Divabetic superstar Chaka Khan has released a new song, Woman Like Me. We hope it’s just as successful as her healthy lifestyle makeover after her diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.
Her new empowering track, Woman Like Me, hints at an earlier classic, I’m Every Woman, which she made famous but with a sharper edge.
A lot of people know about Chaka Khan’s life of excess. The star almost died mixing sleeping pills and cocaine once. She suffered from alcohol addiction until the early 2000s, after which she became sober, but after an injury, she became addicted to painkillers. However, she has been trying to stay clean since 2013 and said, “I call myself an ex-addict.
But not many people know that the star is living with type 2 diabetes. The Queen of Funk’s granddaughter sparked her adopting healthy habits
“I adopted my 10-year-old granddaughter. I have to be there for her. I knew I couldn’t go out like this so I just fasted for, like, a month, then I went vegan and went off meats and all dairy and anything with eyes. If I have a craving for a little baked fish or something, I might eat it. But that’s about it. I’ve mostly been doing a lot of high-protein foods and a lot of vegetables.”
Chaka Khan admits, “I don’t like exercising at all. I guess if I had one (exercise) of choice, it would be walking. I do not run, and I’m losing, like, on average, about five pounds a month. I’ve lost 60 pounds.”
Slimmed-down superstar diva Chaka Khan is inspiring this episode of Divabetic’s monthly podcast. Mr. Divabetic’s guests including Chaka Khan’s former bandmember and producer, Ivan Hampden, Jr.,Patricia Addie-Gentle RN, CDCES, Pam Butler MS, CDCES, Constance Brown-Riggs MSEd, RD, CDCES, CDN, Holly Clegg who is the author of six cookbooks including ‘Kitchen 101’Mama Rose Marie and real-life diva, Ginger Vieira, who is the author of ‘Your Diabetes Science Experiment’ and record-setting competitive powerlifter living with type 1 diabetes.
”I’ve been living with type1diabetes for 57 years,” says diabetes advocate, mentor, and blogger FatCatAnna on August’s Divabetic’s podcast. “So I feel like a kid at heart.”
Anna shares what it was like to manage diabetes in the 1960s. “I started with one insulin injection a day. It was pork insulin called NPH.”
It might be hard to imagine that the first insulins developed were from animals. But over the last century, there have been several innovations in insulin therapy, starting with the isolation of insulin and the purification and concentration of animal pancreatic extracts.
The first commercial insulin formulations were made with animal insulins, primarily beef and pork insulins, which had PK and PD properties similar to human insulin. However, a common problem with animal-source insulins was the formation of anti-insulin antibodies, leading to lipoatrophy and insulin resistance in many patients. Processing techniques were developed to purify active insulin. By 2006, the manufacturing of pork insulin (Iletin II) for human use was discontinued.
Today’s insulins include insulin mixtures, concentrated insulins, and insulins with alternate routes of administration, providing a wide array of options for people with diabetes.
Not only have insulin formulations changed over the past fifty years but so has
diabetes self-care management. By the 1960s, the development of urine strips for detecting blood sugars and the single-use syringe allowed faster and easier insulin therapy options. This was still a far cry from today’s self-care tools. Specifically, the invention of the blood glucose monitor for home use, something we take for granted, was still several years away.
“Back then, I just did a jab in the morning,” says Anna. “Then, I had to eat like a soldier at 8 AM, 12 PM, little snacks in between, and so on.”
Fifty-seven years later, her curious mind keeps on top of all the new forms of insulin therapy and technology today.
“I like to learn all kinds of new and different things in technology,” she adds. “Now, I’m using a CGM (continuous glucose monitor). That’s a game-changer for anyone who is on insulin. The fact that gives you insight into what’s happening and warns you when you’re going high or going low helps you use your insulin properly.”

Additionally, we’re sharing an honest, no-filter look at the daily grind of living with diabetes and practical ways to help you pivot and stay positive. We encourage others with diabetes to live life to the fullest and apply Barry Manilow’s attitude to their daily lives.

