Is it OK for People With Diabetes To Soak Their Feet?

Earlier this week I posted our monthly INSTANT WINNER Question (see above) on Divabetic’s various social media outlets including Facebook. Since the responses were split straight down the middle with 50% ‘yes’ and 50% ‘no’ I asked Podiatrist, Health Coach Dr. Michele Summers Colon known the ‘Holistic Podiatrist of Southern California’ to provide the answer.

Dr. Michele says the answer is ‘YES’ but only if people with diabetes follow these guidelines:

1. Don’t use HOT water. Lukewarm water is best
2. Don’t soak your feet if your feet have any open cuts, wounds and/or blisters
3. You must be able to dry between your toes thoroughly afterwards to prevent fungus
4. Not at a nail salon (you never know how clean a salon is!) Soak your feet only in your home, using your own buckets. As a matter of fact, people with diabetes should not get pedicures at a nail salon.
5.Not with anything harsh added to the water (no alcohol, no hydrogen peroxide, no bleach).
6. Acceptable things to add to the water are white vinegar (NOT apple cider vinegar), soap, table salt, Epsom salt, Betadine, bubble bath and foot soaks sold at the drugstore are okay.
7. Mixture of water to anything should be 10:1 ( 10 cups of water, 1 cup of water you add from the list above.)
All the correct answers to our INSTANT WINNER Question will be entered into an random drawing to win September’s PRIZE GIVEAWAY featuring Dr. Greenfield’s Creams, Nu Naturals Gift Basket & more!
