Whitney Houston smoked Newport menthol cigarettes. She admitted many times she could not quit even though she was aware of the damage to her voice caused by smoking. By the end of her life, her voice was shot.
Clive Davis recalls her admitting, “I understand I can’t just cut back. I’ve got to stop. I promise I will.”
Unfortunately, Whitney’s failure to quit smoking menthol cigarettes is not uncommon.
Menthol flavoring masks the harsh taste of cigarette smoke, and menthol smokers engage in more intense smoking behaviors than regular cigarettes.
Basically, menthol cigarettes numb your lungs. It has a cooling and painkilling effect, so people who smoke menthol tend to inhale more deeply and have a harder time quitting smoking. As a result, they suffer greater damage to their health.
About 18.5 million people in the United States are regular menthol smokers. That’s 37% of the cigarette market. Here’s a breakdown of their use by race in the United States:
85% of Black smokers smoke menthols
46% of Hispanic smokers smoke menthols
39% of Asian American smokers smoke menthols
The health effects of smoking disproportionately impact black and brown communities with a higher rate of menthol use.
One can speculate that a superstar like Whitney Houston had the means to seek professional support to help her overcome her menthol addiction. She even had an excellent reason to quit.
Clive Davisfeels that menthol cigarettes destroyed Whitney Houston’s voice. If they can damage a powerful voice like hers, imagine what they can do to your lungs.
“We were trying to get her to stop smoking,” Clive Davis told Playboy, WENN.com reports. “It was a serious problem because it affected her singing.”
Menthols and mint are also extremely popular among teenage smokers. More than half of cigarette smokers ages 12 to 17 use menthol cigarettes.
The more cigarettes you smoke, the higher your risk for type 2 diabetes. People who smoke cigarettes are 30%–40% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than people who don’t smoke. Smoking also makes it harder to manage your diabetes.
New York State Governor Hochul hopes to ban menthol cigarettes and other flavored tobacco while raising the tax on smokes by $1 — claiming it’ll fuel the black market, be hard to enforce and worsen police-community relations.
Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in New York and the US. In 2020, 22.5% of youths used an e-cigarette. Every year, approximately 4,300 New Yorkers under 18 become daily smokers, statistics show.
About 280,000 New Yorkers under 18 are projected to die prematurely from smoking, while 28,200 New York adults die annually.

Heart disease and stroke: People with diabetes are two times more likely to have heart disease or a stroke as people without diabetes
Kidney disease: High blood sugar levels can damage the kidneys and cause chronic kidney disease (CKD) pdf icon[PDF – 1.08 MB]. If not treated, CKD can lead to kidney failure. On November’s Diabetes Late Nite podcast we discussed the new guidelines redefining who should be diagnosed with high blood pressure. Surprisingly doctors say nearly half the US population meet the new criteria.

Under the new guidelines, developed by the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology, anyone with blood pressure of 120 over 80 is considered to have “elevated blood pressure” while any patient with a reading of more than 130 over 80 will be classified as having “Stage 1 High Blood Pressure.” High blood pressure was previously defined as 140 over 90 or higher.
What these guidelines are emphasizing is there’s so much benefit from a better blood pressure number and paying attention to blood pressure and not ignoring it, even if you’ve never had a complication of heart disease.
“Yes, we will label more people hypertensive and give more medication, but we will save lives and money by preventing more strokes, cardiovascular events and kidney failure,” Kenneth Jamerson, a professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan Health System who was involved in writing the guidelines said in a statement.
These new guidelines aim to get the public to recognize that high blood pressure is very important and that it does contribute to what’s the biggest cause of death and disability for Americans, which is heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.
There is real value in taking on the work of getting one’s blood pressure down.
About 25% of people with Type 1 diabetes and 80% of people with Type 2 diabetes have high blood pressure. If your heart’s working overtime all the time then you need to talk to your healthcare provider about lifestyle and medication management.
There is also significant evidence to show that chronic hypertension can speed the arrival of cognitive problems associated with aging, such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. That is because the blood vessels that supply the brain can weaken just like the heart. In a 2009 Clinics in Geriatric Medicine article, Dr. Thomas Obisesan wrote, “hypertension is recognized as the most consistent risk factor for stroke and, importantly, AD [Alzheimer’s disease].”

What is self-compassion and how can it help you to better manage your diabetes self-care?
Self-compassion is treating yourself with the same kindness and support that you would provide for a friend. A recent research study conducted with people with diabetes demonstrated that self-compassion was significantly and positively correlated with higher well-being, lower A1C, and higher engagement with all self-management behaviors. Self-compassion is closely associated with emotional resilience, including the ability to sooth ourselves, recognize our mistakes, learn from them, and motivate ourselves to succeed. Self-compassion is also correlated with reduced levels of anxiety, depression, stress, and shame.
Anyone can learn how to be self-compassionate. Begin by acknowledging how you feel. For example, recognizing that you might feel angry (“I hate my diet restrictions and I’m not losing any weight”); victimized (“I know other people who don’t exercise, and they don’t have diabetes”); or doubt (“My blood sugar levels are always too high. Maybe I am a ‘bad’ diabetic?”). Next, acknowledge that others would probably have similar feelings in the same situation. You are not alone. Finally, express kindness to yourself. What would you say to a friend in your shoes? Perhaps you would say: “It can feel very unfair when you try hard to follow a diet program and you don’t see results right away.” Once you shift your frame of mind from a threat state to self-compassion, you are likely to find yourself calmer. Maybe you can review your menu plan and realize that you have included healthy food choices, but the quantities are too much?
5 Simple Strategies to Soothe Yourself
How would you treat a friend? Respond to yourself in the same way you would respond to a close friend when he or she is suffering.
Explore self-compassion through writing. Write a letter to yourself about your feelings (such as shame, insecurity, etc.) from a place of acceptance and compassion.
Write a self-compassion journal. Keep a daily journal in which you process your difficult issues through a perspective of self-compassion. This activity will help make self-kindness and mindfulness a part of your daily life.
Change you critical self-talk. Acknowledge your self-critical voice and reframe your observations in a more friendly way. Challenge your negative assumptions about yourself and instead use kinder and gentler self-talk.
Taking care of the caregiver. Keep your heart open and help you care for and nurture yourself at the same time that you are caring for and nurturing others.
Self-compassion is about how you motivate yourself; instead of doing it with blame and self-criticism, self-compassion motivates like a good coach, with encouragement, kindness, and support. It’s an example of the Golden Rule in reverse: Learning to treat yourself as you would treat others in need – with kindness, warmth, and respect.
