How To Pick Corn

Corn is a starchy vegetable high in fiber, vitamins, and minerals and relatively low in fat and protein. A medium ear of sweet corn or half a cup of kernels contains 77-100 calories and 15 grams of carbohydrates. How do you choose corn?

Experts advise looking at the silks, or “silky hair,” at the top of the cob to determine if it’s fresh: Corn silks should be golden brown and slightly moist, almost tacky. When corn is pollinated, the silks will dry up, turn brownish, and fall off. If the silks are dark, curled up, and falling out, it indicates that pollination has occurred. The kernels may remain unfertilized if the silks are still yellow-green and growing.

Corn begins to turn its sugar into starch as soon as it’s picked, and the process accelerates over time. Less sugar means the corn is less sweet and tender.

Harlem Heaven’s Hats Joins our Luther Vandross Celebration in NYC

“When I listen to Luther Vandross’ music, It makes me happy. I want to sing along and move to the beat. I want to snap my fingers and stomp my feet. There is joy in his music,” says Evetta Petty, the owner and designer of Harlem Heaven’s Hats.

Evetta will be joining us at our upcoming Luther Vandross: “Never Too Much” birthday celebration featuring a Music Panel, Fashion Show, Live Performances, Style Vendors, and Live DJ on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at Thread Lounge at the Renaissance Hotel in NY, NY.

Evetta and Divabetic partnered on a successful faith-based diabetes outreach program, Hat Boxing. At these events, we challenged women at risk, affected by, and living with diabetes to design hat boxes with educational, motivational, and encouraging messages about managing their diabetes health. Our main focus was raising awareness of the link between mismanaged diabetes and stroke.

In 2003, before the release of “Dance With My Father,” my boss, Luther Vandross, suffered a debilitating stroke due to mismanaged type 2 diabetes. Please learn how to keep your house a home by learning to prevent a stroke from occurring. If someone you know is experiencing a store, don’t wait to take action. Once a stroke strikes, every minute counts. BE FAST is a simple way to remember the signs of a stroke. BE FAST stands for balance, eyes, face, arm, speech, and time.

Strokes don’t automatically result in long-term impairment. A clot-busting drug, known as tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), can be given intravenously to people having a stroke. The drug can shrink the size of the clot, allowing blood to flow back to the brain. The key is calling 911 when you recognize a loved one is experiencing a stroke.

My boss, Luther Vandross, was known for wearing rhinestones, silk tuxedos, and tailcoats on stage and Versace, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, and Tom Ford off-stage! He wore bright colors, animal prints, geometric patterns, and fringes, which  Evetta Petty appreciated.

“When I design hats, I want them to make the customer happy. I am dressing people for important events in their life. I want them to smile when they see the hats and look great in them. I want my hats to evoke that same joy that I feel from Luthers’ music, ” says Evetta Petty. Harlem Heaven’s Hats have been featured in VOGUE, ELLE, CNN, the NY Times, and the World-Renowned Kentucky Derby and Royal Ascot. She will participate in our Fashion Show at the Luther Vandross Never Too Much Birthday Celebration on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at Thread Lounge in New York City.

Join us when we celebrate the Glitz, Glamour, and Romantic Elegance that made Luther’s music and concerts memorable and set him apart from other entertainers.

Barry White’s History of Hypertension

Ignoring high blood pressure can lead to serious health complications, as highlighted by the unfortunate story of Barry White.

He was twice admitted to the hospital after suffering from hypertension – once in 1995 and again in 1998. Before his passing in 2003, Barry White announced that he was on dialysis and searching for a kidney donor.

Over time, chronic high blood pressure can cause damage to the arteries around the kidneys, leading to kidney failure. The scary part is that many of us are unaware that we have high blood pressure because it often has no visible symptoms. Even those aware of their condition may not take the necessary steps to manage it properly.

It’s important to understand that high blood pressure puts a great deal of strain on the heart, and if left unaddressed, can increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other serious medical issues. The good news is that by taking steps such as managing stress, eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, quitting smoking, and reducing alcohol consumption, we can control our blood pressure and reduce the risk of developing complications.

So let’s prioritize our health and take action to manage our blood pressure before it’s too late.

