Fatherhood After 40? It’s Becoming A Lot More Common

In the U.S., the average age a woman gives birth to her first child has been rising. And, a study published Thursday in Human Reproduction shows dads are getting older, too.

Of the roughly 4 million births each year in the U.S., about 9 percent of fathers are over 40. And “about 40,000 newborns have a father over the age of 50,” says Michael Eisenberg, an assistant professor of urology at Stanford University Medical Center and the senior author of the study. “This surprised me,” Eisenberg told us. READ MORE

Remembering Princess Diana on the 20th Anniversary of Her Death

It may be an exaggeration to say that Princess Diana saved the monarchy. But it’s still fair to say the wildly popular “people’s princess” did buy the royal family some time.

In her short life, she rattled the emotionally reserved monarchy. She shook the hands of AIDS patients. She spilled the beans on her soap opera marriage and talked to the press about her battle with bulimia. She pursued — and was pursued by — the celebrity-obsessed media. She was one of the most famous people in the world, and the British public loved her. They still do.

“She’s still the people’s princess,” ran a front-page headline in the Sun on Thursday. READ MORE

The Decadent Diabetic’s ‘I Love Lucy’ Inspired Carrots Recipe for Divabetic Labor Day Celebration

Don’t let the end of Summer get you down, get DIVA! Our Divabetic Go Ginger! Labor Day Celebration spotlights different ‘ginger’ recipes  by our good friend, Chef Ward Alper aka ‘The Decadent Diabetic’ to help put a kick in your 3 day weekend.

This fabulous ginger side dish recipe is inspired by one our favorite redheads, the iconic Lucille Ball.  Her TV show, “I Love Lucy” pretty much invented the TV sitcom as we know it.

Did you know that before the show’s 1951 debut, sitcoms on the new medium of television were essentially filmed half-hour plays, with fairly static cameras and minimalist sets?

But on “I Love Lucy” there were three cameras shooting simultaneously from different angles, on 35mm film, so that scenes could be performed in sequence, just once, with shots and reaction shots edited together later.

‘Lucy Ricardo’ was kind of a comedic superheroine, capable of doing just about anything, but only for a few minutes, before her efforts inevitably went catastrophically awry. Behind the camera, Lucille Ball was a heroine, too, blazing a path for TV performers and producers for which she’s never received proper credit. Both fiery redheads — the restless housewife and the woman who created her — managed to create an indestructible sitcom; not even colorization can mar it. READ MORE

Summer lasts a little longer with a tropical flower centerpiece (see above) for Divabetic Labor Day-inspired party and is surprisingly simple to create. An easy trick of the trade for centerpieces is to use multiples of like objects, vases or even lanterns and repeat- either down a long table or clustered symmetrically in the center of a table. The consistency creates a bold visual impact. To add a little more reflection and drama to the basic neutral table cloth place square mirror tiles to cover the tabletop (An easy to remove self adhesive helped keep the mirrors secure to the tablecloth).

How Are Baby Carrots Made?

The carrots now used to make “baby-cut carrots” are typically ones that have been specially bred to contain more sugar than their standard-sized cousins, because this extra sweetness appeals more strongly to children according to Snopes.com. Likewise, their bright orange color has also been bred into them, as has the evenness of that color all the way through the root. READ MORE

Go Ginger! for Divabetic Labor Day Celebration

Don’t let the end of Summer get you down, get DIVA! Our Divabetic Go Ginger! Labor Day Celebration spotlights different recipes featuring ginger by Chef Ward Alper aka ‘The Decadent Diabetic’s  to help put a kick in your 3 day weekend.

Did you know that ginger is among the healthiest (and most delicious) spices on the planet?  It is loaded with nutrients and bioactive compounds that have powerful benefits for your body and brain.

Ginger has a long history of use as a nausea remedy for seasickness and morning sickness related to pregnancy. According to a review of 12 studies that included a total of 1,278 pregnant women, 1.1-1.5 grams of ginger can significantly reduce symptoms of nausea.

