My three brothers all have gout. I have psorasis and one brother is also living with type 1 diabetes. Is there any connection?
Gout is a type of arthritis that happens when a substance called uric acid builds up in your blood. It causes joint pain, especially in the big toe
Gout and diabetes are two different health problems, but if you have one, you’re more likely to get the other.
People with type 2 diabetes often have high levels of uric acid in their blood, which could be due to extra fat. If you’re overweight, your body creates more insulin. That makes it harder for your kidneys get rid of uric acid, which may lead to gout.
There’s also a link exists between gout and heart problems and the new findings show the need for people to talk to their doctors about added risks.
Two reasons for why gout might increase the risk of cardiovascular disease are increased oxidative stress and inflammation.

The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend the average adult consume no more than 2,300 mg of sodium or about one teaspoon — over the course of a day.
An even lower daily limit of 1,500 milligrams a day is suggested for people who:
– Have high blood pressure, diabetes or kidney disease. – Are 50 or older. – Are African American; this population has higher rates of high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.
Alternatively, aiming to at least lower your sodium intake by at least 1,000 mg also can help.

On Tuesday, March 26, 2019, 130 people participated in Divabetic’s first-ever Clued Inn Diabetes & Heart Health Escape Room Experiencesponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim. Why was that date chosen? That is because it was the American Diabetes Association’s (ADA) Diabetes Alert Day, which focused on type 2 diabetes awareness. What’s the connection between diabetes and heart health issues? According to the ADA, people living with type 2 diabetes are two times more likely to develop all types of heart diseases that affect the heart or blood vessels, such as heart failure, heart attack, and stroke. In addition to learning about the symptoms of type 2 diabetes, and learning about risk factors and gender differences of heart disease, what lessons were also learned from the Escape Room experience?
There’s no “I” in “team”
When the participants were asked, in small group discussions with certified diabetes educators after they exited the escape room, whether they could have succeeded on their own, the unanimous answer was “no.” The analogy here is that when members worked together as a team they could complete the escape mission; likewise in order to be successful with managing medical issues, such as diabetes or heart health issues, your chances of success are improved when you work together with your health care team. Trying to escape by yourself or manage your health concerns by yourself is not a winning strategy. The lesson is: there is no “I” in “team.” A corollary to that lesson is: “you are not alone.” When it comes to successful diabetes management, a multidisciplinary team approach is recommended. Who should be a part of your health care team?
Your diabetes health care team
The ADA recommends a variety of health care providers who each play a role in your health. However, “you are the most important member of your health care team.” Your health care team depends on you to talk to them honestly and to tell them how you feel.
Although your Primary Care Physician (PCP) is seen for general check-ups and when you get sick, you should consider seeing an endocrinologist for your diabetes care. He or she is a specialist trained in treating diabetes (and thyroid issues). Most people with type 1 diabetes do see an endocrinologist and many people with type 2 diabetes may see an endocrinologist, especially if they are having trouble managing their diabetes or are developing complications. A certified diabetes educator (CDE) may be a nurse, dietitian, psychologist, podiatrist, pharmacist, etc. who works in some way to teach or care for people with diabetes. They may work in hospitals, clinics, diabetes centers, or private practice.
A registered dietitian (RD) is trained in nutrition and can help you learn how the foods you eat affect your blood sugar. He or she can teach you to balance food and medications and activity. You can learn to read food labels and plan healthful meals.
A mental health professional, such as a diabetes-focused licensed clinical psychologist or clinical social worker, can help with the emotional side of living with diabetes. Starting with receiving a diagnosis of diabetes, or coping with feelings of denial, anger, anxiety, or depression while living with diabetes, a mental health expert is an important member of the team. The goal of therapy is to empower you to accept your diagnosis so you can manage your diabetes the best that you can. If a person with diabetes is experiencing diabetes distress, where the person is stressed by all the demands of self-care, therapy can help to improve coping strategies. If a person with diabetes is experiencing symptoms of depression (unrelated to diabetes), a psychiatrist may be helpful to prescribe anti-depressant or anti-anxiety medication (or both). Some psychiatrists also provide counseling.
An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who cares for your eyes. The ADA guidelines recommend that you see your eye doctor at least once a year. You should undergo a dilated eye exam to detect changes in the blood vessels of your eyes due to living with diabetes. When eye problems are caught early, there are very good treatments.
A podiatrist is a specialist who is trained to treat feet and problems of the lower legs. Diabetes makes you prone to poor blood flow and nerve damage in the lower legs. Podiatrists treat corns, calluses, and more serious problems. Do not try to fix these yourself, because you could cause an infection.
Other members of your health care team may include a pharmacist, a dentist, an exercise physiologist, a cardiologist, a nephrologist (kidney specialist) and a neurologist.
Enjoy a long and healthy life with diabetes!
The escape room experience taught the participants that “taking care of your risk for and/or managing diabetes is important to help you take care of your heart. Just like you’re planning to escape this room, you can escape your risk of heart disease by working with a team. Work with your physician and create your own health care team to help manage your blood pressure and cholesterol and/or diabetes to keep your heart and blood vessels healthy.”

Behind the scenes of the Broadcast:I am thrilled that this podcast is one of our highest rated of the year! I spent more hours researching, writing and editing this mystery podcast than the previous four mystery podcasts combined. Since a physical injury prevented me from having much of a social life, I had no excuses but to write. My daily mantra: “if you can’t have an active body then, at least have an active mind” helped me when I was dealing with another physical setback.

