Spinning Around in The Soul Train Dance Line at the Luther Vandross Celebration in Harlem

Just wanted to share this amazing experience from Thursday night’s Soul Train Tribute to Luther Vandross at Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem, NY.

We kicked off the free outdoor screening of the Luther: Never Too Much documentary with a Soul Train Dance Line, and it was genuinely heartwarming to see so many people, including those using mobility devices, participating with such an upbeat attitude and joyful spirit.

It’s reported that as high as 80% of non-traumatic lower limb amputations happen due to mismanaged diabetes. Regardless of how or why someone experiences a lower limb amputation, it can stop them from wanting to take care of themselves and their diabetes self-care in the future. Allowing these people to still participate in social events and gatherings could boost their morale.

Moments like these remind me of the incredible resilience and determination of people facing challenges. Witnessing someone joining the Soul Train Dance Line on her scooter made me smile and brought back many beautiful memories of our past events.

We can’t wait to return to more outreach events soon to spread positivity and help everyone glamorize good health!

Free Screening of Luther: Never Too Much Documentary Tonight!

Join me tonight for the free screening of the Luther: Never Too Much documentary, live Luther Tribute performances by Keith Anthony Fluitt, and a Q&A Panel with Fonzi Thornton and Dawn Porter in Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem.

Knowing and working for such an incredible artist and caring man was an honor. It’s a privilege to appear in the documentary to raise awareness of the tragic consequences of mismanaged type 2 diabetes. Seeing the trauma I experienced in my face on screen as I recalled the initial moments after Luther’s stroke made me realize how grateful I am to everyone who has supported, encouraged, and partnered with me on my various diabetes outreach efforts through my nonprofit organization, Divabetic. Sadly, I wasn’t able to help Luther initially after he suffered a stroke. Heed my advice: if you are someone you love who has experienced a stroke, don’t wait to seek help or try to sleep. Every minute counts. The longer a stroke goes untreated, the greater the potential for brain damage and disability.

Act F.A.S.T. to help identify the early signs and symptoms of a stroke:

F: Is there drooping on one side of the face? Is the person unable to smile? Has their mouth or eye drooped? 

A: Can the person raise both arms and keep them there? Is there weakness or numbness in an arm or leg? 

S: Is the person’s speech slurred or garbled? Are they unable to speak at all? Do they need help understanding what you’re saying to them? 

T: If you notice any of these signs, call emergency services immediately

If you’re a Luther fan, please, “Keeping Your House A Home” by learning how to prevent diabetes health-related complications such as stroke, kidney failure, lower limb amputation, and blindness has been my mission for the past 20 years, and it will continue to be.

Luther Vandross Soul Train Tribute in Harlem

Join me for the upcoming ImageNation’s SOUL TRAIN Tribute to Luther Vandross on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at 6 PM, in Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem, NY.

It’s going to be a sensational night celebrating Luther’s legacy. The night starts with DJ Stormin Norman and a Soul Train Dance Line. Several local performers will perform, including Chandlar and Karen J, Chris Rob, Heshima, Michael Pollydore, and our friend Keith Anthony Fluitt. Keith performed a few of Luther’s iconic hits at Divabetic’s Luther Vandross Music & Style Celebration in April. 

After the outdoor screening of the Luther: Never Too Much documentary, Director Dawn Porter and singer and songwriter Fonzi Thornton participate in a Q&A session.  
The celebration continues with an AfterParty featuring live bands and a DJ interweaving Luther Tributes in their sets at Shrine World Music Venue, 2271 Adam Clayton Powell Jr Blvd between 133rd & 134th Streets, New York, NY 10030.

Earlier this week, I spoke to one of the event organizers,  Joy Enterprises’ Marko S. Nobles, owner of Rhythm and Soul Radio.  Marko spent years learning, growing, and becoming an experienced PR, Marketing, Radio, Event Production, and Entertainment professional.

Marko’s Rhythm and Soul Radio played Ivan Hampden Jr. and Paulette McWilliams‘ song “Mama Kitchen Table” last summer. Paulette and I wrote the lyrics to this song, which topped the UK Soul Charts. Marko, a stroke survivor, said Joy Enterprises hosts a Soul Train Tribute every year to celebrate Don Cornelius‘s legacy of Don and the artists who appeared on Soul Train. Past honorees include superstars Stevie Wonder, Prince, Aretha Franklin, and James Brown.  

“I grew up on Soul Train,” says Marko. “It was a Saturday morning staple in our households.” When I asked Marko why he chose Luther as this year’s featured artist, he said, “Luther had strong ties to the Apollo, starting with ‘Listen My Brother.'” A teenage Luther Vandross was part of Apollo’s musical ensemble, Listen My Brother, which performed several times on Sesame Street during its early seasons.

Every year, there’s an independent film tied into the celebration, along with multiple mini-concerts featuring local independent artists performing songs by their legends. 