Now, it looks like the spice can lower blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes, according to a new study by researchers from Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences in Yazd, Iran.

“Ginger can increase the effects of blood thinners, so if you’re taking these drugs, don’t take ginger,” advises Martha Howard, MD, medical director of Wellness Associates of Chicago. READ MORE Make sure to tell your doctor that you’re adding ginger to your regimen, and monitor your blood sugar levels regularly.

Our good friend, Chef Ward Alper aka ‘the Decadent Diabetic’ who is living with type 2 diabetes, helps us craft a menu with a redheaded spin for our Divabetic Labor Day Celebration. We’re partnering his recipes with our favorite red heads starting with Tina Louise who played  ‘Ginger’ on the 1960’s TV series “Gilligan’s Island.” .

Va va voom!  Tina Louise, aka, Ginger Grant While the show didn’t receive accolades at the time and was viewed by critics as a silly, slapstick comedy, it became a cultural icon which is still in syndication today.

Tina caught the eye of Hollywood execs and after actress and sex symbol, Jayne Mansfield turned down the role of the ‘movie star’ on a sitcom. Although probably the least prestigious of jobs, playing Ginger is what Tina Louise is best known for – like it or not. The role did make Louise a pop icon of the era, and in 2005 an episode of TV Land Top Ten ranked her as second only to Heather Locklear as the greatest of television’s all-time sex symbols.

She has a bevy of acting credentials including Broadway, television and movies, and also studied at some of the most prestigious acting schools including the Actors Studio and with the one and only Lee Strasberg. She has starred in movies with the likes of Brad Pitt, Lee Marvin, Katherine Ross and Miou-Miou, to name a few. She has continued to expand her wings including voiceovers for a gaming machine (MegaJackpot product), recorded an album (“It’s Time for Tina”)and has written several books. Wow, an impressive woman!

The question “Ginger or Mary Ann?” is regarded to be a classic pop-psychological question when given to American men of a certain age as an insight into their characters, or at least their desires as regarding certain female stereotypes.

Chef Ward thinks his Grilled Tuna with Ginger would be the perfect dish for Ginger Grant to prepare on the beach for the Professor!

Grilled Tuna With Ginger

The Decadent Diabetic’s Grilled Tuna with Ginger

Carbohydrates per serving 0g.

Chefs Note: This is a fast and simple recipe for tuna. It works equally well with frozen(and defrosted) tuna as it does with “fresh” tuna. It also works well with swordfish. I like MY fish (heresy, I know) on the drier side but I have included instructions for a rare preparation as well.

INGREDIENTS

1 4-5 ounce piece of the best tuna (sushi grade) you can find

pepper to taste

Zest of ½ lemon

2 tsp. Soy sauce

½ tsp. garlic, grated or minced

½ tsp. fresh dill, chopped

½ tsp. fresh parsley, chopped

½ tsp. ground ginger

1tsp. olive oil

Juice of ½ lemon

HOW TO PREPARE THE RECIPE:

Preheat Grill

Combine all of the ingredients EXCEPT the lemon juice and coat the piece of tuna. Refrigerate for 30 minutes or up to 4 hours (this can be done on a still frozen piece of tuna as it defrosts). Add the lemon juice just before cooking.

Heat the grill to medium high. Pat the tuna dry and place tuna steak onto the grill and cook on each side.

For rare- Cook on the grill 3 minutes per side

For medium- Cook on the grill for 4 minutes per side

For medium well- Cook on the grill for 4-5 minutes per side

Cook the marinade in a skillet until it starts to boil. Spoon over the fish.

Why Can’t You Wear White After Labor Day?

