Chaka Khan: Woman Like Me (Living With Diabetes)

The Queen of Funk, Chaka Khan, was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure in 2011.

Experts say over time, diabetes damages the small blood vessels in your body, causing the walls of the blood vessels to stiffen. This increases pressure, which leads to high blood pressure.

Chaka Khan decided to give up on meat and dairy after her diagnosis.

“I went on a radical change in lifestyle,” she says. “I was on liquids for a year, and that gave me a good jump-start.”

Her new meal plan helped her drop 60 pounds and stop using her oral medications to manage her diabetes.

Last year marked Chaka Khan’s fiftieth year in the music industry. “I ran away from home and quit school. I knew what I wanted to do,” she told Jennifer Hudson on Jennifer Hudson’s talk show.

A lot of people know about Chaka Khan’s life of excess. Many speculate that her strange behavior on Versuz with Stephanie Mills was caused by substance abuse.  However, the star vehemently denies the allegations even though the superstar almost died mixing sleeping pills and cocaine once and suffered from alcohol addiction, which she eventually recovered.

Drinking too much alcohol can raise blood pressure. Having more than three drinks in one sitting temporarily raises blood pressure. Repeated binge drinking can lead to long-term increases in blood pressure.

Her latest song, Woman Like Me, hints at an earlier classic, I’m Every Woman, which she made famous but with a sharper edge. It’s her first single on Sono Recording Group  SRG-ILS Group. It was produced by Gregg Pagani, who also co-wrote it with Francesca Richard and Jeffrey Anderson.

“My song, Woman Like Me, addresses the women of today. And a lot of the tribulations women are going through,” she told Jennifer Hudson. “Much of it is based on insecurities and looking outside yourself for gold when you are the gold.”

Chaka Khan’s I’m Every Woman was her debut solo single from her first album, Chaka (1978). It was Khan’s first hit outside her recordings with the funk band Rufus. “I’m Every Woman” was produced by Arif Mardin and written by the successful songwriting team Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson.

Celine Dion’s Health Crisis

Celine Dion said she’s been diagnosed with a neurological disorder called stiff person syndrome. But like a fabulous diva, she has surrounded herself with an entourage of care.

“I have a great team of doctors working alongside me to help me get better,” Dion said. “I’m working with my sports medicine therapist every day to build back my strength and my ability to perform again.”
We urge you to think like Celine Dion about your diabetes wellness. Don’t go it alone. Create your own entourage of healthcare collaborators, friends, and family members to help you manage your self-care and live your best life.

Stiff Person Syndrome, or SPS, is a disease that causes “progressive muscle stiffness and painful spasms” triggered by environmental factors such as “sudden movement, cold temperature, or unexpected loud noises,” according to Johns Hopkins, reports USA Today.

The disease is considered to be rare and only affects approximately one in a million people.

In an emotional testimony, Celine shared how her health has been affected by the disease.

“The spasms affect every aspect of my daily life, sometimes causing difficulties when I walk and not allowing me to use my vocal cords to sing the way I’m used to,” Celine Dion said. “I have to admit it’s been a struggle. All I know is singing; it’s what I’ve done all my life.”

We’re talking about matters of the heart related to diabetes with music from Celine Dion.

Heart disease is common in people with diabetes. The National Heart Association reports 65% of people with diabetes will die from heart disease or stroke. In general, heart disease death and stroke risk are more than twice as high in people with diabetes. However, managing your risk factors may prevent or delay the development of heart and blood vessel disease.

Divabetic’s Diabetes Late Nite podcast guests include Janis Roszler, PhD, RD, LD/N, CDE, FAND, Mila Clarke Buckley, The Hangry Woman, and Bella Krueger.

Throughout the podcast, we will feature music from Celine Dion’s Falling Into You album, courtesy of SONY Music.  We are proud to participate in Diabetes Podcast Week and support the Spare a Rose campaign to raise funds for Life For a Child.

New Singing Sensation: Samara Joy

Last night, 24-year-old jazz singer Samara Joy wowed the crowd at the Blue Note in New York with a voice as smooth as velvet. Her album, Linger Awhile, is out now.

After winning the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, Samara Joy’s star seems to rise with each performance.

“I was suddenly on the jazz radar. It’s still bizarre to think of how fast things have progressed.”