Barry White’s unique vision delivered romantic soul music that seduced the world. Tell us how you feel about how love, intimacy and relationships affect your diabetes in our first-ever Love At All Stages Of Life Survey with Diabetes Sisters. We

Murder Plain As Vanilla: Cozy Mystery Podcast

Enjoy this excerpt from Divabetic’s 10th Annual Mystery podcast, Murder Plain As Vanilla, streaming on Spotify, iTunes, and BlogTalkRadio. In this excerpt, we discuss the dangers of Insulin rationing. Insulin rationing is when someone with diabetes is forced to cut back on their use of insulin due to the medication’s high costs as a short-term measure.

Sadly, new studies report that 1.3 million Americans are rationing insulin.

Insulin is “like oxygen” for people with type 1 diabetes. Those with type 1 diabetes who go without it can get very sick within hours or days and end up in the hospital with ketoacidosis, a potentially life-threatening complication. It can even be deadly. Those with type 2 diabetes who don’t have adequate insulin can have high blood sugar levels, putting them at risk for complications such as heart disease, blindness, and kidney failure.

T1International is a nonprofit organization that advocates for people with type 1 diabetes. It launched the insulin4all social media campaign and organized two high-profile protests outside Ely Lilly’s headquarters. Since its launch, the #insulin4all campaign has continued to raise awareness of the most pressing diabetes issues.

Here’s a short synopsis of Divabetic’s 10 Annual Mystery podcast, Murder Plan As Vanilla: When Mr. Divabetic’s arch-nemesis baking sensation Renata Whisk calls, offering a chance to participate in the Visions of Vanilla baking competition, he can’t refuse. It’s an invitation to compete against culinary giants Best-Selling Cookbook Author Lily Frost, Green Thumb Gourment, Hazel Honeywell, and the Cannoli Countess and, most importantly, a chance to pay back his debt owed to his mother.

But before Max’s hands touch flour, he discovers the dead body of the Vanilla King of Madagascar. As luck has it, Max is the last person to see the Vanilla King alive. To prove his innocence, he enlists his team, USA Today’s best-selling author Tonya Kappes, health educator MaryAnn Nicolay MEd, NDTR, and his mother, Mama Rose Marie.

This scene spotlights the misleading information provided on food labels. Specifically, we discuss the difference between ‘natural’ and ‘organic.’ Recent surveys indicate that consumers are willing to pay more for “natural” and “organic” labeled products with vaguely defined words.

The FDA has considered the term ‘natural’ to mean that nothing artificial or synthetic (including all color additives regardless of source) has been included in, or has been added to, a food that would not normally be expected to be in that food. However, the FDA does not consider whether the term ‘natural’ should describe any nutritional or other health benefit.

Sadly, natural products aren’t the only labels to go virtually unregulated. Terms like “lightly sweetened,” “made with real…,” and “multigrain” are also more a branding strategy than a substantive label, forcing shoppers to stay vigilant if they’re buying healthy foods.

Celebrated interior designers transform a luxury Manhattan home into an elegant exhibition of fine furnishings, art, and technology each year.  This event began in 1973 when several dedicated Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club supporters launched the Decorator Show House to raise critical funds for after-school and enrichment programs for New York City children. Over the decades, the project has become a must-see event for thousands of design enthusiasts and is renowned for sparking worldwide interior design trends.

Throughout our tour, enjoy Divabetic’s exclusive audio of wall-to-wall diabetes advice and conversations room-by-room to help you keep your house a home.

Start in our state-of-the-art kitchen and meet Jill Weisenberger RD, CDCES, who chats about how to make your food environment less stressful.

Outside stress triggers our drive for comfort food, including excess sugar-sweetened beverages and sweets such as baked goods.  At the same time, during stressful moments, we tend to lower our intake of whole foods, fruits, and vegetables.  This, in turn, leads to a higher risk of insulin resistance, excess visceral fat, and type 2 diabetes.

MaryAnn Nicolay talks about reading nutrition labels. One tip for people with diabetes or prediabetes is to focus on the total carbohydrates, dietary fiber, and calories to help reach your health goals.

Plus, before you, treat yourself to Paulette McWilliams’ soulful song, Mama’s Kitchen Table.

Gospel Singer Pat Lacy shares how she practices portion control. One option is to reduce your carbohydrate portion sizes and keep them to less than a quarter of your plate. Still hungry? Fill up on green vegetables and eat lean protein and healthy fats instead.

Foods high in good fats include vegetable oils (such as olive, canola, sunflower, soy, and corn), nuts, seeds, and fish.

Stroll through the spacious family room where Lorraine Brooks and Rachel Zinman get comfy on the sofa and talk about the feelings related to managing diabetes in today’s world.

Clarence Waldron tells how acting F.A.S.T. after experiencing a stroke was the key to his recovery.