While no one is completely sure exactly when or why this fashion rule came into effect, our best guess is that it had to do with snobbery in the late 1800s and early 1900s. By the 1880s, in order to tell who was acceptable and who wasn’t, the women who were already “in” felt it necessary to create dozens of fashion rules that everyone in the know had to follow. That way, if a woman showed up at the opera in a dress that cost more than most Americans made in a year, but it had the wrong sleeve length, other women would know not to give her the time of day. Make Taco Tuesdays Healthy! with The Happy Diabetic

Who doesn’t love Taco Tuesdays?

All of sudden the day after Monday, Tuesday, doesn’t seem so bad.  I think ‘tacos’ might be to blame for why Tuesdays have become a highpoint in our culinary week. This popular culinary trend, Taco Tuesdays,  took off in Southern California and quickly spread to many big cities across the nation.Taco Tuesday is similar to Happy Hour in that restaurants vary in their participation, hours, and specials offered.

Taco Tuesdays can be part of a healthy diet plan, if done right.

Hoisin Shrimp Tacos by the Happy Diabetic

What’s in it?

5 tsp. Hoisin Sauce

1 tbsp. soy sauce

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 lb. shrimp, tails removed, peeled and deveined

1/2 tsp. olive oil

2 limes

kosher salt

2 c. shredded white cabbage

1/4 c. fresh chopped cilantro

WHAT’S THAT?: Hoisin sauce is a thick, pungent sauce commonly used in Chinese cuisine as a glaze for meat, an addition to stir fries, or as dipping sauce. It is darkly colored in appearance and sweet and salty in taste. Peking-style hoisin sauce ingredients include starches such as sweet potato, wheat or rice, and water, sugar, soybeans, sesame seeds, white distilled vinegar, salt, garlic, red chili peppers, and sometimes preservatives or coloring agents. Traditionally, hoisin sauce is made using toasted mashed soy beans.

Let’s put it together!

  1. In a large mixing bowl stir together 3 teaspoons Hoisin, soy sauce, and garlic; add shrimp and mix until well coated. Set aside to marinate.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, combine 2 tsp hoisin, and zest and juice of one lime, mix together with cabbage and cilantro; set aside.
  3. In a large skillet over medium-high heat or cook on the grill, heat the oil. Drain shrimp and pat dry; discard marinade. Sear shrimp until slightly caramelized, then flip. Cook until shrimp are firm, about 3 minutes and remove from the heat.
  4. Wrap the tortillas in foil and bake for about 8 minutes, until they are softened and heated through.
  5. Assemble tacos with a handful of cabbage slaw and a few pieces of shrimp. Cut  garnish with the remaining lime cut into wedges and serve immediately.

After losing her engagement ring on her family farm more than a decade ago, Canadian Mary Grams resigned herself to the idea she would never see it again reports the Guardian.

That is, until the diamond ring showed up this week – 13 years after she lost it –wrapped tightly around a misshapen carrot that had been freshly plucked from the garden.

The 84-year-old said she likely lost the ring as she was pulling a large weed from her farm in central Alberta in 2004, prompting a frantic search. “We looked high and low on our hands and knees … we couldn’t find it. I thought for sure either they rototilled it or something happened to it,” she told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. “I cried so many times.” READ MORE

Start a ‘SUGAR LIPS’ Log to Help You Manage Your Diabetes

Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but lipstick runs a close second. Why not incorporate your diabetes self-care into your daily beauty routine?

Don’t let diabetes dim your dazzle!

I truly believe that you have to love yourself enough to want to improve your diabetes health. Since 90% of women feel that wearing lipstick makes them feel better about themselves, why not reward yourself before you check your blood sugars by adding some color to your lips? The little boost of confidence you gain from your favorite shade  can help you to cope with those unexpected readings too.

15 MINUTE Beauty‘s Best Splurge Red Lipsticks: Mac’s Ruby Woo is one their best selling reds for a good reason!  It’s a classic bright red that works for almost everyone. BUY IT

If you’ve struggled in the past with adding your diabetes self-care into your daily routine then a SUGAR LIPS log  just might be the answer. Experts agree that linking my new habit with a current behavior make it much easier to change. No need to be motivated. No need to remember.