Behind the scenes of the Broadcast:After we finished the live broadcast of our Annual Luther Tribute podcast in 2017, I thought it would be great to bring a tribute podcast to life! I wanted to connect the fans with Luther’s vocalists, musicians, friends and family members to celebrate his legacy. That’s how our 4 day celebration entitled Fandross was born. Fandross 2018 featured four wonderful events in New York City including a Live Tribute Concert at Ashford & Simpson’s Sugar Bar, Lisa Fischer & Grand Baton in concert at the Blue Note, a Luther Film & Video Presentation and Panel Discussion at SVA Theater and a Luther-themed Brunch, Fashion Show & Dress Auction with Runway the Realway. It was a magical experience to hear Luther’s music performed live by his musicians and vocalists. Just thinking about it gives me goosebumps.

Behind the scenes of the Broadcast:I can’t always personally pick the CDs we play on our podcasts. Sometimes the artists and/or albums I want are not available in the SONY catalogue or as in this case, I featured music that SONY recommended. As a P!nk fan, I was welcomed their suggestion. Over the years I’ve come to realized just how big a role the music plays in our monthly podcast. It creates a theme, reinforces a key message, adds excitement to our games and leaves the listener with a beautiful final thought. Several of P!nk’s songs “Beautiful Trauma,” “What About Us” and “Better Life” inspired me to tackle the topics discussed on this podcast. I usually listen to an album about 20 times prior to producing the podcast. I listen to it while I’m developing the show, choosing and booking guests, researching topics and coming up with game ideas. Then, I listen to it one more time about an hour before we broadcast to get in the right frame of mind.

Chef Robert “The Happy Diabetic” Lewis, who is living with type 2 diabetes, has made it his goal is to live happy and healthy and to create recipes that celebrate great-tasting food that both diabetics and non-diabetics can enjoy. His cookbooks are filled with tips, tidbits and humorous anecdotes that he hopes will make cooking fun! Below is one of our favorites:
“Happy and Healthy sloppy style joes made with simple ingredients and ground turkey. Can you feel the love?”, says Chef Robert Lewis.
What’s In It?
2 pounds ground turkey
2 cups tomato sauce (low sodium)
1 can tomato paste
1 Tablespoons garlic powder
¼ teaspoon Mrs. Dash Table Blend Salt
¼ Tablespoons chili powder
2.5 Tablespoons honey or maple syrup
1 16 oz can diced tomatoes, drained (optional I like to reserve the juice incase I want or need to thin down the sauce)
Let’s Put It Together:
In a large sauce pan, brown ground turkey over medium heat until completely cooked.
Stir in all ingredients. Once mixed, heat on low for an additional 10-15 minutes.

In a recent profile on the Everyday Diabetes website, Chef Robert Lewis admitted that he feared the worst for his own love of great food following his diagnosis with Type 2 Diabetes in 1998.
“I suspected that my days of good eating were over,” Lewis writes on his blog. “Yet, as I worked through my ups and downs, I came to realize that the selection of foods I could and should eat was vast and included many of my favorites. This motivated me to attempt to create delicious, diabetic-friendly dishes that were also easy to prepare.
Today he’s a man on the go! is a man on the go. When he’s not working as a director of training for 60 restaurants in the Midwest, he’s traveling around the country as a keynote speaker for Taking Control of Your Diabetes and/or hosting his own podcast, ‘The Happy Diabetic Kitchen Podcast’! Millions of Americans were glued to their screens watching the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing featuring Christine Blasey Ford‘s testimony about her alleged sexual assault by Judge Brett Kavanaugh.
During the hearing Professor Ford kept a bottle of Coca-Cola close at hand, occasionally taking a drink as she answered questions. The marketing value to Coca-Cola was over $3 million in product placement according to some estimates. To be clear, how much Coca-Cola’s margins were affected is certainly not the main question anyone should take away from this truly harrowing event.
However this overt product placement caught our attention because we’re discussing about hidden sugars in popular food and drinks on October’s Diabetes Late Nite podcast with Sugar Savvy SolutionAuthor Kathie Dolgin aid ‘High Voltage’ and Energy Up! organization board member, Stephanie MacKendree.
Americans consumption of sugar is reaching alarming statistics. Currently Americans eat about 20 teaspoons of sugar a day according to a report from the 2005–10 NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) database. Average daily consumption for men: 335 calories, women: 230 calories, boys: 362 calories, girls: 282 calories. That translates into about 66 pounds of added sugar consumed each year, per person.
This is why the American Heart Association put together a maximum intake allowance for sugar. According to the American Heart Association, women should have no more than 6 teaspoons per day, which is 25 grams of sugar or 100 calories from sugar. As a man, you can have up to 9 teaspoons of sugar daily, or 38 grams of sugar, which is around 150 calories from sugar. No matter your gender, a single 12-ounce can of Coke goes over the maximum sugar allowance for the day.
Coke is incredibly rich in sugar and doesn’t offer you any vitamins, minerals or fiber. If you’re like me and you enjoy that fizzy feeling in your mouth then consider swapping out every other can of Coke for a soda water. As you adjust to the taste, eventually you might consider drinking soda water in place of Coke all the time according the LiveStrong website.
Of course if you need your caffeine kick, have yourself a glass of unsweetened iced tea, hot herbal tea or even black coffee. You’ll get your caffeine without all the added sugar.
