Kelly Clarkson‘s fabulous holiday album, Wrapped In Red, is the inspiration behind this year’s annual Divabetic Gift Guide. We asked our contributors to share their favorite ‘red’ gift suggestions for people living with diabetes on the Divabetic blog and Diabetes Late Nite podcast.
Our friend, Jill Weisenberger, MS, RDN, CDE, CHWC, FAND is a great resource for all things nutrition, food and diabetes. Whether she’s speaking, writing, chatting on social media, appearing on TV or working with individuals, her candid and energetic approach appeals to busy people, and her sound nutrition and fitness advice gets results. In fact, her appreciation for science and ability to translate science into actionable information earned her a place in US News & World Report’s 10 Dietitian’s You Need to Follow on Social Media.
Jill shares two of her favorite kitchen appliances that are sure to warm the heart of that special someone on your list who is living with diabetes and enjoys cooking!
“I love it for adding flavor by grating lemon and orange zest, ginger or Parmesan cheese,” says Jill. “It makes getting a huge flavor burst very easy and very fast.”
Why use a Zester?
They’re great for releasing tiny bursts of concentrated flavor from cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, and citrus rind. More slender and with smaller holes than rasp graters, zesters make hundreds of fine cuts. They’re ideal for lemons and limes, since the tiny holes won’t pick up pith (the bitter white part of the skin). The five- or six-hole ones, called lemon or citrus zesters, are good for making lemon curls for martinis and espresso.
Microplane Zester Grater feature expertly crafted surgical grade 18/8 stainless steel blades with razor-sharp edges that effortlessly cut through hard and soft foods without tearing or shredding. The zester has a red, ergonomic TPE soft grip handle that fits securely in your hand. The Microplane zester grater has non-scratch end pieces, a reusable safety cover, is dishwasher safe, and is made in the United States.
“This Fagor Lux Multicooker electric pressure cooker has multiple other functions, including sautéing and slow cooking,” says Jill. “My favorites to make in the pressure cooker are salmon and spaghetti squash with tomato sauce.”
The Fagor Lux Multicooker drastically reduces cooking time. Food will maintain its natural color and flavor, while cooking your meals in up to 70% less time. You can cook a variety of meals in this all-in one machine from meats, grains, desserts and even yogurt . It has 12 preset programs: pressure cook (high and low), slow cook (high and low), yogurt, white rice, brown rice, and risotto programs, as well as simmer, saute, steam and brown settings.
