The Mermaid Parade, founded in 1983, officially opens the ocean for summer swimming, teaches mythology to Brooklyn families, and provides self-esteem for Coney Island and artistic self-expression for the New York City arts community.

Over the years, the Mermaid Parade has grown into the largest event of the year at Coney Island, and it is also one of the ten biggest parades annually in New York City.

This year’s version featured dancers, bands, square politicians, people costumed as pirates, octopuses, and sailors, and many women wearing fake fishtails on their bottoms and nothing but sequined pasties — or less — on top!

A Bowl Of Oatmeal Sparks A Best-Selling Author’s Writing Career

Last night on Zoom, Best-Selling Author Viola Shipman revealed how choosing to eat a bowl of oatmeal and blueberries for breakfast instead of Captain Crunch with Crunch Berries sparked her healthy lifestyle revolution and writing career. Viola went on to say how a few small steps like forgoing sugary cereals, walking around the block, and waking up early to write led to significant changes in her life over time.

Healthy eating and daily walks motivated her enough to stop thinking about what could happen negatively (“I can’t write,” “No one will publish my book”) if she became an author. Pushing these doubts aside resulted in more time actually to write. Her walking ultimately turned into running. Viola said her runs helped her creatively figure out plots and characters.

Today, Viola Shipman is 80 pounds lighter and a best-selling author! So the question is, what’s stopping you from having that first bowl of oatmeal? It just might lead you to live your best life.

Gospel Singer Tamela Mann’s 50 Pound Weight Loss Began With Walking

Gospel singer Tamela Mann started her  50+ pound weight loss journey by walking, even though walking was a challenge for her. A few months before beginning her amazing weight loss journey last year she had knee replacement surgery.

“During my recovery, physical activity was difficult for me, but I made it a priority to focus on my mental health and nutrition,” she wrote in an Instagram post her procedure.

One month later, Mann recovered enough to begin physical activity again. “Starting to walk without a cane, thank you to everyone for your prayers. The journey continues,” she wrote in the caption on her instagram post.

Her journey grew to include cutting down her portions, using an elliptical machine, and following WW weight loss program . Tamela Jean Mann is an American gospel singer, and actress. Mann began her career as a singer with the gospel group Kirk Franklin and the Family. Since starting the WW (Weight Watchers) program she has lost over 50 pounds.

Not even knee replacement surgery or a busy schedule has stopped the star from reaching her fitness goals.

Tamela Mann and her husband, David, are working together on their weight loss reports Prevention. David’s favorite healthy foods during sheltering in include watermelon and eggs.

David has asked Tamela to be his “sugar manager since he was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in 2013 according to the Praying Woman website.” If David strays too far from his plan (she notes he has a weakness for sugary breakfast cereals), she gently reminds him.

“You don’t realize that we drink a lot of our sugar: in our sodas, our sugary juices,” David says. “I just tell people: Cut back off the juice and sodas.”

Tamela pre-plans her meals and typically starts her day with eggs, toast, and bacon for breakfast. “I’m beginning to eat the eggs without cheese to save SmartPoints,” she said. Decadent Apple Sauce Truffles Recipe by Call Me PMc

These days we seem to be cooking and baking more like everyone else who is sheltering in during the pandemic. I’ve even had the opportunity to attempt reinventing some of my favorite recipes in healthier ways. 

Recently I discovered that unsweetened applesauce can be substituted for sugar equally: 1 cup applesauce for 1 cup sugar in recipes. If you want to try this swap, you also need to reduce the amount of liquid (milk or water) in the recipe because applesauce is a wet ingredient,. Usually reducing the liquid (milk, water, etc) by a quarter cup will do the trick. If there’s no added liquid, then there’s no need to adjust.

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup old-fashion rolled oats

1/3 cup sugar

3 tsp baking powder

1 tsp salt

1/2 cup buttermilk

3/4 cup unsweetened applesauce

1/2 cup oil

1/3 to 1/2 cup ready-made cream cheese frosting

16 oz white chocolate candy melts

2 tsp vegetable shortening

toffee bits or sprinkles of your choice for top optional
