The Mermaid Parade is the nation’s largest art parade. It brings together creative minds in art and fashion and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to Brooklyn’s amusement district. The Parade originated to help preserve the tradition of Mardi Gras-type events popular in Coney Island between 1903 and 1954.
This year, painter, performer, and sideshow historian Joe Coleman will be King Neptune, and his wife, artist, and photographer Whitney Ward will be Queen Mermaid. The couple will officially open the beaches for the beginning of summer and celebrate the sun, sand, sea, and salt air.

At year’s end, amid the shortest days,
Holidays, foods, celebrations and fun,
Then comes the spring and the sun’s slow return
Signaling winter is over and done.
Buds and sprouts among the weeds,
Chirping of birds waking up from their sleep
Warmth and light beaming through branches and leaves
Grass emerging from roots so deep.
Winter skin languishes, covered in layers
Fighting for warmth and protection from cold
Seeking to flourish and nourish in private
Hiding from temperatures vicious and bold.
Then in the summer our skin makes appearance
Swimming suits, shorts, sandals, and more…
Outdoor activities, family parties,
Boating and sailing and life at the shore.
Our feet need protection, along with our eyes
As well as acknowledging sun’s heavy rays…
Hydration and water – fresh air and sun
Enjoying the season in exciting ways.
We want to enjoy the season with safety
Showing our skin but make sure we take care
Doing our best to respect diabetes
And living our best life while staying aware.

Diabetes advocate turned reluctant amateur sleuth, Mr. Divabetic finally takes the plunge and ventures into a new career as a healthy caterer. I Woke Up This Morning by Lorraine Brooks
Iwokeup this morning, as always,
And while walking through my hallway,
I looked in the mirror, reflecting,
And thought, why am I so rejecting?
There’s food in my pantry and clothes on my back
And 2 cars in my garage.
I‘ve plenty of colleagues and friends; I don’t lack,
I‘m blessed with a fine entourage.
There’s heat in the winter and cool when it is hot,
There’s no way I‘m doubting the blessings I‘ve got.
So what if I need to count calories now,
I still can consume that dessert anyhow.
My kidneys are fine, and my eyesight’s okay,
And I can still sleep at the end of the day.
I have a few dollars, and I can have fun
And not have to justify it to anyone.
I make my decisions and live with my fears
And thankful for 65 wonderful years.
This life here on earth can be tragic enough
Without adding to it irrelevant stuff.
The gift is in living and doing our best.
And then letting go of all of the rest.
So have a good time and be of good cheer.
And you will enjoy the time you have here.

Diabetic Macular Edema (DME) is an accumulation of fluid in the macula-part of the retina that controls our most detailed vision abilities-due to leaking blood vessels. To develop DME, you must first have diabetic retinopathy.
Diabetic retinopathy is caused by damage to the blood vessels in the tissue at the back of the eye (retina). Poorly controlled blood sugar is a risk factor. Early symptoms include floaters, blurriness, dark areas of vision, and difficulty perceiving colors. Blindness can occur.

Try to manage your expectations about your blood sugar levels and A1c test results and set smaller, more realistic goals.
It also helps to stop using phrases like ‘good’ or ‘bad’ blood sugar – as this can constantly feel like you’ve done something wrong. Talk about high or low blood sugar instead.
Taking time for yourself, like booking a massage or setting an evening aside for a long bath can help you relax.

Developing these habits isn’t always easy. Adapting to a new routine can be tricky, and it’s often tempting to want to return to old ways if we don’t see immediate results. One of the biggest mistakes people make when forming a new habit is taking on too much too quickly. Focus on what’s working in your diabetes self-care plan before overhauling diabetes management. Instead of decluttering the entire house, why not focus on one room or closet? Why not focus on the calories you drink rather than everything you eat? If you want to eat healthier, try replacing one dessert daily with a piece of fruit rather than cutting out sugar completely. If you’re going to get into hiking, start with a walk at lunchtime. Setting small goals you can achieve will help keep you motivated along the way.

Judging and Grudging is about Lorraine’s recent real-life encounter with a podiatrist. “I felt she was quite offensive in her lack of knowledge and her lack of using the appropriate language,” says Lorraine. “She was making judgments about me and how I handled my diabetes.”

My new podiatrist, who has never met me,
Feels it is her duty to address my diabetes,
Which does not offend me, although her comments make it clear
That she doesn’t “get” me.
She asks for my latest a1c, and the date,
And l dutifully tell her it was just last month,
that l stay on top of my bloodwork every 90 days,
And it’s been hovering around 8.
She doesn’t even look up from my feet
She shakes her head and makes that disapproving face,
While telling me l could “do better”, and l should lose weight
But in that moment, l refused to feel defeat.
I politely said, with all due respect, that statement is offensive
You have not done a history or proper exam,
You are making assumptions about who and what l am,
And your assessment of me is anything but comprehensive.
First of all, l am type 1, not 2,
I’ve had this disease for over 40 years, and yes, it is a struggle.
But l have no complications, and that includes my feet,
And now l feel l must educate you.
Everything in my life is not a result of what you see.
Every medical concern needs to be addressed objectively.
Whatever you would tell someone of average size
Is exactly what you should be telling me.
Pinched nerve? Tell me what to take, what to avoid, help me to cope.
Gastric reflux? Give me some practical advice l can use.
Don’t assume everything is about my size
Meet me where l am. Offer me hope.
Acknowledge that weight is just another statistic
That health, and well-being, are what you prescribe.
Tell me I’m ok without reservation
And examine yourselves to be more realistic.