The romantic drama “Purple Hearts,” streaming on Netflix, stars Sofia Carson as Cassie, a struggling singer-songwriter living with type 1 diabetes. She has to ration her insulin while working numerous jobs.
Her lack of access to healthcare sparks a desire to marry someone in the military to get quality health insurance. If that plotline seems a stretch, you’re probably not a fan of 90 Day Fiancé.
Once Cassie meets and marries a Marine, she quickly attains insulin, an insulin pump, and a continuous glucose monitor (CGM). This whirlwind romance also includes lightning-fast medical care.
Although “Purple Hearts” is a break-out hit with over more than 150 million viewing hours, some people have scorned the depiction of the lack of access to affordable insulin. To their credit, the actors and writers consulted with Laura Pavlakovich, founder of You’re Just My Type, and Dr. Michael Metzger, a medical consultant, to create an accurate depiction.
“I think we were all truly blown away by how all-encompassing having type 1 diabetes is”, Sofia Carson said in an interview with Beyond Type 1.
Earlier this year, Congress passed a law that would cap the monthly cost of insulin at $35 for the millions of Americans who rely on the drug.
The Affordable Insulin Now Act, which would take effect in 2023, would limit cost-sharing under private health insurance for a month’s supply of certain insulin products at $35, or 25 percent of a plan’s negotiated price, whichever is less.

As we prepare for the debut of Divabetic’s newest mystery podcast, Tomorrow Is Not On The Menu, scheduled for Tuesday, September 27, 2022, we’re re-releasing our past mystery podcasts.
One of my favorites is Divabetic Mysteries: Suspect Boulevard, loosely based on the iconic film Sunset Boulevard starring Gloria Swanson.
Suspect Boulevard’s plot involves dogs, dementia, diamonds, and diabetes and pits two celebrity sisters against each other. One sister is an actress, and the other is a best-selling author, similar to the real-life Collins sisters.
This special mystery theater production is loosely based on Billy Wilder’s film, Sunset Boulevard. Our cast includes Poet Lorraine Brooks, Patricia Addie-Gentle RN, CDCES, ‘We Are Diabetes’ organization founder, Asha Brown, Catherine Schuller AICI, CIP, Susan Weiner MS, RD, CDCES, CDN, Chef Robert Lewis, USA Today Best-Selling Author Tonya Kappes and Mama Rose Marie.
Throughout the podcast, we will spotlight the wonderful music by the National Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Charles Gerhardt, courtesy of SONY MUSIC.
The final scene is my absolute favorite. If you’re like me and grew up on primetime soap operas like Dynasty, Falcon Crest, and Dallas, you’re in for a treat! Our final scene has all the crazy twists and turns you’d expect from a sudsy melodrama. Enjoy!
Don’t forget to join us for Divabetic’s 9th Annual Mystery podcast!

Specifically, I saw about half of the 32 tables designed by artists living or working in the Bronx on display throughout the Garden. Below are some of my favorites.
Textile-Knit Artist Ruth Marshall‘s fine art textile table design stands out! It explores the creative possibilities of knotting. She accurately depicts various vegetables with her versatile, brightly colored nylon material (paracord and zip ties) on wood.
Artist Reina Mia Brill‘s design showcases different edible flowers. The artist used paper seed packets, acrylic paint, gel medium, and resin on wood. She is the recipient of a Bronx Council for the Arts Grant as well as a New York Foundation on the Arts Fellowship.
Of course, Santina Amato‘s Per La Mamma Mia table design effortlessly captured the love of my Italian heritage. Her red and white checkerboard acrylic paint design on wood made visiting the Home Gardening Center a must! The artist’s muse is bread dough and relates to her immigrant childhood, where the dough was no foreign matter. Her first memory and experience of femininity and the power of creation (and potentially female desire) were watching her mother knead this soft, white, voluptuous material on our kitchen table. Folding the dough over onto itself and pushing her whole body towards it, she transformed the ingredients of flour and water into a living organism, created for both our oral pleasure and life sustenance.
Artist Matthew López-Jensen‘s display, “Lamb’s Quarters: A Love Story,” most closely resembles Fine Artist Susan McCaslin‘s work for Divabetic’s Plate Poetry Project. Both displays’ use of words is similar.
Matthew López-Jensen’s original essay across the top of the table celebrates the connection between foraging, love, and queer identity (available in Spanish and English). He used text, stain, and acrylic paint on wood for “Lamb’s Quarters: A Love Story.”
Plate Poetry Project depicted people’s conversations while eating on dishware at a dinner table. Visitors were encouraged to interact with the table and take apart the place settings to read each statement.
Eating is such a central part of our diabetes lives that food becomes associated with almost everything we do. We eat if we’re happy, sad, angry, celebrating, grieving, lonely, or bored. Emotions become connected with food. When you eat based on your emotions, it can hinder your diabetes wellness management.
Susan‘s display, “What Words Do You Bring To The Table?” depicts the different thoughts and emotions related to eating.
Divabetic’s Plate Poetry “What’s On Your Plate?” workshops focus on the emotions related to eating for people at risk, affected by and living with diabetes. Our Plate Poetry Project video testimonials aim to assess the emotions associated with managing diabetes and the underlying reasons attributed to those emotions.
Watch this video to find out more about the artists participating in the Around The Table: Stories Of The Food We Love exhibit.
. Each one-of-a-kind table will celebrate the cultural and historical significance of crops and plant-based food traditions—and encourage sitting, sharing, and storytelling.