One good example of this concept is creating a new habit of flossing by always doing it after brushing your teeth. The act of brushing your teeth is something that you already do and that acts as the reminder to do your new behavior. READ MORE

When you stop and think that most women apply their lipstick 4 or more times in one day the resulting SUGAR LIPS log data could prove to extremely beneficial to you and your doctor. If you try it, I bet you will both be smiling! And guess what? A new tube of lipstick is a healthy way to reward yourself for lowering your A1C.

15 MINUTE Beauty‘s Best Splurge Red Lipsticks: Chanel Rouge Allure in Pirate is a classic red shade with a lot of blue mixed in, and the red isn’t too bright. It’s a go to for many women! BUY IT

How to Keep A SUGAR LIPS Log

Write down your blood sugar values after each application of lipstick throughout your day.  Jot down the time of day, your medication, and any changes in food, activity, illness and/or stress related to your blood sugars.  Keep in mind when checking your blood sugar that the important thing is to know how to interpret the numbers and take the necessary action. For example, if you take insulin and your blood sugar is high, you may need to bolus, or take more rapid-acting insulin, to bring your levels down into range. If you manage your Type 2 diabetes with diet and exercise, you might treat high blood sugar with a walk around the block.

Now imagine how good you’ll feel at your next doctor’s visit when you take out your SUGAR LIPS logbook filled with pages of blood sugar readings!

BEAUTY TIP: Extend the life of your lipstick application by setting your lips reports Bustle. Blotting helps press color into the lips, but if you really want your lipstick to stay put, hold a single ply of tissue over your lips, and dust a setting powder on top.

Face Your Diagnosis Like A Diva!

Unlike some other diseases that rely primarily on professional medical treatment, diabetes treatment requires active participation by the person who has it. You have to have ATTITUDE!! Monitoring your blood sugar level on a regular basis and analyzing the results is believed by many to be a crucial part of the treatment equation.

Self-monitoring is an integral part of diabetes management because it puts you in charge. Regardless of how you manage your diabetes — through diet and exercise alone or combined with oral medicines or insulin — regular blood sugar monitoring provides immediate feedback on how your program is working.

“Checking your blood glucose gives you the freedom to make choices without worry, the confidence to learn from your actions, and the motivation to keep striving to do better,” says Linda Dale, RN, BA, CDE, Clinical Nurse Specialist in the Outpatient Diabetes Education Program at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Diabetes Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan as reported by Diabetes Self-Management. “Monitoring tells you that what you’re doing either is working or isn’t, and it serves as motivation to keep up actions that are working or to make changes.” READ MORE

15 MINUTE Beauty‘s Best Splurge Red Lipsticks: Tom Ford’s Lip Color in Cheery Lush  is on the pinker end of the red spectrum and is fairly bright.  It’s a statement lip color best paired with minimal makeup.  BUY IT

DIVABETIC TIP: You should wait to check your blood sugars if you usually reapply your lipstick after eating or drinking. Most of the food you consume will be digested and raises blood glucose in one to two hours. To capture the peak level of your blood glucose, it is best to test one to two hours after you start eating. The American Diabetes Association recommends a target of below 180 mg/dl two hours after a meal.

Do you feel like you self-sabotage your best efforts? Use “But” – According to LIfeHac, when you start to think negative thoughts, you should use the word “but” to interrupt bad thought patterns. “I’m no good at this, but, if I work at it I might get better later.” READ MORE

BEAUTY TIP: Lip liner can be a game-changer for a few reasons reports Bustle. The first is that it keeps lipstick from bleeding outside the lines of your lips. By applying it all over the lips, it can also help make your lipstick last longer by giving it something to stick to. Lastly, if you want to up your lip game, using a liner that is slightly (and I mean slightly) darker than your lipstick can give flattering dimension to the lips.

Divabetic Summertime Favorites & Diabetes Advice

‘Walking on Sunshine’ during the dog days of Summer for people living with diabetes may require a few special precautions  for you to shine.

