Almond, Wild Blueberry, and Flax Smoothie Recipe

Ingredients
1 1/2 cups fresh or frozen wild blueberries
1 1/2 cups organic, unsweetened almond milk
2 tablespoons almond flour
3 tablespoons ground flax meal
1 tablespoon packed fresh mint leaves
2 teaspoons freshly squeezed lime juice
2 teaspoons raw honey
1 cup ice

Directions
1. In a blender, combine all ingredients and purée until smooth.
2. Divide smoothie between three glasses and enjoy immediately.

There’s no one-size-fits-all diabetes diet per se, but understanding how to make smart food choices is essential for keeping blood sugars in a healthy range.

One good choice is to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, which are heavy in nutrition but light in calories. You can pack a lot of nutrition into one smoothie and get a delicious treat. As long as you stick with healthy ingredients and don’t add extra sweeteners, you can enjoy these treats on a regular basis.

Just remember when you do blend fruit into your smoothies to count them as part of your daily fruit allowance so you don’t overdo it on carbohydrates. Even natural sugar can drive up your blood sugar if you eat too much of it according to Everyday Health.

If you’re struggling to cope with the stress, and anxiety of daily diabetes self-care: try repeating positive affirmations to yourself each morning to steer your mood in the right direction. This way of thinking can be helpful when the mental and emotional burden of coping with daily diabetes self-care gets tough. We also encourage you to seek out a therapist to help you adjust to life with diabetes.

Stress hormones can raise your blood sugar. When you can take care of stress, you can lower your blood sugar.

Shallow, upper chest breathing is part of the typical stress response.

Taking a deep breath really does calm you down by triggering neurons in your brain which tell the body it is time to relax according to a new study. Abdominal breathing encourages the body to relax, bringing about a range of health benefits.

What is the 4 7 8 breathing technique?

Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound. Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a mental count of 4. Hold your breath for a count of 7. Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound to a count of 8.

Do you expect too much from yourself? It’s OK to say “no” to things that you don’t really want or need to do.

There are health professionals who can listen and help you find solutions. Ask your doctor for recommendations if you’d like to see a psychologist or counselor.

Many people wonder how their hba1c number relates to their blood sugar levels. After all, daily diabetes self-care management can be a jumble of numbers: weight, blood sugar levels, carbohydrate counts, fat grams, serving sizes, etc. Hopefully, this handy chart will provide some clarification.

Divabetic Berry & Avocado Smoothie Recipe

I’ve been craving smoothies ever since Special Guest: Jill Weisenberger MS, RDN, CDCES, CHWC, FAND shared her Very Berry Smoothie recipe on Divabetic’s At Home Scavenger Hunt & Smoothie Party on Zoom last week.

Everyone might think that all smoothies are ‘healthy’ but that’s just a bit of wishful drinking. In reality, many of the most readily available smoothies in America also contain loads of calories, added sugars and carbohydrates. 

Some fruits naturally contain more carbohydrates than others, so the type of fruit you choose put in your smoothie is important. Raspberries (15 g carbs), blackberries (14 g carbs) and avocados (12 g carbs) are low in carbohydrates compared to bananas (27 g carbs) and mangos (50 g carbs).

A typical commercially prepared 16-ounce strawberry smoothie made with fruit and 2 percent milk can contain a total of 60 grams of carbohydrates, including 41 grams from sugar according to SFGATE.

Ingredients

1/2 cup of blackberries

1/2 cup of raspberries

1/2 avocado (sliced)

1/2 cup of Almond Milk

1 teaspoon of Monk fruit Sweetener

1 tablespoon of Yogurt (nonfat)

Instructions

Place all ingredients in a blender. Process until smooth (about a minute). Served chilled.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup plain nonfat strained yogurt (Greek or Icelandic)
  • 1 cup frozen mixed berries or frozen mixed berries with cherries
  • 1 tablespoon sweetener of choice
  • 2 tablespoons nonfat milk or any tart juice (cranberry, pomegranate, cherry)

Instructions

  1. Place all ingredients in a blender or a container for an immersion blender. Process until smooth.

Q: Will fruit smoothies spike blood sugars?

Jill Weisenberger (JW): Anything with carbohydrates has the potential to spike blood sugar levels for people with diabetes, Certainly fruit, especially blenderized fruit, can do that. So the key is what else is in your smoothie.

Q: Jill, are smoothies in general as healthy as most people seem to believe? 

