Since its inception, Divabetic has presented outreach programs in 15 major U.S. cities, reaching hundreds of thousands of women, their families and health care professionals.

Coping with the Stress of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) and Diabetes Dr. Beverly S. Adler, PhD, CDCES

This is a guest blog post from our friend, colleague and Diabetes Late Nite guest, Dr. Beverly S. Adler, PhD, CDCES (Clinical Psychologist and Certified Diabetes Care & Education Specialist).

I have continued working with my patients, via telehealth phone calls, during these past few months, while they and I are following stay-at-home orders to try to flatten the curve of the Coronavirus pandemic. This is some information that I’ve gathered to keep everybody informed.

To manage your health proactively and ward off any respiratory system threats, the WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION recommends the following:

  •  Frequently clean hands by using alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water
  • Avoid touching surfaces others have touched. Use your knuckles to push buttons, elbows to open doors, disinfectant wipes to clean tables or chairs.  Use gloves or wipes to pump gas or when pushing grocery carts.
  • Teach yourself not to touch your face. If you must do so, then wash/sanitize hands, touch your face, wash hands/sanitize afterwards.
  • Practice social distancing—keep 6 feet away from others in public places
  • Make yourself a cloth face mask to wear in public, especially in high traffic areas (i.e. the grocery store)
  • When coughing and sneezing cover mouth and nose with flexed elbow or tissue – throw a tissue away immediately and wash hands
  • Avoid close contact with anyone who has a fever and/or cough
  • If you have a fever, cough and/or difficulty breathing seek medical care early and share previous travel history with your healthcare provider. Contact your healthcare provider via phone/portal first. Going into a clinic can expose you to the virus, so if you are told not to go in, then don’t. Many centers have increased their use of telemedicine.
  • When visiting live markets in areas currently experiencing cases of novel coronavirus, avoid direct unprotected contact with live animals and surfaces in contact with animals
  • The consumption of raw or undercooked animal products should be avoided. Raw meat, milk, or animal organs should be handled with care, to avoid cross-contamination with uncooked foods, as per good food safety practices.

Recommendations for people with diabetes have been endorsed by The American Diabetes AssociationBeyond Type 1Harvard Medical SchoolISPAD, and JDRF.

Establish and maintain strict personal hygiene

  • Wash hands every time you come into contact with an out-of-home item or place.
  • Regularly disinfect high-touch surfaces in your home.
  • Avoid touching your face.
  • Cough or sneeze into your elbow or a handkerchief.
  • Act as though you have COVID and could pass it on.

Minimize risk when out in public

  • Maintain a distance of at least 6 feet from others.
  • Wear a cloth mask or face covering.
  • Adjust schedule to avoid busy times in public places. Take advantage of dedicated shopping times for vulnerable individuals if available.

Small routines can have a big impact on how we feel.

Barbara Corcoran advises, “Staying motivated at home can be tough.  So, I divide my day in chunks. First, I knock out my chores and exercise, zone in on my work, then spend time with my family.  I find being in control of my time keeps me mentally in a good place and makes me feel productive.”

Set yourself up for success with diabetes management

  • Test blood sugar levels more often; your body may be reacting differently under these new circumstances.
  • Familiarize yourself with how to check for ketones. Check for ketones regularly, regardless of blood sugar levels.
  • Secure a sufficient amount of supplies, including ketone strips and severe hypoglycemia treatment (glucagon).
  • Maintain a routine of physical movement and blood sugar friendly eating.
  • Contact your doctor or health professionals by phone / telehealth, if possible, for diabetes management questions and concerns.
  • Lean on your community for help – none of these behaviors are easy, and we all need support. Look into digital and online communities.

Lockdown can lead to “quarantine fatigue.” Try to stay busy by focusing on a project. Some projects my patients are working on include:

  • ·         Working on a vegetable garden
  • ·         Exercising
  • ·         Meditating
  • ·         Journaling
  • ·         Trying new recipes
  • ·         Putting together 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzles
  • ·         Quilting
  • ·         Sorting out their closets
  • ·         Reading a novel
  • ·         Writing a novel

What can you add to this list? One project that I worked on was updating my website. Check it out www.AskDrBev.com.

It’s okay if you can’t wait for lockdown to be over and also be uneasy for it to end. Most importantly please remember that you are not alone. You are not alone in this pandemic and you are not alone living with diabetes. If you need to, check your local area for mental health assistance and your local diabetes associations for help with managing your diabetes. As Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases says, “We’re all in this together.”

Patti LaBelle Inspired The Phrase: ‘Divabetic’

July’s Divabetic Inspiration, Ms. Patti LaBelle performs tonight on A Capitol Fourth on PBS and NPR, July 4 at 8 PM. EST. TUNE IN

It seems only fitting on the 4th of July to reflect back to the time when Patti LaBelle’s electric persona sparked my desire to become a diabetes advocate.

Yes, it’s true the world’s most famous ‘Divabetic’, Patti LaBelle inspired me to coin the phrase ‘Divabetic’ in 2003.  During a Luther Tribute concert at Madison Square Garden she stopped singing and admitted to the sold-out audience that she was living with type 2 diabetes.

Ms. Patti LaBelle said, “I have diabetes, it doesn’t have me.’  and I thought  to myself as I looked up at her on stage, ‘she’s a DIVA, not a diabetic’.

Boom! Boom! Boom!

Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon

It’s always been inside of you, you, you

And now it’s time to let it through

Seconds later, I realized that the ‘V’ in ‘Divabetic’ was a subtle reference to my boss, Luther Vandross’s last name. These initial thoughts are what pushed me to step out of my comfort zone and pursue diabetes advocacy. Shortly thereafter, I started making ‘Divabetic’ t-shirts as a one-time diabetes fundraising effort. My t-shirts had ‘Divabetic written on the front and ‘Sugar’s The Bitch. Not Me.’ written on the back.

I personally gave Patti LaBelle one of my first Divabetic t-shirts and told her that she inspired me to coin the phrase ‘Divabetic’. We were both visiting Luther’s mother, Mrs. Mary Ida Vandross at her home in Philadelphia, PA. I told her how much I appreciated what she said up on stage and mentioned that I wished Luther could have been as open and forthright about his diabetes as she is.

Of course, I’ll never really know what would have happened  if Luther had adopted Patti LaBelle’s attitude. Could he have avoided a major health crisis? All I know is that I wouldn’t have felt as helpless as I did when I found him on the floor of his home after he suffered a debilitating stroke.

Since the day I presented Patti LaBelle with a Divabetic t-shirt, she has happily proclaimed herself a ‘Divabetic’ on TV and radio and in magazine interviews. She has helped me to show women living with, at risk, affected by diabetes that they are NOT alone.

Let Ms. Patti LaBelle inspire you to create your very own entourage of healthcare professionals to live with diabetes like a diva!

According to the American Diabetes Association, your diabetes wellness healthcare team should include: your primary doctor, endocrinologists, registered dietitian (RD), certified diabetes educators (CDE), eye doctor, podiatrist, dentist, therapist, and loving, caring friends, family and co-workers.

You just gotta ignite the light

And let it shine

Just own the night

Like the Fourth of July

My journey may seem ‘glamorous’ but the truth is that diabetes devastated my life and my dream. It silenced Luther Vandross’ beautiful voice.   I encourage you to  make time and ‘keep your house a home’ by learning to prevent a diabetes health-related complication such as stroke from occurring.

Patti LaBelle tells Rachael Ray she calls herself a ‘Divabetic’
Don’t Get Down, Get Diva!

Patti LaBelle loves being in the kitchen even after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. This might sound strange for people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes to hear since many of them have knee jerk reactions to modifying their diets. But Patti LaBelle told People magazine that cooking for herself is why she’s still alive because she controls what she puts in my food and avoids all the things that aren’t good for diabetes. In her latest cookbook, Desserts LaBelle: Soulful Sweets to Sing About, she’s modified some of her signature recipes for fellow “divabetics” using sugar substitutes and cutting down on butter.

Poet Lorraine Brooks shares her thoughts about modifying recipes while sheltering in during the pandemic in her poem, Alone In The Kitchen.

Divabetic Mystery Phrase #16

Can you complete ‘The Staple Singers’-themed Divabetic Mystery Phrase below? Diabetes self-care can be emotionally taxing, but reframing your mind-set can have powerful results.

Divabetic Mystery Phrase

Constant worrying or self-doubt about what you are or are not doing isn’t empowering. That inner dialogue isn’t true, or even real.

If you’re struggling to cope with your diabetes diagnosis: try repeating positive affirmations to yourself each morning to steer your mood in the right direction. This way of thinking can be helpful when the mental burden of diabetes management gets tough.

We also encourage you to seek out a therapist like our colleagues, Dr. Beverly S. Adler CDE, PhD, Janis Roszler or Dr. Wendy Satin Rapaport LCSW, PsyD.

“People without diabetes can feel loneliness, anger, guilt, and shame or use denial, rebellion or secrecy. The addition of diabetes to your daily life increases the likelihood of complex emotions,” says Dr. Wendy Satin Rapaport aka ‘The Diabetes Pysche’. She adds, “My goal is to help you recognize these normal and demanding feelings and then move past them to do better.

Divabetic Mystery Phrase

The Most Iconic Snacks by State

Managing diabetes isn’t about self-deprivation; it’s about moderation especially with snacking.

But ‘how much is too much’?

The answer depends on you and your goals for diabetes self-care. With a little pre-planning, you can enjoy these iconic snacks without derailing the goals that you’ve worked so hard to maintain. If it’s hard to know where to start, click here to go to the Center of Disease Control’s National Diabetes Program.

With 57% of Americans snacking at least once per day, it’s safe to say we like our snacks. From coast to coast, every state boasts its own favorite, iconic, or even official snacks. Here’s a breakdown of notable snacks, treats, and noshes from every state.

Alabama: Moon Pie

Sandwich soft marshmallow filling between two crunchy graham crackers, cover the whole thing in chocolate, and you’ve got yourself a moon pie. This tasty treat may be made in nearby Chattanooga, Tenn., but it’s no wonder it’s been an Alabama favorite since 1917. Alabama residents love moon pies so much, that they dropped a 12-foot one from Mobile’s RSA BankTrust Building to ring in the New Year.

Alaska: Salmon Jerky

The Last Frontier is the first choice in wild-caught salmon. Slow smoked for at least 24 hours over woods such as cherry or alder, salmon jerky packs smoky salmon flavor plus heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids in every bite.

Divabetic Mystery Phrase #14

Can you complete the Divabetic Mystery Phrase below? Diabetes self-care can be emotionally taxing, but reframing your mind-set can have powerful results.

Divabetic Mystery Phrase

Self-help books often promote the power of positive affirmations. If you’ve never tried them before, the idea can seem incredibly awkward to tell yourself how awesome you are.

Positive affirmations help to re-program your thought patterns and change the way you think and feel about things. They are short positive statements that can help you focus on goals, get rid of negative, self-defeating beliefs and program your subconscious mind.

And yes, there is genuine theory and a fair amount of neuroscience behind this practice.