Extreme heat is a stress on the body, and any stress can release hormones that will raise blood sugar levels, says Deena Adimoolam, MD, assistant professor of medicine, endocrinology, diabetes, and bone disease at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.

If you find it’s too hot and your blood sugar is fluctuating, stay inside where it’s cool. That may mean a trip to the spa, mall or the movie theater if your home isn’t air-conditioned.

“People with chronic diseases like diabetes as well as people taking certain medications, including heart disease medications and diuretics, which are often used to treat complications of diabetes, are at increased risk of experiencing difficulties in the heat, even though they may not be aware of it,” says Catherine Carver, M.S., A.N.P., C.D.E, Director of Educational Services at Joslin Clinic.

Come summer, you may be tempted to don flip-flops or sandals or even walk barefoot. But it’s important that you protect your feet when you have diabetes. “My suggestion is to find some really comfortable footwear that is breathable,”said Joanne Rinker, MS, RD, CDE, LDN, senior director for community health improvement for Population Health Improvement Partners in North Carolina and a spokesperson for the American Association of Diabetes Educators as reported in Everyday Health. Fashion Designers Dolce&Gabbana teamed up with Smeg to design a eye catching line of toasters, citrus juicers, coffee machines, kettles, blenders, stand mixers and slow juicers. All these products are decorated with reflective interpretations of Sicilian folklore. Lemons, prickly pears, and bright red cherries are just a selection of Sicilian decorations that are framed in triangular motifs known as crocchi, that decorate these small appliances. Together with crocchi, the appliances are covered in delicate floral motifs and images of the enthralling Mount Etna, surrounded by ornamental friezes, and decorative acanthus leaves. All these themes and decorative symbols are intrinsically tied to Sicily and the important aspects of the aesthetic of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana.

DIVABETIC SUMMERTIME TIP: Exercise early or late. The hottest and sunniest part of the day is between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Schedule your outdoor exercise before or after these hours when it’s not so hot.

The Happy Diabetic’s Healthy Hot Dog Topping Recipes

Chef Robert aka ‘The Happy Diabetic’ takes part in our fourth annual Mr. Divabetic Mystery podcast: Gypsies, Tramps & Peas scheduled for Tuesday, September 12, 2017. This year’s diabetes mystery takes place in Coney Island, the home of Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest. Joey “Jaws” Chestnut captured his 10th Mustard Belt by eating an event-record 72 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes to win.

To get you in the spirit of ‘Gypsies, Tramps & Peas’ we asked Chef Robert to share some recipes for healthy hot toppings to help you ‘makeover’ your hot dog.

“Okay, let be honest the All American Hot dog get’s a bad rap!,” says Chef Robert Lewis. “It’s nutritional reputation is horrible. The average hot dog actually beats out a basic hamburger patty by about 100 calories assuming it’s not a foot long. After all, who really needs to eat a foot of food anyway!”

Chef Robert Lewis recommends choosing organic, grass-fed, and/or kosher all beef wieners, which tend to have less sodium. Aim for less than 200 calories, 5g sat fat, and 400 mg sodium.

Don’t worry, if you’re feeling angry with Chef Robert for taking the fun out of grilling because he’s got loads of surefire ways to make sure your dogs are the ‘top dogs’ at your next cookout.

After all, he was diagnosed in 1998 with type 2 diabetes. “Much of what I heard in those early day was about the foods that were prohibited,” says Chef Robert Lewis.  “I suspected that my days of good eating were over, yet as I worked through my ups and downs, I came to realize that the selection of foods I could and should eat was vast and included many of my favorites. This motivated me to attempt to create delicious, diabetic-friendly dishes that were also easy to prepare.”

The Happy Diabetic Fixin’s Tip: Replace relish, which is loaded with sodium, with shredded cucumbers. Cucumbers are low in calories and provide a healthy dose of fiber, vitamin C and potassium.