JW: Smoothies can be an excellent way to get health-boosting, disease-fighting nutrients from fruits and vegetables. However, the wrong kind of smoothie can be a bad choice for people with diabetes, especially when eating out. There’s an infinite number of smoothies you can make, so each person is bound to find several healthy combinations they like. 

Are you wondering if smoothies will spike your blood sugars?

ThAmerican Diabetes Association recommends checking your blood sugars one to two hours after you start eating and/or drinking to capture the peak level of your blood glucose.

Keep in mind that blood glucose results often trigger emotions. Blood glucose numbers can make you feel angry, frustrated, and/or blue. Knowledge is power: tracking your blood glucose levels is wonderful tool to see how your diabetes care plan is working, and whether you need to adjust your plan with the help of your healthcare professional.

Hidden Beet Brownies Recipe

What’s lurking under the fudgy chocolate in those brownies ?

Beets.

Many sneaky home bakers who whip vegetable purees into a variety of baked goods have claim that they are the perfect match of sweet and savory.

Beets add moisture to baked goods without the addition of oil or butter, and they also add a natural sweetness according to The Kitchn website. Beets work well in chocolate desserts because they add moisture, yet the cocoa powder and chocolate mask any possible subtle earthy flavor

Want to try it? Start by baking the beets, even the day before.  According to Early Morning Farm‘s website the fool-proof way is to chop off the top and bottom of each beet, rub them with olive oil, and then wrap them in foil.  Bake at 350F for 45-60 min or more if necessary.  A fork should slide very easily through the beets when done.  The skins will slip easily off.  Puree in a food processor or with an immersion blender. 3 small to medium beets should yield around 1 cup pureed beets.

How it works: Register prior to this event and we will send you the unique code to sign in to our Zoom Video feed. You will need a camera. We’ll all get acquainted and share niceties before the competition starts. Mr. Divabetic will have a list of regular (and some not so regular) items that people may find around their living space. Once we post an item you will have 30 seconds to find it. Each item found will result in points for prizes! At the end of the home hunt we’ll sit back laugh, make smoothies and enjoy a toast together to when we can hang out and do our real scavenger hunts!

You probably know better than we do how diabetes affects your holiday experience. You might feel the weight of diabetes more at this time, because you can’t let go and celebrate like everyone else. Or maybe you do let go and then beat yourself up over it.

That’s why we asked our panel of experts, friends and past Diabetes Late Nite podcast guests to spread some holiday cheer by sharing their favorite products to help keep you ‘happy and healthy’ all year long.

In 1998 Chef Robert Lewis aka ‘The Happy Diabetic’ was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Much of what he heard in those early day was about the foods that were prohibited. Chef Robert Lewis suspected that his days of good eating were over, yet as he worked through his ups and downs, He came to realize that the selection of foods he could and should eat was vast and included many of his favorites. This motivated him to attempt to create delicious, diabetic-friendly dishes that were also easy to prepare.

Chef Robert Lewis is a nationally recognized author, public speaker and spokesperson for all people affected with diabetes. He travels the country speaking on the benefits of healthy eating not only for people affected with diabetes, but also for anyone who would like to eat and live a healthy lifestyle

On December’s Diabetes Late Nite podcast we’re celebrating a Blue Christmas. I chose this theme in December because ‘Blue’ is the color that I most closely associate with diabetes and I feel that the mental health issues related to diabetes are often overlooked and ignored. Some listeners may feel that talking about depression is depressing  which is understandable. However, I feel it is far more important to reach out to those coping with diabetes distress and burnout  and let them know they are not alone. Personally, I am also ‘blue’ this holiday season because it will be the first Christmas without my father, Stanley Szadek. My father passed away over the Thanskgiving Day weekend. He was a tremendous support to me throughout my life.  I will miss him dearly.  Please join us!

You’re not alone.

While it’s true that sadness and/or depression at holiday time can be a reaction to the stresses and demands of the season, people with diabetes are more likely to be depressed than others states David Spero BSN, RN for Diabetes Self-Management.

Diabetes can cause complications and health problems that may worsen symptoms of depression. Depression can lead to poor lifestyle decisions, such as unhealthy eating, less exercise, smoking and weight gain — all of which are risk factors for diabetes.

The good news is that diabetes and depression can be treated together. And effectively managing one can have a positive effect on the other.

If you think you might be depressed, seek help right away. Your doctor or diabetes educator can refer you to a mental health professional.
