by the Mermaid Parade in Coney Island to raise awareness for diabetes in a fun, new way.

The Mermaid Parade, founded in 1983, officially opens the ocean for summer swimming, teaches mythology to Brooklyn families, and provides self-esteem for Coney Island and artistic self-expression for the New York City arts community.

Over the years, the Mermaid Parade has grown into the largest event of the year at Coney Island, and it is also one of the ten biggest parades annually in New York City.

This year’s version featured dancers, bands, square politicians, people costumed as pirates, octopuses, and sailors, and many women wearing fake fishtails on their bottoms and nothing but sequined pasties — or less — on top!

New Product Review: Starbucks’ New Zero Creamers

Starbucks’ New Zero Creamers contain 20 fewer calories and 6 grams less sugar per serving than Starbucks’ existing options.

The American Heart Association recommends capping daily sugar intake at 24 grams (6 teaspoons of sugar). If you consume two tablespoons of the regular creamer, you’re already reaching half of your recommended limit.

The new Starbucks’ creamers come in caramel and hazelnut flavors, inspired by their popular in-store drinks caramel macchiato and hazelnut latte, respectively.

The ingredients listed on the Zero Creamer bottles are nonfat milk, heavy cream, vegetable oil, buttermilk, salt, sucralose, gellan gum, and natural flavor. The regular liquid coffee creamer contains nearly the same ingredients with sugar instead of sucralose and slightly less salt.

Sucralose is an artificial sweetener and sugar substitute made from a chemical process that tweaks sugar to form a calorie-free sweetener 600 times sweeter than sugar. According to WebMD, sucralose is marketed as Splenda. The difference between Splenda and other sweeteners, like aspartame (Equal) and saccharin (Sweet’N Low), is that it’s actually made from real sugar. This gives it a taste that is generally more preferable compared to other artificial sweeteners.
