A Christmas Peril: Divabetic Mysteries Podcast

Enjoy Divabetic’s 8th Annual Mystery podcast, A Christmas Peril, packed with holiday tips for people living with, at risk, and affected by diabetes.

The Holidays are full of surprises— especially after Mr. Divabetic gets a new job as the pastry chef at the St. Nicholas Nursing Home nestled in a cozy Christmas Village. But adjusting to life in a Christmas Village is not all sugarplums and candy canes. Especially when a cantankerous resident, a real-life Ebenezer Scrooge named Mr. Pincher, almost dies——shortly after eating one of Max’s peanut butter swirl brownies. Despite all of the ingredients for danger, Mr. Divabetic and our team of amateur sleuths and his overly protective mother — set out to find the real culprit in the hopes that his name isn’t on a lethal naughty list.

Our story was inspired by Kevin Houdeshell’s tragic true-life story. Thanks to the Houdeshell family for their advocacy efforts on behalf of the Emergency Insulin Act of 2019 and the emergency prescription refill legislation.

Known as Kevin’s or Howdy’s Law, it allows pharmacists to dispense an emergency supply of chronic maintenance medication if the doctor cannot be reached – a common-sense act that could save a life.

Starring Max ‘Mr. Divabetic’ Szadek, USA Best Selling Author Tonya Kappes, Mama Rose Marie, Patricia Addie Gentle, Terri Seidman, MaryAnn Nicolay, Trisha Artman, Catherine Schuller, Chef Robert Lewis, Seveda Williams, and Wendy Radford.

Special thanks to the Houdeshell family and Pharmacist Mandy Reece. Original music by Ivan Hampden Jr., Celine Dions vocals courtesy of SONY Music. Produced by Leisa Chester Weir.

In the spirit of Scrooge’s awakening at the end of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, we encourage you to honor Christmas in your heart by living in the Past, The Present, and the Future. Try to embrace the Spirits of all Three and the lessons that they teach.

Divabetic: A Fighter With a Centerfold Face

“Imagine a fighter with a centerfold face.” is one of singer-songwriter Miranda Lambert’s favorite lyrics. “That’s how I picture all of my friends. They’re strong — and gorgeous. They make me proud.”

Miranda might sing about the bathroom sink but if you’re using insulin therapy to manage your diabetes, do not store insulin in the bathroom. Bathrooms tend to get overheated and can be too hot for insulin. Choose a temperature-controlled closet or cabinet that is easy to access.

Miranda Lambert is one of the biggest names in the industry, but she knows she isn’t perfect. The multi-time Female Vocalist of the Year winner says not winning ‘Nashville Star’ in 2003 was the best thing that could have happened. It gave her time to mature as an artist and to write and record songs that she believed in.

“When you’re in the industry and you hear ‘platinum’ you think of platinum album,” says Miranda. “But platinum is a lot of things: its hair, it’s diamonds and platinum, it’s Bud Light Platinum, it’s the color of an Airstream.”

Platinum is a double-meaning title. First, it refers to Miranda Lambert’s hair — as she sings on the title track, “what doesn’t kill you only makes you blonder” — the second meaning refers to her fame, a topic she returns to often throughout her fifth record.

The old-time shuffle Gravity’s a Bitch is a riotous admission that there’s no denying the ravages of old age. Aging with diabetes isn’t easy but it is doable.

Sure, over time, the effects of diabetes can become much more complicated. The disease can lead to serious, even life-threatening problems from your head to your toes. But with age comes wisdom. Some aspects of your self-care that were daunting at first become automatic. Most divas with diabetes we talk to, admit that sticking with a plan is solid advice.

Miranda Lambert and her album Platinum are inspiring us to talk about the high cost of living with diabetes on our popular monthly podcast.

The International Diabetes Federation is leading a three-year World Diabetes Day campaign to improve access to diabetes care and highlight the need for increased action to prevent diabetes and its complications. Securing universal access to insulin for all remains a global challenge. The barriers to access and affordability are complicated. The multiple steps involved in the production, distribution, and pricing, as well as the infrastructure required to ensure the appropriate and safe use of insulin are laced with greed. Get involved in the #insulin4all campaign to unite the diabetes community to fight together for access to diabetes supplies, care, and treatment for everyone.

Guests include Patricia Addie-Gentle RN, CDCES, Dr. Beverly S. Adler PhD, CDCES, Neva White DNP, CRNP, CDCES, Poet Lorraine Brooks, Best-Selling Author Kim BoykinMarina Tsaplina, and Mama Rose Marie.

We’re playing selected songs from Miranda Lambert’s album, Platinum courtesy of SONY MUSIC.

9 Divabetic Mystery Podcasts Available On Demand

This year we celebrate presenting our ninth original Divabetic Mystery podcast on Blog Talk Radio.  We fill our mystery podcasts with diabetes and diabetes self-care information, a suspenseful cozy mystery, and a few laughs.

