Bake Off competition is about to kick off. Delusional baker and amateur sleuth Mr. Divabetic is even shocked to find himself being treated as a suspect in the case by the local police, after meeting her just once! Divabetic (Divabetic.org) presents a month-long showcase celebrating 10 years of diabetes podcasting. Each of the featured podcasts spotlights our favorite guests, topics, poems, games and/or musical inspiration. Enjoy!
On Day 14, we’re spotlighting tonight’s Diabetes Late Nite podcast inspired by Patti LaBellle. Back in 2003, Patti LaBelle inspired me to coin the phrase ‘Divabetic’ when she said “I have diabetes, diabetes doesn’t have me.” Her outspoken attitude about living with diabetes pierced my heart as I sat in the audience. I wished that Luther had spoken to me about his diabetes and how to help him in case there was an emergency. Of course, you can’t turn back the clock. All I can do is share my experience with you in the hope you will be motivated to involve your family, friends and co-workers in your daily diabetes self-care.
Tonight’s Diabetes Late Nite podcast also signifies a new milestone in diabetes outreach for Divabetic. For the past decade we have produced at least one podcast each month of every year.
“All great achievements require time,” said Dr. Maya Angelou. She added, “Nothing will work unless you do.”
I staged a ‘comeback’ and so can you!
Back in July 2010, I was brokenhearted and discouraged. A full year had passed since Divabetic lost it’s major funding for it’s national outreach program, Divabetic – Makeover Your Diabetes and there was no light in sight. I felt like a failure. I was staring at a pile of rejection letters from numerous foundations and pharmaceutical companies requesting funding and another pile of requests from women with diabetes and/or certified diabetes educators begging us to bring Divabetic – Makeover Your Diabetes to their city. So it’s probably not a shock to learn that I said, “no” when it was suggested that I host a podcast.
Why would I want to do something new when I had just failed so miserably and let so many people down?
Starting over is not easy. However, I’ve had to do it several times in my life. In 2003, when I found my boss, Luther Vandross after he suffered a devastating stroke related to mismanagement of type 2 diabetes. In 2005, when Luther Vandross died and I lost my job (as well as my identity). In 2009, when Divabetic lost it’s major source of funding. Somehow after suffering every one of these ‘soul punches’ I persisted and so can you! That’s the message of this milestone.
Thank you to my team, our guests, SONY Music and you, our listeners for an amazing decade of diabetes podcasting. I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for your help in helping me get back my groove. GLAM MORE, FEAR LESS!
We’re celebrating Divabetic’s 10th Year Podcast Anniversary with music from the world’s most famous “Divabetic”– Ms. Patti LaBelle. She has inspired us to adopt and promote a ‘NEW ATTITUDE’ about living with diabetes!

Our monthly podcasts are dedicated to Music Lovers living with, at risk and/or affected by diabetes. We aim to be the epicenter of the circle of care, a link between patients and their health care providers, a translator of clinical speak and a bridge between denial and acceptance, fear and confidence
Divabetic was inspired by the late music legend, Luther Vandross and created in 2005 by Max ‘Mr. Divabetic’ Szadek, who, as Vandross’ assistant of 14 years, witnessed his boss, mentor, and friend struggle in silence and solitude with the diabetes and its related complications. Since its inception, Divabetic has presented outreach programs in 15 major U.S. cities, reaching hundreds of thousands of women, their families and health care professionals.

Not only does it simply feel good to believe in yourself, it can help you deal with stress and difficult emotions better.
Constant worrying or self-doubt about what you are or are not doing to manage your diabetes isn’t empowering. That inner dialogue isn’t true, or even real.
If you’re struggling to cope with your diabetes diagnosis: try repeating positive affirmations to yourself each morning to steer your mood in the right direction. This way of thinking can be helpful when the mental burden of diabetes management gets tough.
“People without diabetes can feel loneliness, anger, guilt, and shame or use denial, rebellion or secrecy. The addition of diabetes to your daily life increases the likelihood of complex emotions,” says Dr. Wendy Satin Rapaport aka ‘The Diabetes Pysche’. She adds, “My goal is to help you recognize these normal and demanding feelings and then move past them to do better.“
“Wisdom is avoiding all thoughts which weaken you.” – anonymous
Making your diabetes wellness your top priority will help you find the life flow that you can manage and maintain.
Inner strength comes from knowing you have the tools you need to handle life’s challenges. If at first you don’t succeed then rely on your strength for progress. Optimism is a source of courage and confidence. It motivates us to set goals, to take risks. It encourages persistence in the face of obstacles.
Healthy Self-Belief is Not Bragging, or Boasting.
If you have lost your self-belief, remember that you can regain it with the right steps and actions. One way to jumpstart your self belief is to take inventory of what you’ve already achieved. If you’re struggling with your diabetes self-care, focus on the basics—don’t get bogged down in details or reaching for perfection. And don’t forget to celebrate your successes.
Understanding the Mystery of Your A1C
Many people wonder how their hba1c number relates to their blood sugar levels. After all, daily diabetes self-care management can be a jumble of numbers: weight, blood sugar levels, carbohydrate counts, fat grams, serving sizes, etc. Hopefully, this handy chart will provide some clarification.
When it comes to the numbers, there’s no one-size-fits-all target. A1C target levels can vary by each person’s age and other factors, and your target may be different from someone else’s. If you feel your hbA1C number is on a higher side, say over 7 or 8%, do not worry! Knowledge is power. You can lower your hbA1C by creating your own personal self-care plan with your healthcare professional.