“I’ve always been into radio,” adds Marko. His company, Rhythm, and Soul Radio was born from his weekly Tuesday night WHUR radio show on City College, which follows our friend Alyson Williams’ program. 

Like the upcoming Luther Celebration in Harlem, Marko’s internet-based Rhythm and Soul Radio channel celebrates independent artists.

On this Divabetic podcast, writer Clarence Waldron talks about his stroke, recovery, working as Senior Editor and Writer of Jet Magazine, and his memories of Luther Vandross and Aretha Franklin.

In the documentary, I discuss the traumatic moment when I discovered Luther after he suffered a stroke related to mismanaged type 2 diabetes. Unfortunately, Luther’s recovery was short-lived; he passed away in 2005.

Twenty years ago, Clarence interviewed Luther’s mother, Mrs. Mary Ida Vandross, for Jet Magazine after Luther suffered a stroke due to mismanaged type 2 diabetes. Clarence and Marko’s stories are excellent reminders of why it’s essential to ACT F.A.S.T. if you or a loved one is experiencing a stroke. The acronym FAST (Facial drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulties, and Time) has been used by the National Stroke Association, American Heart Association, and others to educate the public on detecting stroke symptoms.

I styled one of Luther’s outfits for the “I Know” album uncredited. At the time, Luther had gained considerable weight and was not interested in clothes or being photographed. 

By this time in my tenure with Luther, I knew I had to bring some clothes (in his sizes) to supplement what the stylist had brought to shoots. I found a navy blue Polo Anorak jacket with a white stripe down the sides at Bloomingdale’s that camouflaged his size. Much to Luther’s dismay, the photographer shot Luther on the back of the set piece. It was a bare wood wall. I think I kept the jacket 🙂 George Corsillo, who designed Luther’s album covers starting with the Night I Fell In Love, was involved in the shoot. If I recall, Luther loved the cover design from the first minute he saw it.

Harlem Heaven’s Hats at Harlem Week

Our friend, hat designer Evetta Petty, wowed everyone with a fabulous Hat Fashion show at Harlem Week. Her collection was absolutely breathtaking, drawing inspiration from nature.

Remember, we also partnered with Evetta and her boutique, Harlem’s Heaven Hats, for the “Hat Boxing” diabetes outreach events. It’s been fantastic to work together, and we’re excited for more wonderful collaborations in the future!

This year, Evetta Petty was the first Black milliner to join the Royal Ascot Millinery Collective and the only American representative. Her stunning ‘Blue Note’ hat is in the Royal Ascot Millinery Collective.

“No matter how famous you get, and how wonderful it is that your career has taken off, it means nothing if you don’t manage your diabetes,” says Evetta Petty.


New York Fashion Icon Evetta Petty, the owner and designer of the New York City Hat Boutique Harlem’s Heaven, shares how she stays on track with type 2 diabetes while running a successful small fashion business.

A 12-ounce serving of Coca-Cola contains 39 grams of sugar, more than the recommended daily added sugar intake for both men and women. This is equivalent to about 9.75 teaspoons of sugar.

Sensational Spray Painted Summer Hats

Summer is the season of outdoor concerts. It’s a great way to enjoy music, but excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause skin damage. Protect yourself from the sun with style!

Our friend Evetta Petty, the owner of Harlem Heaven’s Hats, puts pizzazz into sun protection with a unique collection of spray-painted sun hats featuring brightly colored fruits are fun, fun, fun!

By the way, Evetta Petty is off to the races—the UK’s Royal Ascot, one of the most famous in the world. She is the only American milliner represented at Ascot this year, and she’s the first Black milliner ever to have a hat selected for the Royal Ascot Millinery Collective. Twelve milliners were chosen from all over the world. Her ‘Blue Note’ hat is simply FABULOUS!


Most skin cancers are preventable. Proactive approaches to sun protection are essential. Wearing protective clothing, seeking shade, and avoiding indoor tanning are great ways to have fun and protect yourself from the sun.

The American Academy of Dermatology suggests using at least an SPF 30, but higher is better. It is important to reapply every two hours, especially if out in the sun or in the water.

Divabetic Salutes Alyson Williams

My friend, Alyson Williams, is an incredibly talented entertainer who knows how to captivate an audience. I had the pleasure of seeing this Emmy Award winner live at Ashford and Simpson’s Sugar Bar on Valentine’s Day, where she performed with Nat Adderley Jr. Her stage presence was absolutely dazzling. She had everyone in the room mesmerized by her music and stories. 


In an interview with Perspectives on BronxNet, Alyson said, “There is still an audience that looks to me for what I bring to the table. I have to find new and creative ways to reinvent myself, make it good, and keep it steeped in elegance.” 

With a lifetime of experience in the music industry, Alyson has dedicated herself to making people smile through her music. She comes from a musical family, with her father being the bandleader Bobby Booker. She began performing at a young age, showcasing her singing and dancing skills. After college, she became a well-known backing vocalist for  Melba Moore, Bobby Brown, and Evelyn Champagne King. She was also part of the singing group High Fashion. 