We use a cozy mystery format to show how the average person can make a difference. It doesn’t matter if the protagonist is a knitter, a librarian, or in our case, a diabetes advocate with a passion for baking —that person can solve a murder.

In cozy mysteries, the amateur sleuth is surrounded by a group of family and friends, cheering her or him on to solve the crime. These supporting characters help and hinder, and it is a story about a community banding together for what is right.

You can apply the basic principles of our mystery podcast to managing your diabetes. We suggest you work with a team of healthcare collaborators to achieve optimum health rather than go it alone. Don’t be afraid to ask ‘stupid’ questions – knowledge is power. And when you are in doubt, know that we believe in you! You can do it.

Divabetic Mysteries: A Christmas Peril

Join us for Divabetic’s Annual Mystery podcast: A Christmas Peril scheduled for Thursday, September 30, 2021, 6 PM, EST.

The holidays are full of surprises after Mr. Divabetic becomes the new pastry chef at the St. Nicholas Nursing Home. But adjusting to life in a Christmas Village is not all sugarplums and candy canes. Especially when a cantankerous resident, a real-life Ebenezer Scrooge, named Mr. Pincher almost dies——shortly after eating one of Max’s peanut butter swirl brownies. So despite all of the ingredients for danger, Mr. Divabetic, our team of amateur sleuths, and his overly protective mother must set out to find the real culprit. Or will his name end up on a lethally naughty list?

This year’s Divabetic Mysteries: A Christmas Peril is based on the real-life story of 36-year-old Kevin Houdeshell who ran out of insulin over the New Year’s holiday in January 2014. He ended up with dangerously high blood sugars that spiraled into diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), leading to him die alone in his apartment.

Thanks to the Houdeshell family for their advocacy with the Emergency Insulin Act of 2019 and the emergency prescription refill legislation, what happened to Kevin doesn’t have to happen to anyone else in several states. Known as Kevin’s or Howdy’s Law, it allows pharmacists to dispense an emergency supply of a chronic maintenance medication if the doctor cannot be reached. States that have passed Kevin’s Law include Ohio and Florida in 2016; Arkansas, Arizona, Illinois, and Wisconsin in 2017; Idaho, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Tennessee in 2018; and Colorado, Indiana, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Utah, and West Virginia in 2019. In many states, votes in favor of the legislation were unanimous.

Starring Mr. Divabetic. Best-Selling Author Tonya Kappes, Mama Rose Marie, Patricia Addie-Gentle RN, CDCES, Maryann Nicolay  BA, DTR, Catherine Schuller, Terri Seidman, Wendy Radford, Seveda Williams, Chef Robert Lewis aka ‘The Happy Diabetic’, and Trisha Artman.

Medtronic Launches Discount Program

Medtronic has launched a CGM Access Discount program, which allows users without insurance coverage, or those who switched insurance or lost coverage, to access a discounted out-of-pocket cost for a Medtronic CGM. The discount enables eligible patients to pay $180 for a Medtronic CGM (with a 12-month warranty) and $60/month for sensors. For more information on the program, click here. This program will help people while the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) reviews proposed new changes that, if finalized, would expand Medicare coverage for CGMs.

Earlier this year, Medtronic expanded its Medtronic Assurance program for U.S. customers who lose their jobs and health insurance due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Current eligible customers can receive a three-month supply of sensors, infusion sets and reservoirs at no cost.

Medtronic’s InPen integration with real-time Guardian™ Connect CGM system (continuous glucose monitoring) data helps people get to the right dose at the right time, by having all the data they need in one convenient place. Insulin insights and CGM data now appear together, so you can view doses, active insulin, and current glucose in one view without switching apps.

What is an InPen?

InPen is an insulin pen system designed for individuals using insulin injections and want the benefits of smart diabetes tech. The InPen app gets information from the InPen to keep track of diabetes data and help with insulin management decisions.

It automatically records insulin doses, tracks active insulin, and recommends mealtime and correction doses based on a bolus calculator. These features are especially impactful when it comes to determining how much insulin to give.

What is the Guardian™ Connect CGM system?

The Guardian™ Connect CGM system monitors glucose levels day and night, sending precise readings automatically to the app. The sensor continuously converts tiny amounts of glucose  into an electronic signal. Your system then uses these signals to provide sensor glucose values. The system includes a small sensor that can be worn up to seven days and a slim, discreet Bluetooth transmitter that can be worn in almost any situation.

It’s important to note that you will need to have both the InPen and Guardian Connect apps on your smartphone to enable real-time data sharing. InPen will be used to manage insulin and dosing, while the Guardian Connect app will manage your glucose and alerts. You will need to enter a blood glucose reading to calibrate in the Guardian Connect app and to use the bolus calculator in the InPen app. Since the data sharing is made possible by CareLink Personal software, you’ll also need to have an internet connection to see data in real time. Our goal is to continue building upon this technology and ease the burden of the daily decisions of managing diabetes.

The InPen and Guardian Connect CGM apps work on both iOS and Android devices. Click here to see if your device is supported.