Rain comes.
The rivers overflow and flood the plains.
Our hearts become full
And sometimes anguish and fear is what remains.
Hearts ache
Hands and bodies fail or become weak
Powerless and fearful
Relief and painless thoughts are what we seek.
Minds change
And overwhelming feelings turn to fear
It can feel hopeless
We don’t know what to do or how to bear.
But
The rain does stop
And the sun comes out.
And whatever it is you’re upset about
You work it through and find a way
And just as Manilow would say…
You made it through the rain
And kept your point of view.
You learned to deal with hurt and pain
And find a pathway through.
You learned that even on bad days
The sun’s behind the clouds
And even in life’s alleyways
That you can beat the odds.
So buckle up and buckle down
Do what you need to do
And in the words of Barry M
We can’t smile without YOU.

As part of my research for August’s podcast, I went to see Barry Manilow perform at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. It’s a hard job, but someone’s got to do it!! He’s an incredible entertainer. What I loved most was how comfortable Barry Manilow is in his skin. He thoroughly enjoyed performing the songs he’s performed over a thousand times for his devoted ‘Fanilow’ fans like it was the first time!
We encourage others with diabetes to live life to the fullest and apply Barry Manilow‘s attitude to their daily lives.

On Divabetic’s March podcast, we’re talking about how language impacts people’s confidence to manage their diabetes self-care with musical inspiration from Prince. Tune in with the link.
Words can elevate or destroy someone’s perception of themselves and their health.
Our musical inspiration chose to be identified as the infamous “Love Symbol” rather than a word for many years. He wrote: “It’s all about thinking in new ways, tuning in 2 a new free-quency.”
Could using symbols rather than words, like Prince, help you manage your diabetes wellness?
Unfortunately, much of the language around diabetes has been focused on adverse outcomes and complications and laden with judgment and blame without considering individual needs, beliefs, and choices.
Some enlightened health professionals, like our friend, Susan WeinerMS, RDN, CDCES, FADCES choose to encourage and use collaborative messages to enhance a person’s health outcomes. “How we collaborate with people with diabetes plays an important role in treatment outcomes and the psychosocial well-being of the individuals,” says Susan.
“As health care professionals, we often want to “fix” problems and forget to “listen” to the person with the lived experience. Rather than overwhelming a person with information, she says it’s vital to listen to what is most important to an individual and discuss that issue at the beginning of the appointment or conversation. “For example, if someone is concerned that they can’t afford their medication, they will not be ready to listen to information about nutrition or physical activity. Collaboration and active listening on the part of a clinician is essential to help build a good rapport and help reduce stress for a person living with diabetes.“
We encourage you to show yourself some love!

I’d like to acknowledge the generosity of my friend and Divabetic supporter, Arhel Neville!
Arthel is helping me shower the cast and crew of Divabetic’s upcoming Mystery podcast: “Tomorrow Is Not On The Menu” with gratitude by supplying everyone with beautiful Arthel Neville Design™ handbags. Her generous heart is one of the many reasons I love her so much!
“As a mentor, I’ve always been looked upon for words of encouragement. As a result, I’ve adopted sisters of all ages across the globe,” says Arthel. “I find inspiration in inspiring others, and I’m all about female empowerment. These words of affirmation made it onto her new accessories collection, as they serve as a personal reminder of proud accomplishments and doors Arthel dares to continue to open. By accessorizing with Arthel Neville Design™, she wishes her original quotes will encourage and inspire ‘girls’ of all stripes.
I met Arthel almost twenty years ago when I took a brief break working for Luther Vandross to go on a European Tour with Lionel Richie. I’m still unsure how I convinced Luther to let me have three weeks off. Arthel visited her fiance and future husband, the talented Taku Hirano. Taku played percussion in Lionel’s band under the music direction of Chuckii Booker. Arthel and I became fast friends. A few years later, she graciously agreed to be our celebrity co-host at two Divabetic – Makeover Your Diabetes outreach programs in her hometown, New Orleans.
Earlier this year, Arthel offered her beautiful tote bags as prize giveaways at Divabetic’s Mother’s Day-themed Baking Party featuring the Diabetic Pastry Chef on Zoom. Our next Baking Party is scheduled for Wednesday, September 28, 2022, at 7 PM EST. Click HERE to register.