Her work on several early hip-hop songs helped her make a name for herself in the music business, leading to her signing by the Def Jam label’s Russell Simmons in the late 80s. Her sultry signature song, “Just Call My Name,” and success earned her the title of “The First Lady of Def Jam.” Alyson Williams’ soulful delivery of “Just Call My Name” struck a chord with listeners, contributing to its instant success. Its meaningful lyrics and heartfelt delivery make it a powerful expression of love, support, and the universal human yearning for emotional connection.

Recently, Alyson teamed up with Najee for a beautiful rendition of “Valentine Love,” which topped the charts. The song is a true work of art; everything about it feels just right. In addition to her music career, Alyson is an on-air personality on Harlem’s WHCR-FM, where she hosts the popular show “Love Notes with Alyson Williams.” In an interview on Dreamers Unite with Sherri Pullum, she said her favorite singer is Ella Fitzgerald. Dr. Maya Angelou called her ‘the songbird.’

Her talent and charisma shine through in everything she does, making her a true icon in the music world. She said, “Every day is a day at the school of hard knocks. You get another lesson in making it work, keeping the balls in the air, juggling, and still keeping your sanity.”

Her advice about saying healthy is straightforward, “just try.”

New York Fashion Week: Meet Hat Designer Evetta Petty

Evetta Petty, the owner and designer of New York City’s Harlem’s Heaven Hats, shares how she stays on track with type 2 diabetes while running a successful small fashion business.

She is known for her big and bold hat pins, and her hats have humor, whimsy, rhythm, and fantasy. Evetta’s motto is, “I’ll make a hat out of anything.” Her hats have captured worldwide attention and have been worn to the Kentucky Derby and Royal Ascot in England.

Evetta designs an extensive line of hats and accessories. She travels to cities like Tokyo, Rome, Hong Kong, and New Delhi, looking for unusual textiles to create a more global headwear experience.

Her hats have been worn by many celebrities such as Patti LaBelle and Star Jones, and featured on TV shows like Anderson Cooper Live and The View. She has created hats for movies, fashion magazine covers, and editorials such as Essence, Jet, and Italian Vogue, it, Mujer Unica, Vibe, Fashion Affair, and The New York Times.

Does The 12-3-30 TikTok Challenge Really Work?

The 12-3-30 challenge on TikTok consists of setting a treadmill to a 12% incline and walking at 3 miles per hour for 30 minutes.

Last year, the challenge went viral after many TikTokers lost a sustainable weight. The people who created the challenge believe it can help anyone burn more calories, maintain strength and build muscle while alleviating joint problems.

A new twist to my existing workout sounds like fun! 

Actually, the 12-3-30 workout sounds like fun on paper. As someone who warms up on a treadmill before group exercises (it’s the only way I will do over 100 situps), I frequently walk on the gym treadmill at the  Level 3 (3 mph) setting. It is a moderate-paced walk. However, when you’re on a substantial incline Level 3 setting is vigorous.

The press release for the 12-3-30 challenge states walking uphill during a treadmill workout at the same pace as regular walking may increase endurance, improve performance, and increase lean muscle mass.

It all sounds good, but I’m over 50. At my age, sustaining that pace on a steep incline for thirty minutes might require a defibrillator. For me, the angle or the speed would have to be lowered. I would reduce the incline even though the experts behind this challenge say inclines strengthen joints. Too many of my friends from my adult volleyball league have suffered joint issues. Many under 60 have opted for joint replacement surgery.

As I mentioned, I love adding a new twist to my workout. I think it’s important to vary your workouts to keep yourself motivated.  One of the big reasons why people struggle to work out regularly is due to repetitive exercise burn-out. Many people perform workouts they don’t actually enjoy just because they consider the workout “good for them.” Or they work out because they overate or overindulge. They treat it as a form of punishment.

I’m doing everything I can to avoid Prediabetes. Regular exercise is a big part of my overall health plan.

Prediabetes is a serious health condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough yet to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. Approximately 96 million American adults—more than 1 in 3—have prediabetes. Of those with prediabetes, more than 80% don’t know they have it.

Keeping your workouts fresh is not only fun but is vital to help you commit to lifelong fitness. So if this challenge appeals to you and keeps you motivated, go for it!

If you discover prediabetes, remember that it doesn’t mean you’ll develop type 2. Working with a team of healthcare collaborators, you can create a personalized treatment plan and alter your lifestyle through food choices and physical activity. Even small changes can have a huge impact on delaying or preventing diabetes.

Instead of decluttering the entire house, why not focus on one room or closet? Why not focus on the calories you drink rather than everything you eat?  If you want to eat healthier, try replacing one dessert daily with a piece of fruit rather than cutting out sugar completely. If you’re going to get into hiking, start with a walk at lunchtime. Setting small goals you can achieve will help keep you motivated along the way.
