Luther: Never Too Much Documentary Trailer

Watch the trailer for LUTHER: NEVER TOO MUCH, an intimate look into a musical icon’s stunning life and career. From filmmaker Dawn Porter (John Lewis: Good Trouble), it features interviews with many of Luther’s closest friends, collaborators, me(!), and fans, including Mariah Carey, Dionne Warick, Valerie Simpson, Roberta Flack, Jamie Foxx, and more.

Luther fans will hear how he got his start after crashing a recording session for David Bowie’s Young Americans and becoming one of the most sought-after backup singers for artists such as Chic, Michael Jackson, Barbra Streisand, and Aretha Franklin before his 1981 solo breakout R&B hit Never Too Much.

The Here and Now artist suffered a stroke related to mismanaged type 2 diabetes in 2003. This inconceivable occurrence was the founding inspiration for me to start Divabetic. As Luther’s assistant, I wanted to encourage a new attitude about diabetes. One of our guiding principles is for people living with diabetes to create an entourage of care featuring family, friends, and healthcare collaborators to help with their self-care management.

Sadly, Luther was never able to recover fully. I stayed with him, supervising his care and rehabilitation until he died in 2005. Diabetes may have silenced one of the world’s greatest voices, but his worldwide influence endures.

Get inspired to stay healthy and upbeat about your self-care through Divabetic’s tribute podcasts, videos, Zoom meetups, and more.

Luther: Never Too Much documentary opens in theaters in select cities beginning November 1. Nationwide preview screenings October 30. Presented by Giant Pictures and CNN Films.

Divabetic Salutes Cindy Mizelle

“I have mad respect for athletes and have penned a few songs with more to give all the way around,” says my friend, singer, and songwriter Cindy Mizelle.

Cindy Mizelle is the proud mother of three children. Her two sons are professional athletes. Devin Fuller, a wide receiver with the Atlanta Falcons, and Jordan Fuller, a safety for the Carolina Panthers, have had distinguished careers in the NFL.

Her incredible career includes Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Seeger Sessions Band, Steely Dan, Billy Ocean, Whitney Houston, Dave Matthews, Duran Duran, Freddie Jackson,  Carly Simon, Alicia Keys, and Luther Vandross.

Cindy told Rolling Stone Magazine that growing up, she knew a singing career was in her future, “I just said, “I know how to do this.” I played the flute, too, and I knew scales. Everything was a musical thing for me. And once I found that power, I was like, “I’m going!”

I first met Cindy on Luther Vandross’s Never Let Me Go tour in 1993. Cindy toured and recorded with Luther Vandross for over twenty years. She admits working with Luther felt like family. “I loved everything about him. I could relax and be myself, and he was so supportive. When it came down to my kids, he got them their first shoes.”

Between gigs with Luther Vandross and the Rolling Stones, Cindy managed to squeeze the recording of her debut album, Cindy Mizelle, on Atlantic Records. My favorite tracks include the lead single, “I’ve Had Enough,” ” Smile, and “Back To Emotions.”

Through Cindy, I met the talented performer Katreese Barnes, who was the musical director for SNL and won an Emmy for ‘Dick In The Box.”  I styled Katreese for several shoots and co-produced her show, Rocket Man, featuring the music by Elton John.

A few years later, in 1995, Cindy gave me the gift of a lifetime when she sang lead vocals on the dance song I co-wrote with Keith Haarmeyer, “That Man Of Mine.” The amazing Brenda White-King also performed backing vocals on the record.

I’ll always remember the day we recorded the song in Keith’s one-bedroom apartment in New York City. After Cindy looked at the lyrics sheet, she asked me if I had a specific idea of how I’d like her to sing the lyrics. Then, to my astonishment, she said the chorus line five or six different ways, varying her tone and phrasing with each variation. It was the most incredible thing I’ve ever witnessed. I still have goosebumps thinking about it. The power and control she has with her voice are incredible, too.

I’m not Cindy’s only fan, either. Mariah Carey praises Cindy Mizelle in her memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey: “To me, she was one of the absolute greatest. “Cindy Mizelle was the background singer. She sang with the most gifted vocalists of all time—Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross, and the Rolling Stones. She was a real singer’s singer. Cindy was that girl to me. I looked up to her so much.”

It was also a thrill for me to design costumes for The Lovely Ladies (Tawatha Agee, Brenda, and Cindy) when they were on tour with Dave Matthews Band. Most recently, my boyfriend Joe and I filmed Cindy for Nils Lofgren’s “Ain’t The Truth Enough” music video.