We’re talking about ‘ROMANCE & DIABETES’ on this episode of Divabetic’s Diabetes Late Nite podcast with musical inspiration from Camila Cabello.
Can you complete the Tina Turner-inspired Divabetic Mystery Phrase below? Diabetes self-care can be emotionally taxing, but reframing your mind-set can have powerful results.
Self-help books often promote the power of positive affirmations. If you’ve never tried them before, the idea can seem incredibly awkward to tell yourself how awesome you are.
Positive affirmations help to re-program your thought patterns and change the way you think and feel about things. They are short positive statements that can help you focus on goals, get rid of negative, self-defeating beliefs and program your subconscious mind.
And yes, there is genuine theory and a fair amount of neuroscience behind this practice.
If you’re struggling to cope with your diabetes diagnosis: try repeating positive affirmations to yourself each morning to steer your mood in the right direction. This way of thinking can be helpful when the mental burden of diabetes management gets tough.
Your constant worrying of what you’re not doing and/or how much more you could and should be doing for your diabetes wellness doesn’t feel empowering, because it isn’t. That inner talk isn’t true or real.
Putting yourself down at every chance you get doesn’t draw you closer to what you want to create in your life, nor does it help your diabetes health.
Start believing in yourself and believing deeply—on every level—that you are doing your best.

These days we seem to be cooking and baking more like everyone else who is sheltering in during the pandemic. I’ve even had the opportunity to attempt reinventing some of my favorite recipes in healthier ways.
Recently I discovered that unsweetened applesauce can be substituted for sugar equally: 1 cup applesauce for 1 cup sugar in recipes. If you want to try this swap, you also need to reduce the amount of liquid (milk or water) in the recipe because applesauce is a wet ingredient,. Usually reducing the liquid (milk, water, etc) by a quarter cup will do the trick. If there’s no added liquid, then there’s no need to adjust.
Want to try a recipe using unsweetened applesauce instead of sugar? Check out this wonderful recipe below:

And then I thought, no, better put the chips back.
I’m home in the morning, home all the day,
And I can’t keep on eating and eating this way.
I’ve got to stay healthy, in spite of the news,
Because food and drink are so easy to abuse.
I’m bored, and I’m worried, as all of us are,
I’m eating my Skippy right out of the jar.
But I didn’t give up, or succumb to defeat,
And I started cooking good foods I can eat.
Fresh fruits and vegetables, legumes and beans,
Broccoli, carrots, and cabbage, and greens.
I made a quiche, but it wasn’t high-fat,
I learned how to substitute this for that.
I made a cheesecake with Splenda instead,
And there was no sugar in my banana bread.
I made a stew, and some soup, and some fish,
Without adding butter or oils to my dish.
I’m doing my best, I‘m not perfect, but still…
Instead of much salt, I use spices, like dill.
And I’m doing Zumba online, for an hour
So I don’t lose all of strength and my power.
So I would suggest, while this quarantine goes,
Get out of your jammies and put on some clothes.
Do something healthy, creative, and such
And the time spent alone won’t bother you as much.
For me that was cooking, for you maybe not,
But let’s take advantage of all that we’ve got.
One day this all will be part of the past,
And we can enjoy all our freedoms, at last.

Here’s a sneak peek at Divabetic’s Common Quiz:
What Do All Types of Diabetes Have In Common?
A. your body doesn’t make enough insulin
B. you body can’t use the insulin it does produce
B a combination of both A and B
ANSWER: C). A combination of both A and B. According to WebMD, all types of diabetes have this in common: either your body doesn’t make enough insulin, it can’t use the insulin it does produce, or a combination of both. Insulin is a hormone that helps your body use glucose (blood sugar) for energy.
