Don’t Miss February’s Divabetic Podcast With Music From Frank Sinatra

Frank Sinatra helps us mark the hundredth year anniversary of the first person receiving insulin on Divabetic’s February podcast scheduled for Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at 6 PM, EST.

In January 1922, Leonard Thompson, a 14-year-old boy dying from diabetes in a Toronto hospital, receive an injection of insulin and was literally brought back to life.

By 1923, insulin had become widely available, saving countless lives around the world, and Frederick Banting and J.J. R. Macleod, the two scientists who began preparations for the first insulin treatment to be administered to a human, were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine. To this day, it’s still the quickest that a Nobel Prize was awarded following the discovery of a medical breakthrough.

Frank Sinatra was an American singer and motion-picture actor and one of the most sought-after performers in the entertainment industry.

He is responsible for bringing jazz out of itself and into popular music and making it stick. Instead of being the singer with the band, he made himself into an instrumentalist—of the voice.

Many considered Frank Sinatra to have been the greatest American singer of 20th-century popular music.

Podcast guests: Fran Carpentier, Mama Rose Marie, and Patricia Addie-Gentle RN, CDCES. Throughout the podcast, we will be featuring music from The Voice Of Frank Sinatra courtesy of SONY Music.

Oven Roasted Sweet & Savory Sweet Potatoes By Divabetic

Last weekend, I made these sweet and savory sweet potatoes and served them with grilled pork chops. It was my first attempt at creating a savory and sweet flavor using Splenda. They were easy to make and delicious!

Oven Roasted Sweet & Savory Sweet Potatoes Recipe

Ingredients
3 medium-sized sweet potatoes
2 tablespoons of Splenda brown sugar blend
2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon of red pepper flakes
pinch of kosher salt and ground black pepper to taste

Directions
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).

Boil whole sweet potatoes for 15 minutes until soft

Let sweet potatoes cool.

Cut sweet potatoes into wedges, keeping the skin intact.

Mix sweet potato wedges with Splenda brown sugar mix and red pepper flakes. Drizzle olive oil over the mixture and toss to coat; pour into a shallow roasting pan.

Roast sweet potato mixture in a preheated oven, frequently turning, until the vegetables are golden brown, 20 to 25 minutes. Season with salt and pepper before serving. Enjoy!

Don’t Miss Divabetic’s January 2022 Podcast Tonight at 6 PM!

Tonight, on Divabetic’s free monthly podcast we feature music from Teddy Pendergrass‘s second album. Join me and my guests: Patricia Addie-Gentle RN, CDCES,  Build Jake’s Place Executive Director Arthur Anston, and Yoga For Diabetes Author and Founder Rachel Zinman starting at 6 PM, EST.
Teddy Pendergrass’s second album, “Life Is a Song Worth Singing” was an artistic, commercial, and creative triumph. It positioned him as a sex symbol and showcased his versatility and robust voice to an even greater range.
Teddy Pendergrass fought to educate people about how to treat people in wheelchairs with respect and raise awareness for the simple fact that disability doesn’t mean inability.
This year, Divabetic is championing compassion. Self-compassion is about turning towards difficult and painful feelings and taking action to ease pain and suffering, rather than ignoring it or judging ourselves.
In 1982 Teddy Pendergrass crashed his Rolls-Royce, suffering a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed from the waist down. His life was transformed in an instant. He went from giving sold-out concerts in Europe one week to lying in a hospital bed. He admitted it was devastating.

However, twenty-five years after the accident, he said in an interview that he was grateful for what happened and what didn’t happen in his life. He founded the Teddy Pendergrass Alliance, which aids people with spinal-cord injuries. He spoke out on the issues facing people with spinal cord injuries with the determination that marked his aggressive, full-throated vocal style.
We believe in YOU and your abilities to live your best life.

We’re Coming Around Again with Carly Simon on October’s Podcast 2021

We’re talking about the new FreeStyle Libre 2 App, Sleep Apnea, CPAP machines, and a new line of make-at-home baked good mixes, TruEats, designed for diabetes lifestyles with musical inspiration from Carly Simon.

  • The FreeStyle Libre system measures glucose levels through a small sensor — the size of two stacked quarters — applied to the back of your upper arm. It provides real-time glucose readings for up to 10 days, both day and night.

  • Sleep Apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts. If you snore loudly and feel tired even after a full night’s sleep, you might have sleep apnea.

  • Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy is a common treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. A CPAP machine uses a hose and mask or nosepiece to deliver constant and steady air pressure.
  • TruEats Baking Mixes have 1g of Sugar or Less + Complex (Good) Carbs for great-tasting, steady energy that’s diabetic friendly. Nutritious alternatives for the modern, health-conscious consumer.

Grammy winner Carly Simon was one of the most prominent singer-songwriters in the 1970s. She has recorded over 30 albums, won two Grammies and an Academy Award. Her music has given a voice to the experiences and desires of women who came of age in the 1960s. Carly Simon managed to accomplish her dreams by overcoming severe stuttering and painful migraines to achieve her success. When I was a young child,” Carly Simon has revealed, “I had a stammer. And the only time it went away was when I sang. One day, my mother said to me, ‘Don’t speak it, sing it.’ And that’s what I did.”

Guests include Marten Carlson, Surinder, and Daven Kumar, and Patricia Addie-Gentle RN, CDCES.

October’s Divabetic podcast features music from Carly Simon’s Coming Around Again album courtesy of SONY Music. Don’t Wait For An Occassion To Get An Eye Exam

It’s important for anyone with diabetes to rise to the occasion, not delay and get an annual eye exam from an ophthalmologist so that diabetic retinopathy can be detected early.

In its early stages of diabetic retinopathy (DR), you may not notice any symptoms or changes to your eyesight that this condition is damaging your eyes. If it is not detected and treated in a timely manner, your vision can be damaged permanently.

A basic eye exam cannot detect all aspects of diabetic retinopathy so you will require special exams. To get a better look at the inside of the eye, your doctor might use eye drops to dilate the pupils and may then view the retina with lenses and a special light called a slit lamp.

What Causes Diabetic Retinopathy?

Over time, high blood sugar damages the walls of the small blood vessels in the eye, altering their structure and function. These blood vessels may thicken, leak, develop clots, close off, or grow balloon-like defects called microaneurysms. Often, fluid builds up in the part of the retina used in tasks such as reading. This condition is called macular edema.

What is Macular Edema?

Like I mentioned above, macular edema is the build-up of fluid in the center of the retina. The retina is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye and the macula is the part of the retina responsible for sharp, straight-ahead vision. Fluid buildup distorts vision

In advanced cases, the retina loses its blood supply and grows new, but defective, vessels. These fragile vessels can bleed and cause more problems, including glaucoma.

I had my pupils dilated at my recent eye exam. It’s not painful, and the peace of mind alone is worth protecting my sight was worth any discomfort with light sensitivity.

Still, hesitating to go to the eye doctor? Let the R & B group, Deele‘s biggest hits, “Two Occasions”(you’ve got two eyes, right?)  inspire you to schedule a regular eye exam to maintain healthy vision.

There is a big difference between comprehensive eye exams and routine eye exams. Routine eye exams are the appointments that you make when you need to get a new prescription for your glasses.

A comprehensive eye exam is typically an annual appointment where your eye doctor checks both your vision and overall eye health. This is important because the eye is a small, complex, and essential part of the body. Not only do our eyes help us to see, but they can also show signs of other eye and health conditions.