Music is definitely part of her DNA. Cindy Mizelle is the cousin of the famous Mizell Brothers (they dropped the word “e” out of their name), who wrote songs for the Jackson 5 and A Taste of Honey. She’s also the cousin of the Ronettes!!! She told Rolling Stone magazine, “I looked them up and was like, “Oh, my gosh!” That was my motivation there. I’d play their records and figure out what they did. I started singing in the basement and in bands after that.”

She mentions how Ronnie Spector always supported her in her career. It’s truly a pleasure to spotlight this amazing woman whose heart is as big and beautiful as her voice.

Divabetic Salutes Val Young

“I can get in where I fit in, ” says Val Young. “I love all music.”

R&B/soul singer-songwriter Val Young, also known as “Lady V,” was one of the original Mary Jane Girls Band members.

The Detroit-born former Motown recording artist began singing background vocals for The Gap Band, George Clinton, Teena Marie, El Debarge, Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King, Bobby Womack, and Roy Ayers. Her all-time favorite artist is Gladys Knight. Growing up, she used to listen to her music all of the time.

She began singing with Rick James in 1981 on the Street Songs tour. Teena Maire was the opening act. She was also a member of the original Mary Jane Band.

“What a great, great time I had with RJ (Rick James). Recording, working, touring, personal, everything,” says Val Young. “We could be laughing and talking, and he could create a song. Rick James was the best of everything.” She added, “I learned from Rick to be focused. Rick always told me to be someone that someone else wants to be.”

Rick James produced her debut album, Seduction, which included the hits “Mind Games,” “Piece Of My Heart,” and “If You Should Ever Be Lonely.”

“I always wanted to be solo,” said Val Young in a Truth in Rhythm interview on YouTube. “But I still sung backgrounds on the Mary Jane Girls records.”

Her talent and physical attributes impressed Rick James so much that he promoted her as the “Black Marilyn Monroe.”

Packed with so many great songs, Rick James decided against including Val Youngs’ recording of the song “In My House” on the album. Instead, he gave the song to his fledging girl group, The Mary Jane Girls, who released “In My House,” it became a mega-hit. Regardless, Val Young’s Seduction album achieved gold status.

I would listen to Val Yong’s hits on WDKX in Rochester, New York. After school, I would turn up the radio in the art room when I heard the first bars of “If You Should Ever Be Lonely.” I was such a big Val Young fan that I dragged my brother, Rich, and his friend, Teresa, to see her perform live at a small club in Downtown Rochester. The three of us stuck out like a sore thumb in the club.

I may never understand why I grew up listening to R&B when no one else in my family did, but I can trace my career trajectory back to those early years of listening to Val Young, Rick James, and Luther Vandross nonstop on WDKX.

I was a Luther fan long before I worked for him, so I am passionate about helping promote his legacy. It was one of the most magical, defining moments in my life. I’m grateful to stay in touch with Luther’s musical family, promote his musical legacy, and offer diabetes outreach support to his fans.

After the success of her first album and Rick James’s passing, I didn’t hear much of Val Young. I’m not a rap fan, so I assumed she had left the music industry. But her voice can be heard on hit songs with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Too Short, Mark Morrison, and Napoleon. Her most successful collaboration is the song “To Live & Die In L.A.” with Tupac Shakur.

You can’t help but fall in love with Val Young listening to her Truth in Rhythm interview. She’s down-to-earth, funny, and very humble about her success. She was genuinely surprised to learn Mariah Carey covered her song, “If Should Ever Be Lonely.” She said, “I was just so happy and truly blessed.”

Most recently, Val Young, Candice Ghant, and Rick James’ daughter, Ty James, have been performing as the new lineup of The Mary Jane Girls at various Rick James tribute shows.

Thank you, Val Young, for being part of the soundtrack of my life. Her music reminds me of the kid who grew up listening to R&B and was lucky enough to work for one of his idols.

I Loved Working With Cindy Mizelle and Nils Lofgren on Ain’t The Truth Enough Video

“Neal, Who?” I initially said when my friend, Cindy Mizelle, called to ask for my help on a video shoot for Nils Lofgren’s Ain’t The Truth Enough music video. My music taste runs from retro Disco and 80s R&B to house music and Euro-pop. When she called, I was probably listening to either the Emotions (Best Of My Love) or Aretha Franklin (Jump To It).
But what kind of idiot turns down working with the multi-talented, beautiful Cindy Mizelle??? She’s one of my favorite vocalists of all time. Cindy and I worked together with Luther Vandross. Cindy was one of Luther’s longtime backing vocalists on tour and his records. She used to do a step-out on the song, Going In Circles with Luther’s Songs Tour.