Don’t leave before clicking on the LINK to share a free pre-diabetes test with our loved ones.

The Center for Disease Control offers a National Diabetes Prevention Program to help people with prediabetes make lasting lifestyle changes to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.

Relax in the luxurious spa-inspired bathroom, where you can pick up tips from beauty and style tips experts and find out how diabetes can affect your skin, hair, and teeth.

For instance, hair loss can be a symptom of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Experts believe it is caused by hormonal imbalances, poor circulation due to hyperglycemia, or an autoimmune disorder. Hair loss can often be reversed with medications and by tighter blood sugar management.

Falling can be a concern if you live with diabetes and have peripheral neuropathy or nerve damage (loss of sensation in the feet, legs, and hands), retinopathy (damaged blood vessels in the eyes), and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

Mama Rose Marie offers an easy tip for anyone afraid of falling in the shower.

Crawl into bed for some pillow talk on addressing and overcoming intimacy and sexual health concerns.

Even though people with diabetes are at a higher risk for sexual problems, a study in Diabetes Care found that only about half of all men with diabetes and 19 percent of women with diabetes have broached the topic with a doctor.

Dr. Janis Roszler PhD opens our eyes to what intimacy can mean for people affected by sexual health issues related to diabetes.

Many men with erectile dysfunction, for instance, later learn that they have diabetes. For people with diabetes, sexual problems can indicate nerve damage, blocked arteries, and even out-of-whack hormones.

Ambrice Miller founded Relic Interiors, a dealing company that curates incredible art, antiques, and beautifully handcrafted furniture. She gives a tour of her English countryside home.

Men and women experience low libido as a result of poorly managed diabetes. If your sex drive is stalled, look at your diabetes management and take steps to lower your blood glucose levels. Then, consider your medications. Certain drugs, such as antidepressants, can reduce sexual desire, so be sure to talk to your doctor.

Help Us Light the Way During National Diabetes Awareness Month (November)

Approximately 96 million American adults—more than 1 in 3—have prediabetes. Did you know that over 80% don’t know they have it? Prediabetes increases your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

This November, join Divabetic’s Blue Candle initiative and encourage your friends, co-workers, and family members to be screened for pre-diabetes. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) offers a quick, easy online Pre-Diabetes risk test.

Prediabetes Risk Test

Be by their side when they check, and share your experience of living well with diabetes so they can see that living well with diabetes is possible. Together, we can help others come out of the dark, address their diabetes health status, and start living their lives to the fullest.

Clarence Waldron talks about his stroke, recovery, working as Senior Editor and Writer of Jet Magazine, and his memories of Luther Vandross and Aretha Franklin.

Twenty years ago, Clarence interviewed Luther’s mother, Mrs. Mary Ida Vandross, for Jet Magazine after Luther suffered a stroke due to mismanaged type 2 diabetes.

Clarence’s story is an excellent reminder of why it’s essential to ACT F.A.S.T. if you or a loved one is experiencing a stroke. The acronym FAST (Facial drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulties, and Time) has been used by the National Stroke AssociationAmerican Heart Association, and others to educate the public on detecting stroke symptoms. Earlier treatment results in a greater chance of recovery, a reduced likelihood of permanent disability, and a lesser need for extensive rehabilitation.

You’ll quickly hear Clarence’s upbeat attitude and ferocious appetite for music and divas have served him well during his recovery. Throughout this podcast, we feature music from Aretha Franklin’s Get It Right album and Luther Vandross’s Live At Radio City Music Hall 2003 20th Anniversary Edition album courtesy of SONY Music.

How Much Sugar Is In Starbucks Apple Crisp Oatmilk Frappuccino?

Starbucks Apple Crisp Oatmilk Frappuccino combines apple, cinnamon, and brown sugar in your brew to taste apple pie filling.

You might assume you’re ordering something healthy because it contains oat milk, but think again: Apple Crisp Oatmilk Frappuccinos pack a big sugar punch!!

According to the Starbucks website,  a Grande size Apple Crisp Oatmilk Frappuccino contains 60 grams (or 15 teaspoons) of sugar. Additional nutrition information: Total Carbohydrates: 70 grams, Calories:420

Oat milk is a non-dairy milk alternative like soy and almond milk. An 8-ounce glass of oat milk contains 4 grams of protein compared to dairy milk, which has twice as much: 8 grams of protein in every 8-ounce glass.

But this grain-based milk is gluten-free, and many brands are free from the major allergens.