Her rich and velvety yet precociously refined voice has already earned fans like Anita Baker and Regina King, appearances on the TODAY Show, and millions of likes on TikTok — cementing her status as perhaps the first Gen Z jazz singing star. On Linger Awhile, Samara will introduce that massive audience to a slew of classic standards several times older than she is through her timeless, irresistible sound.

Samara Joy’s gentle rendition of Guess Who I Saw Today, originally popularized by Nancy Wilson, showcases the young singer’s exceptional control, range, and refined, distinctive style.

Her album’s release is just one more step for the ascendant vocalist, who will spend the rest of the year touring increasingly large stages — still shocked to be performing in front of thousands who hang on every word. “I’m still very much a student, even though I’ve graduated,” Samara says. “So this is only the beginning… there is much, much more to come.”

One can only hope that one day Samara Joy will record one of my songs like the new Holiday classic, Pink Champagne, by Ivan Hampden Jr. and Paulette McWilliams.

Nancy Wilson Inspires New Holiday Song: Pink Champage

I’m thrilled to share my new holiday song, “Pink Champagne,” by Ivan Hampden Jr. and Paulette McWilliams, with you.
Pink Champagne’s lyrics came to me from binge-watching Hallmark Holiday movies. After watching three or more of these films (!) I longed to see more about the breakup that led to the main character returning to her hometown and finding her soul mate. This is why Pink Champagne’s main character is a woman ending her relationship at Christmastime on her terms.
Paulette’s voice has so many rich, sophisticated and varied textures and tones; I knew she had more than enough talent to capture the character’s essence.  She created the song’s melody and phrasing, filling my words with raw emotion.
Ivan’s incredible musicianship took over from there. He polished the track, adding a lush, elegant orchestration worthy of our former friend, colleague, and employer Luther Vandross.

“When I received the story from Max, I quickly thought of the connection “Pink Champagne” has to Nancy Wilsons “Guess Who I Saw Today, ” says Ivan Hampden Jr. He adds, “The classy breakup song and one of her biggest hits. It also brought back memories of being on the stage performing with Eartha Kitt, an amazing storyteller, through her songs, particularly her rendition of “All By Myself.”

Feeling ‘blue’ while the rest of the world is acting ‘merry’ isn’t ideal for anyone. Especially if the proverb, “misery loves company,” rings true. I hope anyone with a broken heart finds some comfort in our song, “Pink Champagne.”
Cheers!

Central Park Ghosts: The Van der Voort Sisters

I’m excited to share a sneak peek of my upcoming multi-media Halloween display. The theme of Halloween Street, where I work, is ‘Ghost Live”. Since we’re so close to Central Park, I researched ghosts in Central Park and found out about these two Victorian Sisters, Janet and Rosetta Van der Voort, who haunt the Wollman ice rink. I was so inspired by their story that I decided to produce a short story about them and recruited a few talented friends to help.

Janet and Rosetta Van der Voort, born in the 1800s, were two wealthy sisters whose father rarely let them leave the house unaccompanied. The one place they were allowed to visit was Central Park’s Wollman Rink, where they went ice skating in the winter. The two sisters never married, were lifelong best friends, and died a few months apart. Since their death, their ghostly spirits have been seen periodically skating together on the Central Park Pond, wearing the same red and purple outfits they wore over 100 years ago.

Divabetic pays tribute to the sisters’ spirits, hoping to encourage you to indulge in the creativity associated with Halloween instead of candy.

Halloween’s record-breaking sugar consumption and its detrimental effects on overall health are scarier than any ghost story. It’s been reported that consumers gobbled up a record $36.9 billion in candy, gum, mints, chocolate, and other confections in 2021.

High intakes of dietary sugars in the setting of a worldwide pandemic of obesity and cardiovascular disease have heightened concerns about the adverse effects of excessive consumption of sugars.

High intakes of dietary sugars in the setting of a worldwide pandemic of obesity and cardiovascular disease have heightened concerns about the adverse effects of excessive consumption of sugars.

The American Heart Association suggests limiting adding sugars to no more than 100 calories per day (about 6 teaspoons or 24 grams) for most adult women and no more than 150 calories per day (about 9 teaspoons or 36 grams of sugar) for most men.

Divabetic Mysteries Podcast: Tomorrow Is Not On The Menu

Divabetic’s 9th Annual Mystery podcast: Tomorrow Is Not On The Menu, is available on demand.  Enjoy loads of diabetes information and self-care tips wrapped up in a cozy mystery radio drama.