Cindy also lent her stunning vocals to my dance anthem, That Man Of Mine, in the 90s, co-written and produced by Keith Harrmeyer. Watching Cindy Mizelle do her thing in front of a microphone was life-changing. Within seconds, I witnessed her switch phrasing and tones to wrap her voice beautifully around the melody.

She has also worked with Whitney Houston, Steely Dan, Alicia Keys, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Ocean, and Dave Matthews Band.
I designed several sets of tour costumes for Dave’s Lovely Ladies (Tawatha Agee, Brenda White-King, and Cindy) in the 2000s. The picture above features costumes with reversible skirts to mix and match. My ideas seem heavy-handed today, especially pairing check prints, bold stripes, and vinyl ruffles. But the idea was to create bold statement pieces that they could pair with other clothing to create their looks.

I’m not the only person who loves and admires Cindy. Mariah Carey praises many singers in her new memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey, but she’s particularly effusive about her. “To me, she was one of the absolute greatest,” writes Carey. “Cindy Mizelle was the background singer. She sang with the most gifted vocalists of all time — Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross, and the Rolling Stones. She was a real singer’s singer. Cindy was that girl to me. I looked up to her so much.”

Of course, once I found out ‘Neal’ is Nils Lofgren, a rock legend, amazing songwriter, and virtuoso rock guitarist who has recorded and performed with Bruce Springsteen as a member of the E Street Band,  I roped master stylist and Hale Organic salon owner Joe Murray into helping on the video shoot.
It was fun for me to step away from diabetes outreach and jump back into styling and working in entertainment, too. I spent half my life pursuing my dreams of working in entertainment. I didn’t have a master plan, just a deep passion that happily carried me a long, long way.

For all his success, Nils Lofgren is a down-to-earth, caring, and kind person. Even though he was on the road touring with Bruce, he found time to drop me an email expressing his gratitude.

Mountains

Ain’t The Truth Enough appears on Nils Lofgren’s new album, Mountains. Nils said the album started out “as a form of therapy, but it very quickly grew beyond that” and that it was “so freeing to work without any restrictions,” calling it “some of the most inspired work” he has ever made. He wrote and recorded the album at his home in Arizona and enlisted a wonderful kaleidoscope of talent, including Ron Carter, Neil Young, and David Crosby.  This album is jammed with great melodies, glorious guitar playing, heartfelt lyrics, and catchy hooks that have this disco kid dancing around.
I’m happy to say I’m now a big Nils Lofgren fan and thrilled to participate in this project. Ringo Starr????? Unbelievable!!!
Don’t worry; I’m not giving up my day job working to glamorize good health for women and their loved ones living with diabetes.

Does Diabetes Cause Baldness?

Sometimes the mirror reflects issues in diabetes self-care.

Did you know that diabetes may cause hair thinning and hair loss?

People with diabetes are more likely to have a condition called alopecia areata.

Alopecia areata is a common autoimmune skin disease, causing hair loss on the scalp, face and sometimes on other areas of the body.

With alopecia, the immune system attacks the hair follicles, causing hair loss on the head and on other parts of the body. People with type 1 diabetes are more likely than people without this condition to develop alopecia areata.

Diabetes itself can lead to hair loss reports Healthline.  The stress of living with a chronic illness may also cause hair loss, or the medicines you take to treat your diabetes. Some people with diabetes also have thyroid disease, which can contribute to hair loss.

Some people with diabetes can slow or stop hair loss by maintaining tighter blood sugar levels and managing stress.

‘No Sex’ is All I Want For Christmas

Mariah Carey’s iconic holiday song, ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ might be at the top of the music charts but ‘SEX’ is at the bottom of Santa’s list for women with diabetes this season.

Vaginal dryness is the most common sexual issue for women who have diabetes and one of the reasons they choose not to have sex during the holidays. High blood sugar levels can harden the blood vessels in the vaginal wall. That can affect lubrication and make sex uncomfortable.

High blood sugar levels can cause nerve damage throughout the body can affect a woman’s ability to experience sexual stimulation and arousal.