Oat milk and dairy milk also differ in carbohydrate content. Original varieties of oat milk can have up to 24 grams of carbohydrates per serving, while dairy milk has 12 grams.

Expert Tip: The American Diabetes Association recommends you look at the Total Carbohydrate instead of the Net Carbson the Nutrition Facts label. The total carbohydrate on the label includes all three types of carbohydrates: sugar, starch, and fiber.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends eating no more than 12.5 teaspoons of sugar daily, or about 50 grams (the same amount found in Starbucks’ super popular Grande Pumpkin Spice Latte and a 16 oz. bottle of Coke!).  You are having a day’s worth of sugar in one drink!

Limiting added sugar consumption to 10 percent of a person’s daily total calories is the idea. Americans get about 16 percent of their calories from added sugars on average.

How Much Added Sugar Are You Drinking?

America’s #1 Energy Conductor, Kathie Dolgin aka High Voltage, shows how much added sugar is in popular drinks in this video – it’s shocking!! 4.2 grams equals a teaspoon, but the nutrition facts round this number down to four grams. Using this equation, you can easily look at any drink to see how much sugar it contains.

We’re talking about ‘THE SWEETEST TABOO’ aka ‘SUGAR’ with musical inspiration from Sade on this episode of Divabetic’s podcast.

Guests include Patricia Addie-Gentle RN, CDCES, Tameka Milline, Catherine Schuller,  Kathy Dolgin aka ‘High Voltage’, and Stephanie MacKendree. Throughout the podcast, we play music from The Essential Sade album courtesy of SONY Music.

Over time, consistently taking in more sugar will lead to insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is when cells in your muscles, fat, and liver don’t respond well to insulin and can’t easily take up glucose from your blood, leading to prediabetes.

Prediabetes means your blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.

Weight Watchers Prescribing Weight Loss Drugs Like Ozempic

The news that WeightWatchers will be prescribing popular Weight Loss medications like Ozempic stinks. I wish they would admit counting points doesn’t work for everyone and apologize to those who spent their time, money, and self-worth trying to reach their goals via their program.

So many people who have been on WeightWatchers return to the program after leaving. They can’t sustain their results because counting points is unsustainable.

So now, WeightWatchers has decided to cash in on the mindset of a quick fix.

This is another example of WeightWatchers riding the newest trend to sell weight loss. In 2018, they tried unsuccessfully to adapt to a body-positive trend by rebranding to WW International. They replaced the word “diet” with “building healthy habits” and configured their messaging to highlight wellness goals instead of weight loss.

Of course, WeightWatchers is already fending off criticism for their new acquisition.

“We have no interest in prescribing medications to those who are trying to lose 10 pounds for a reunion,” WW’s chief scientific officer, Gary Foster, told the Wall Street Journal.

WeightWatchers stresses they added this tool to their arsenal to support customers who already use semaglutides like Ozempic and Wegovy and to help get these drugs into the hands of the patient population they were intended for: people managing diabetes and those looking to lose weight as part of a doctor-recommended health plan.

Weight Watchers bought Sequence, a telehealth operator that can prescribe medications under brand names, including Ozempic and Wegovy.

Ozempic is a once-weekly injection used to treat Type 2 diabetes. It’s not approved for weight loss, but people taking it tend to lose weight.  Wegovy is a higher-dose version of Ozempic specifically approved for weight loss.

If interested, you will pay separately for your WeightWatchers membership and Sequence subscription. And Sequence memberships aren’t covered by insurance (but they will work with your insurance company to pay for medications). Additionally, WeightWatchers will offer new eating and exercise advice tailored for people taking these drugs.

Sadly,  celebrities, tech moguls, and TikTok influencers, who do not have diabetes, have used the drug to lose weight in short time frames. People like Andy Cohen, Elon Musk, and the Kardashians and their followers’ usage has led to people with diabetes not being able to get their prescriptions. The side effects of Ozempic and similar weight loss drugs include gastrointestinal issues, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. It may also cause thyroid tumors, thyroid cancer, pancreatitis, kidney failure, gallbladder problems, vision changes, hypoglycemia, and allergic reactions.

Many people post about their experience with drugs, like Ozempic, on social media. They’ve admitted that their appetite and cravings went through the roof after they stopped using it. It’s been tough for them to maintain their results.

The diet industry is a 50 billion per year industry. With more money than ever going into solutions for weight loss … you’d think we’d be moving in the right direction.

But we’re not. According to the CDC, approximately 42% of Americans are classified as having obesity.