This year’s cozy diabetes mystery finds the happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic, landing his to-die-for job as a caterer for the nation’s hottest health guru, Wendy Wattage. She’s well-known for helping people get their “energy up and their weight down” by becoming aware of the amount of added sugar in their diets.

The American Heart Association recommends limiting added sugars to no more than 6 percent of calories each day. For most American women, that’s no more than 100 calories per day or about 6 teaspoons of sugar. For men, it’s 150 calories per day or about 9 teaspoons.

Many people consume more sugar than they realize. Knowing how much sugar you consume is important because our bodies don’t need sugar to function properly. Added sugars contribute zero nutrients, but enough added calories can reduce heart health.

Everything at Wendy Wattage’s Wellness Retreat seems hunky-dory until the body of the nasty food critic, Marilyn Macaroni, is found stabbed to death with one of Max’s chef knives. Mr. Divabetic quickly becomes the prime suspect in a big, fat murder investigation!

Can he and his team of friends, diabetes educators, and his nosey Italian mother, Mama Rose Marie, find the killer before the police arrive? Or will he be trading his fruit suit for coveralls with horizontal stripes?

Weight loss murder never tasted so good.

Mr. Divabetic Goes To The White House

Last Friday, September 30, 2022, I went to the White House in Washington, DC. to attend the first-ever White House High Holidays reception.! My role was to support and manage the logistics for violinist Itzhak Perlman‘s breathtaking performance.

It was a quick trip but worth it.

Friday morning, Mr. and Mrs. Perlman and I arrived at the White House at 11 AM. As we walked between the first two security gates, we saw POTUS leave the White House campus in a motorcade.  There were at least 10 black SUV’s in the motorcade. I was told by our escort that POTUS rode n the second one.
President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, and Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff, referred to as the “four principles,” were on their way to see  Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson formally sworn in.
Members of the Supreme Court with the President (L-R) Associate Justices Amy Coney Barrett, Neil M. Gorsuch, Sonia Sotomayor, and Clarence Thomas, Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr., President Joseph R. Biden, Jr., First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff, Associate Justices Ketanji Brown Jackson, Patrick G. Jackson, Samuel A. Alito, Jr., Elena Kagan, and Brett M. Kavanaugh pose at a courtesy visit in the Justices Conference Room before the investiture ceremony of Associate Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.
It’s interesting to note Justice Sonia Sotomayor was diagnosed with T1D at only 7 years old.  Since putting on the black judicial robe, she’s been working to raise diabetes awareness —intentionally and as a byproduct of being on the bench.
After the ceremony, the four principals returned to the White House for a quick photo op with Mr. and Mrs. Perlman before the first-ever White House High Holidays reception began. Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff – the first Jewish spouse of an American president or vice president in U.S. history – delivered remarks after the First Lady and then the President.

At the end of the speeches, our Administration wished everyone, including the 250 VIP’s from the Jewish Community, a happy and healthy new year.
Since Mr. Perlman was a surprise guest, he did not go into the Gold Room where the speeches were given. Mr. and Mrs. Perlman and I watched it on screen in the Green Room.

Backstage, I witnessed the First Lady pat the Second Gentleman on the back after he gave his speech and hugged him. The President reached for the VP’s hand and grasped it. She smiled at him.

Itzhak Perlman gave a short speech before his performance n the main foyer about the piece he was performing.  He explained to the crowd that it had been performed in many styles, but he would perform it the way he heard it as a child in Israel. He performed “Avinu Malkeinu,” a well-known High Holy Day prayer begging God, “our father, our king,” for the forgiveness of sin, to thunderous applause. He played the piece on his 1714 Soil Stradivarius, known as the “Mona Lisa” of musical instruments, crafted by Antonio Stradivari at the peak of his golden period.  Enjoy a snippet of Itzhak Perlman’s in the video below:

Immediately following Itzhak Perlman’s performance was a reception. We chose not to stay, but my eyes feasted on the spectacular abundance of food on the table.
I  was amazed to see how much the four principles accomplish in one day. Their teams (each with an entourage) were courteous, helpful, friendly, and professional.

It was an unforgettable experience! And a great way to celebrate the success of Divabetic’s 9th Annual Mystery podcast, Tomorrow Is Not On the Menu, available on demand.
